The Bears finished third in the tournament after falling toeventual champion Florida Atlantic, 5-4.For his efforts, Foti was named 2003 A-Sun “Coach of the Year.”While some coaches may take pride in winning coaching awards,Foti chooses to take a different approach."The award should be 'Staff of the Year' and not 'Coach of the Year',"Foti said. "I was very fortunate to have such a quality staff in Debbie(Sonnenberg) and Sarah (Madden). They made my job so mucheasier and they deserve to be recognized for the jobs they did."From 1987-1991, he served as the Manitoba Provincial Softball Teamcoach. He also helped guide a women's open team to four consecutiveCanadian National Championships from 1993-1996.For his efforts as coach of those national championship teams, Fotiwas inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in October of2004.Tony and his wife Mindy have two children; daughter Devyn (15) andson Dayne (12).Though Mercer is Foti's first Division I head coaching job, he hasbeen involved with softball in some capacity for the past 24 years.Prior to arriving at Mercer, he served as an assistant coach at theUniversity of California-Santa Barbara from 1995-2001.Throughout his career, Foti's coaching has not been confined strictlyto the United States. Softball has also taken him all over the world.GamesKen Phillips. . . . . . . . . . . . . 506Tony Foti . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 178Vicki Van Kleeck . . . . . . . . . 141Ed Nixon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 101Foti’s Year-by-Year Results2002 Mercer 21-35 .375*2003 Mercer 35-23 .603*2004 Mercer 34-30 .531Postseason: 3-4* - Qualified for A-Sun tourneyMercer Coaches by the NumbersWinsKen Phillips. . . . . . . . . . . . . 152Tony Foti . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 90Vicki Van Kleeck . . . . . . . . . . 59Ed Nixon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 32LossesKen Phillips. . . . . . . . . . . . . 354Tony Foti . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 88Vicki Van Kleeck . . . . . . . . . . 81Ed Nixon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69Winning PercentageTony Foti . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .506Vicki Van Kleeck . . . . . . . . .422Ed Nixon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .317Ken Phillips . . . . . . . . . . . . .300S e c t i o n T i t l eMercer Softball 2005

In honor of her achievements as a player, Sonnenbergwas inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in October of2004.Sonnenberg's primary responsibilities are working with the pitchersand catchers. Before arriving at Mercer, Sonnenberg spent four seasons as anassistant coach at Kennesaw State. She guided that pitching staff to four consecutive appearances inthe NCAA Division II National Tournament, including a NationalChampionship in 1998.Prior to Kennesaw, she was an assistant for the first three yearsin the history of the Auburn softball program. Her other coaching stints include Delta State in Mississippi andBurnside High School in New Zealand.Sonnenberg had a stellar playing career. "She hassuch compassion for our players and her pitching expertise isunmatched. Her past softball experiences bring such credibilityto our program."Mercer Softball 2005

