MERCER LEGENDS702005-06 MERCERMA list of legendary players at <strong>Mercer</strong> has tobegin with Andrea Congreaves.Congreaves re-wrote the <strong>Mercer</strong> record bookduring his dazzling four year career. She was athree time A-Sun Player of the Year, and a memberof the Kodak All-America team in 1993. Sheis the all-time leader in points, field goals, fieldgoal percentage, and blocks. She is second infree throws made, second in three pointersmade and attempted, third all time in reboundsand rebounding average.She led the Bears to back-to-back conferencechampionships in 1990-1991 and 1991-1992. She led the nation in scoring in 1991-92(33.0) and the 1992-93 (31.0).Congreaves’ incredible season also includeda field goal percentage of .633, 11.6 reboundsper game and 77 3-pt field goals made on 185attempts for a .416 percentage. Simply put, oneon the most remarkable seasons ever puttogether by a <strong>Mercer</strong> Bear.Vivian Humphrey is <strong>Mercer</strong>'s second all-timeleading scorer with 2,284 points during hercareer between 1977 and 1981. She held thetop spot on the scoring list until Congreavesclaimed the throne during her career from 1989-1993.Humphrey ranks second all time in fieldgoals made (925), and is first in field goalsattempted (2,125) as well as free throws made,edging out Congreaves with a career total of434.Humphrey led the Bears during one of themost successful periods in the programs history.During the 1978-79 season, the Bears won22 games with just 10 losses under coach JaneFontaine and went on to win the GAIWA StateVivian HumphreyERCER WOMEN’S BASKETBALLENTHUSIASM, , EMOTIONEMOTION, , EFFORTEFFORTAndrea CongreavesChampionship, the first title of any kind in theprogram’s history.After that season of success, the Bearscame back strong to defend their title. The teamposted a program-high 29 wins during the 1979-80 campaign. The Bears defeated Florida,Southern Mississippi, Auburn, Georgia Tech,and Florida State to name a few of their 29 wins.The Bears continued through the GAIAW StateTournament, and into the Region III tournament.The Bears went on to host Texas in theAIAW National Tournament. The 81-80 lossended <strong>Mercer</strong>'s season, but not before they hadanother title to hang, and a 12-game win streakbefore the loss to Texas.That season also marked the beginning ofanother <strong>Mercer</strong> legend, Emma Mumphrey. Shewould finish her career as the third member ofthe 2,000-point club with 2,098. Mumphrey is


WHERE WE GO ONE, Wsecond in field goal percentage, finishing hercareer 859 made on 1,524 attempts, a .564 clip,a mark that stood until the 1993 season and theend of Congreaves’ <strong>Mercer</strong> career.Vivian Humphrey and Emma Mumphreymade a powerful combination, but they were notthe first “Dynamic Duo” to wear the Orange andBlack.From 1971 to 1975, Myrel Huskey and SybilBlalock formed a scoring force that helped<strong>Mercer</strong> to the most dominant four year run in theprogram’s history.Huskey (1,867) and Blalock (1,856) rankfourth and fifth respectively on the scoring list,, WE GO ALLSybil Blalockand were the first players to record 1,000 pointsin their career. Under head coach Peggy Collins,the Bears went 87-13.Myrel Huskey held the top spot on <strong>Mercer</strong>'sall-time scoring list for less than a decade, whenVivian Humphrey surpassed her career total, buther name still remains near the top in everymajor offensive category.Sybil Blalock's <strong>Mercer</strong> career isn't quite over.Her playing days are over, and her accoladesare still remembered throughout the <strong>Mercer</strong>record books. She was honored as a member ofMyrel Huskeythe WNIT All-America Team in 1975, and her21.9 points per game in 1972-73 is the eighthhighest single-season average in <strong>Mercer</strong> history.Blalock remains a part of the <strong>Mercer</strong> family,she is a professor in the math department and isthe associate athletic director and senior womanadministrator.Cindy Brogdon played only two seasons for<strong>Mercer</strong>, but she made an impact in her timehere. She averaged 30.1 points per game foreach season, the third highest total in schoolhistory.Brogdon finished with 1,746 points, placingher sixth on the scoring list. But her two