MARDEN’S CLUB
SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2012
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The AGM, followed by drinks and canapés, will be held on THURSDAY 13th SEPTEMBER at Bumpkin
Restaurant (South Kensington), 102 Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3RD. Marden’s Club AGM is an
opportunity for a reunion and a party and it is hoped as many members as possible will be able to come.
In order to provide adequate catering and refreshments, we do need to know numbers so please reply to the
Hon. Sec. Joanna Sanders as soon as possible. It is expected that a few members will be staying on for dinner
at Bumpkins (at member’s own cost) and if you would like to reserve a table please book directly with the
restaurant (Tel: 020 7341 0802). We need to ensure all the cups are returned and if you are in possession of a cup
and unable to come please inform Joanna well in advance about alternative arrangements. Also do not forget to
get your cup engraved before the AGM!
IMPORTANT CLUB NEWS
The President and Committee will put forward a proposal at the AGM to move the Marden’s Cups to Klosters in
the autumn. They would be presented to the trophy winners at the prize giving after the race. However, they
would not be kept by the race winners but would be returned to the Club for engraving and safe keeping. Each
trophy winner would receive a small cup with the name of the trophy they won, and the year, engraved on it as a
memento to keep always. The cups would be kept in a safe at the bank but would be on display in appropriate
locations such as Maissens during the Marden’s weeks at Christmas/New Year and Easter.
Last winter, due to adverse weather conditions there were no cups awarded for the Marden’s Club
Championships in December or the Family Race on 1st January thus making this an ideal year to move the cups
and therefore there will be no prize giving at the AGM.
Should the Marden’s Cups be moved to Klosters then we have decided to change the date of the Family Race to
Sunday 30th December with the prize giving and presentation of the appropriate cups awarded to the winners of
the Club Championships and the Family Race in the evening. We have also added on two extra days of Race
Training after Christmas but is subject to demand and further details and a registration form will be posted on
the Marden’s website in due course but if we had all the email addresses of club members then the information
could simply be circulated with ease!
Davos Klosters Mountains are kindly offering a discounted ski pass to Marden's Club members at Christmas /
New Year and again at Easter. This will be valid only for individuals and families who participate in the pre-
Christmas training/after Christmas training, Marden's Club Championships on Pischa or the Family Race and at
Easter with the Junior & Mini training or those who race in the Spring Championships. Further information will
be in The Review.
Congratulations to our ex-president Richard Berglas for winning The British Masters race in Megève in
February – next year it is hoped more members will participate.
JUNIOR & MINI TRAINING
The training in the Easter holidays was as popular as ever and 64 children took part in the Junior training with
an active programme of race training, jumps and free skiing and a further 11 children formed two groups in the
Mini training. The weather was a mixture of sunshine, snow and fog making the planning somewhat tricky
although the enthusiasm was not to be dampened! Record snowfall throughout the winter ensured the pistes
were still in excellent condition and it was possible to ski down to Klosters at the end of the day until the end of
the season. The trainees enjoyed some good training sessions with the now traditional parallel slalom in the
middle of the week being as competitive as ever. Newly added to the programme was a team synchronised
skiing competition.
There is an excellent video from the training week available and if you would like to order a copy please contact
Clair Southwell by email: clair@clairsouthwell.com. The dates for 2013 will be Monday 1st – Friday 5th
April with the welcome cocktail party and registration on Easter Sunday 31st March. Registration for both the
Junior and Mini Training will be open from the beginning of September and please use the online booking form
which you will find on the Marden’s website.
MARDEN’S CLUB RACE PLANS 2013
James Palmer-Tomkinson took on the role of Race Captain last year and below is some information on some
of the planned races for this winter. If you are interested or want further information please contact James on
Tel: 020 7736 7300 or Email: james@ptski.com
Marden’s Juniors v Kandahar Juniors
We are trying to arrange a fixture against the Kandahar over Easter. The idea is to take a team to Murren
probably on Friday 29th March, race on the Saturday and then return to Klosters on Sunday 31st (in time for the
Junior Training Cocktail Party). We will then invite Kandahar to Klosters for a return fixture over Easter 2014.
We are trying to gauge interest and if you think your child would like to take part please contact James as soon
as possible.
Interclub Championships
The Amateur Interclub Championships will take place in Zermatt over the second weekend in March (7th–10th
March). Last winter we took 2 men’s and a ladies team to Gstaad, with the ladies finishing a highly commendable
3rd. It was an extremely enjoyable 4 days and a wonderful opportunity to meet skiers from other clubs. It
would be lovely to have 2 men’s and 2 ladies team representing Marden’s next winter and if you are interested
in taking part please contact James.
The Inferno
We will also be submitting entries for the Inferno in Murren (26th January). We had 3 Marden’s members
compete last year with Dominic Palmer-Tomkinson coming in 43rd overall out of some 1550 racers –a
phenomenal result. All entries for next year should be done through the Club and the application will be
submitted at the beginning of September so please contact James by 14th August if you would like to enter.
THE REVIEW
We are delighted to say that Rosemary Drummond has agreed to take on the role as The Hon. Editor of The
Review and she will be proposed at the AGM in September. Meanwhile though, we need your articles, stories
and photos (weddings / births too) and would be grateful if you could submit any contributions by the beginning
of September (the sooner the better!) by email to: rosemary@drummond.co.uk or clair@clairsouthwell.com.