2005 PreviewMany programs would be satisfied with theaccomplishments of the 2004 Mercer softballteam. Mercer finished their conferenceschedule with a 12-8 mark and qualified forthe conference tournament for the secondconsecutive season and for only the seventhtime in school history. While head coach Tony Foti is pleased withwhat his teams have been able to accomplishin his short time at Mercer, he is farfrom satisfied."Every year your primary goal has got to beto improve on previous years," said Foti."This year we have some new and differentchallenges and we want to meet those challengeshead-on and strive to reach new levelsof success."In order for the 2005 season to be a successfor the Mercer program, the squad will haveto blend veteran leadership with young andinexperienced talent.Of the 16 girls on the 2005 roster, 11 areunderclassmen. However, Foti does notlook at his youth as a hindrance, but astrength of this year's team."I am very excited to get this season startedbecause I truly believe that this is the bestteam that we've had here at Mercer," Fotisaid. "With this last recruiting class, wehave improved our speed, power and depthat nearly every position. And since we havesuch a young, talented group of playersreturning from last year's team, we have theluxury of allowing these freshmen asmoother transition into college ball ratherthan just throwing them into the line of fire."Since Foti has been the head man atMercer, he has stepped up the level of nonconferencecompetition considerably. Thattradition will be continued in 2005. TheBears will play at least 20 games againstschools that advanced to their regional tournamentsin 2004 or are traditionally knownfor being collegiate softball powers.Mercer's non-conference slate will pit themagainst the likes of Florida International,Tennessee, Illinois-Chicago, Southern Miss,Purdue, Georgia Tech, Winthrop andGeorgia. On top of that, the Bears play in the AtlanticSun, one of the premier conferences in all ofcollege softball with a number of successfulprograms such as Florida Atlantic, UCF,Stetson and Troy."This is going to be the toughest schedulethat a Mercer team has ever played," saidFoti. "I've always believed that the only wayto get better is to play the best competition. That's what we are going to do this year."InfieldThe leader of the 2005 infield unit is withoutquestion two-time all-conference performerMeghan Clark. Clark found out in June thata new NCAA rule would allow her a fifth yearof eligibility because of a misdiagnosedinjury during her freshman year at FloridaCommunity College. Foti knows how muchof an asset Clark will be to this young teamand how much better his offense will be withher in the clean-up spot."Meghan is the anchor of our lineup andgives us that big power threat that we need,"Foti said. "She is very disciplined in herapproach to the game, and her skill changesthe way that teams approach facing not onlyher, but our entire lineup."If Clark is asked to be the designated player, then Foti will look to Jamie Madruga to fill inat first base. Madruga has impressed thecoaches during fall practice and will see thefield regularly once the season starts. At second base, freshman Gigi Eykamp willbe the starter to open the season."Gigi is a very athletic player that will giveour offense and defense an added dimension,"said Foti. "She has tremendous quicknessand her ability to bunt and steal will bean asset to this team."When called upon, C.J. Martin will also seetime at second base for the Bears.Entering the 2004 season, the shortstopposition was an area of concern for Foti, butthat certainly is not the case this year.Returning is A-Sun All-Freshman team memberKelley Bretscher who played everyinning of the 2004 season at shortstop forMercer."Kelley is the heart and soul of this year'steam," Foti said. "In my opinion, she is thebest shortstop in the Atlantic Sun."Third base duties will be handled by anothernew face, freshman Ashley Anderson.Anderson has impressed coaches with hermaturity and ability to handle the transitionfrom high school to college ball."Ashley is another player that has great athleticism,"said Foti. "She has a strong armand good speed that will help our lineup."Junior Amanda Cosson will see playing timeat third base, as well as at first and second.Foti has a pair of sophomores that will handlecatching duties for the Bears in 2005. A-Sun All-Freshman team member KristinTalamantes returns as well as C.J. Martin."Kristin and C.J. are both very good playersthat help this team in different ways," Fotisaid. "Kristin has emerged as a team leaderand handles all of our pitchers very well.C.J. had a solid freshman year and reallycame on strong at the end of 2004. She hascome back this year stronger and we arelooking for big things from her."OutfieldThe outfield will be captained by all-conferenceperformer Kerri Ryskamp. Ryskampenters 2005 as the starter in left field after a"dream season" in 2004."Kerri is a big-time Division I college player,"said Foti. "She has the ability to hit the ballhard, but she also hits for average. She's acomplete player that's one of the best in theconference."Also expected to see time in left field thisseason is freshman Crystal Condra. Condrais a speedy player that plays great defenseand is working on improving her offensivegame.Sophomore Tiffany Abbott will be the Bears'starter in center field after making the movefrom right field in the off-season. Foti hasbeen impressed by Abbott's approach to thegame following her freshman campaign.5#S e c t i o n T i t l eMercer Softball 2005

6"Tiffany came back this year with a renewedmotivation," said Foti. "She is in great shapeand her speed and left handed bat will be avaluable asset to this team."Earning the starting job in right field will bejunior college transfer Sarah Harding. Hardingwas recognized as an all-region performer atMidland Junior College."If you look at what Sarah has been able toaccomplish at one of the best junior collegesin the country, it's pretty impressive," said theMercer coach. "She has great power numbersand plays sound, fundamental defense. Sheis an impact player that we expect to do bigthings in a Mercer uniform."The remainder of the rotation will be made upof newcomers. Junior college transfer JennyHolland and freshman Meredith Weare will seetime in the circle on a regular basis for theBears.Holland, a sophomore from Bethlehem, Ga., isa hard thrower that is far from being just apower pitcher."Jenny can dominate hitters with her powerbut she also has great movement on her pitchesand throws off-speed as well," Foti said. "Ithink her having a year of junior college experiencewill really help her at this level."W eare will round out the pitching staff andgive Mercer another option to throw at theiropponents."Meredith is a hard thrower that can throw inthe mid-60s," said Foti. "She will be a greatpitcher for us."OutlookWhen talking with coach Foti about his 2005squad, he is confident that this can be the bestteam that he has coached since he has beenat Mercer.S e c t i o n T i t l ePitchingThe pitching staff was undeniably the strengthof the 2004 squad. As good as the hurlerswere a season ago, Foti believes that thisyear’s unit will be even better.Returning is ace pitcher Katie Rosentreter.Rosentreter finished 2004 second in the A-Sunin ERA (1.19), third in strikeouts (215) andthird in wins (21). Her K/BB ratio of 8.6 ledthe conference. Rosentreter’s exploits led to alist of postseason accolades. She was selectedas a first team all-conference performer, named to the A-Sun all-tournament team, selected A-Sun Pitcher of the Week on threeoccasions and was invited to play for Tea mCanada in the World University SoftballChampionship."This is a very exciting group of girls that havethe potential to do great things," said thecoach. "We've had talented individual playershere in the past, but this is the best collectivegroup that I've ever coached. We are faster, more powerful, better defensively and havemore depth than in any other year that I'vebeen here."2005 Preseason A-Sun Poll1. Florida Atlantic2. UCF3. Stetson4.