individualseasons of 902 points in 1975-76 and 844points in 1976-77 stood as the best single seasonsuntil Andrea Congreaves remarkable 1991-92 season.After her <strong>Mercer</strong> career she played for the1976 United States Olympic women's basketballteam in Montreal, Canada. CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION2005-06 MERCERMERCER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL<strong>Mercer</strong> women's basketballbegan play in 1970 and it didn’ttake long for this program to besuccessful. In just its second yearof existence, the Bears finishedwith a 21-1 record in 1971-72, butsince they were not a member of aconference, there was no championshipto be had.The Bears went on a run of sixstraightwinning seasons under theirfirst head coach Peggy Collins, whois <strong>Mercer</strong>'s all-time winningest coachwith 133 wins and has an .801 winningpercentage. After a one seasonstumble in 1977-78 under new coach Jane Fontaine,but the Bears rebounded quickly winning 51 games inthe next two seasons under Fontaine.In 1978-79, under the direction of Fontaine, theBears won their first title as a program, taking homethe GAIAW State Championship. That team was ledby one of the legends of <strong>Mercer</strong> women's basketball,Vivian Humphrey. Humphrey is the second leadingscorer in <strong>Mercer</strong> history,and is one ofthree members of theexclusive 2,000-pointclub. CharlotteNicholson was finishingup her brilliantcareer with 1,256points, 11th currentlyin the <strong>Mercer</strong> recordbooks. KathySingletary, eighth on<strong>Mercer</strong>'s all time scoringlist, was in her firstyear with the Bears.<strong>Mercer</strong> went 22-10 that season, notching victoriesover Georgia, Georgia Southern, Florida State,Florida, Ole Miss, and Auburn. The Bears defeatedValdosta State for the GAIWA state title, but would loseto them in the third round of the Region III Tournament.The Bears kept right on rolling in 1979-80,improving to a single-season school record 29 winsto only six losses. Humphrey returned to lead theBears along with Singleton. That season saw theemergence of another future legend of <strong>Mercer</strong>,Emma Mumphrey. Mumphrey would finish hercareer with 2,098 points, which places her third alltime behind Humphrey and Andrea Congreaves.This <strong>Mercer</strong> team came out of the bocks on fire,1980 GAIAW Championsripping off seven wins in a row over teams likeFlorida, Troy State and Southern Mississippi. TheBears had a one game stumble at MississippiCollege, then three more wins over Auburn, Stetson,and Pittsburgh.The Bears suffered back to back losses onlyonce the entire season, against Clemson and OleMiss. They then went on a tear to end the seasonand went into the GAIAW State Tournament havingwon 12 in a row, the third longest win streak in theprograms history. Their tournament run consisted ofwins over Valdosta State and Georgia Southern towin the GAIAW State Title, before moving on to theRegion III tournament in Cleveland, Miss. <strong>Mercer</strong>swept through the Region III tournament with winsover South Alabama, Florida State, and GeorgiaSouthern. This put the Bears at home hosting Texasin the AIAW National Tournament, after a tight game,the Longhorns prevailed81-80 ending<strong>Mercer</strong>'s season, butthe success of the1979-1980 season stillremains.<strong>Mercer</strong> wentthrough some rebuildingafter that magicalseason, but the successreturned to PorterGym for the 1984-85season. The Bearswere led by the seniorleadership of AnitaMeadows. She finishedher career with atotal of 1,088 points, which is 15th all time for theBears. WHERE WE GO ONE, W1985 NCAA Division II Final Four Teammen and eventual 1,000-point club member DawnJackson (1,120, 14th all time). Their 24 wins equaledthe second highest total in school history. They compileda 14-game win streak, a mark that can only betopped by the remarkable 19-0 start for the 1971-72Bears.This team found national success on a level theprogram had never seen before, reaching the NCAATournament and continuing their run of great play. Avictory over North Alabama clinched the NCAASouth Championship, followed by a victory overQuinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., in the NCAAQuarterfinals put the Bears into the NCAA Division IIFinal Four in Springfield, Mass. Central Missourisquared off against the Bears and their 14-consecutivewins and Central Missouri prevailed 82-79.<strong>Mercer</strong>'s most decorated player brought homethe next two championship banners for the Bears.Andrea Congreavespatrolled the hardwoodof Porter Gym from1989-1993, and filledup the hoops of thatvenerable arena with2,796 points, made1,107 field goalsincluding 153 3-pointers,made 429 freethrows, and grabbed1,141 rebounds off thePorter glass.She was supportedby Stephany Rainesduring the two championshipseasons; Raines is by no surprise, the alltimeleader in assists with 851.<strong>Mercer</strong> opened its 1990-91 season against, WE GO ALLperennial women's basketball powerhouseOld Dominion, on theroad, under the guidance of firstyearhead coach Lea Henry. TheBears went into ODU and walkedout victorious and carried thatmomentum to a 4-0 start.After the fast start, the Bearslost two in a row for the only timeduring their title run. The Bearswould finish 1990-91 with an 18-9overall record, and a 10-2 conferencerecord. Andrea Congreavesled the nation in scoring averagethat season, with 33 points per contest.The Bears lost to Florida A&M in the conferencetournament, ending their season, but not before thefirst A-Sun banner in program history adorned therafters of Porter Gym.The 1991-92 Bears started very slowly by droppingthe first twogames to TennesseeState and SouthFlorida. After drawingback to .500 with backto-backwins overMarist and UCF, theBears fell to 2-4 aftertwo straight games toGeorgia and Collegeof Charleston.Then thingsstarted clicking. TheBears ran off ninestraight victories, a lossto SoutheasternLouisiana slowed the roll, but it didn't stop it. <strong>Mercer</strong>ripped off eight more wins, then traded consecutivelosses to Florida International and Florida Atlantic withconsecutive wins over Georgia State and Florida A&M.<strong>Mercer</strong> clinched a share of the regular seasontitle yet again, this time sharing with FloridaInternational as both finished 10-2 in the A-Sun. TheBears finished 20-8 that season, AndreaCongreaves led the NCAA in scoring once again,averaging 31.0 points.She won her second A-Sun Player of the Yearaward, and set the stage for her selection to theKodak All-America team in 1993. ANDREA CONGREAVES74A look through the <strong>Mercer</strong> record book, youcan get a good look at the history of the program.The name most prominently displayed throughoutthe record book is <strong>Mercer</strong>'s all-time scoring leaderAndrea Congreaves.She played for the Bears from 1989-1993 andaveraged 25.9 points per game, the second highesttotal of all time behind Cindy Brogdon's 30.1from 1975-1977.Congreaves (2,796) is one of only three membersin <strong>Mercer</strong>'s 2,000-point club, along withVivian Humphrey (2,284) and Emma Mumphrey(2,098). She is the only player in <strong>Mercer</strong> history tohave made more than 1,000 field goals in hercareer having made 1,107 on 1,910 attempts. Herfield goal percentage of .580 is also the highesttotal in <strong>Mercer</strong> history.Congreaves play was not limited to the offensiveend of the floor, as third all time in rebounds,one of four Bears to record 1,000 rebounds.Emma Mumphrey (1,355) is the all time leader,followed by Linda Callahan (1,228), Congreaves(1,151), and Charlotte Nicholson (1,068).Congreaves is also second on the all-time listin blocks, finishing her <strong>Mercer</strong> tenure with 83.Congreaves led <strong>Mercer</strong> to back-to-backAtlantic Sun Conference regular season titles in1991 and 1992, the only two conference titles inthe programs history.2005-06 MERCERMERCER WOMEN’S BASKETBALLENTHUSIASM, , EMOTIONEMOTION, , EFFORTEFFORTDuring the 1991-92 campaign, she set aschool record by scoring 925 points, making 353field goals on 606 attempts, a percentage of.593,fifth highest in <strong>Mercer</strong> history. She led to Bears toconference championship glory in 1991 and 1992.When all is said and done, Andrea Congreavescould be one of the greatest athletes ever to wearthe <strong>Mercer</strong> uniform.After <strong>Mercer</strong>, Congreaves played four seasonsin the WNBA, two with the Charlotte Sting and twowith the Orlando Miracle.
