InnovativeTechnologyKress Straddle Carriers are a result ofKress Corporation’s extensive expierence inthe design and manufacture of specialpurpose vehicles for steel mills. All modelsare designed and built for continuousservice in severe mill conditions handlingboth red hot and cold products. Each modeluses standardized components and subassembliesbut the overall carrierdimensions and attachments are custombuilt to suit the specific application. Forthis reason, specifications noted here arettypical examples for reference only.Kress Straddle Carriers utilizemechanical powertrains for reliability andefficiency. Four (4) cycle diesel enginesdrive through multi-speed automatictransmissions to planetary wheel hubs via averticle drive shaft system. Majorcomponents are positioned for goodmatenance access.The smaller capacity models are twoaxledesign with four-wheel steering andtwo-wheel drive from a single powertrain.The larger models feature a three-axledesign with four-wheel steer and two-wheeldrive from dual powertrains with fulelectronic synchronization.Steeering is hydraulic with fullelectronic monitoring and adjustment toprovide pure synchronous and proportionalAckerman steering front and rear. Fourwheeledcarriers can also offer optionalcrab steering.All wheels feature full hydraulicsuspension, large E4 earthmover tires ofadequate capacity, and large disc brakes toensure the carriers are capable of providinga very high total performance envelopewith saftey.

The SystemKress Straddle Carriers are designed toform the most modem and cost-effectivesteel mill transportation system. They areideally suited to moving red hot or coldproducts such as slabs, blooms, coils, etc.between plant areas and stockyards.Straddle Carriers are available in avariety of configurations with load capacityranging from 110,000 lbs (50 tonnes) to330,000 lbs (150 tonnes).The layout, and high lift capability, ofKress Straddle Carriers allows them to passover stockyard rows fully laden and with theability to randomly access any location in ahigh density stockyard.Good maneuverability and the ability tooperate on typical heavy vehicle roads givesinfrastructure requirements. Operation withmultiple stockyards with linear orherringbone layouts and complex routings ispossible, giving straddle carrier-basedtransport systems unrivaled flexibility.Straddle Carriers are able to handle largequantities of product very quickly andeffectively. Loading, transporting, andunloading cycles can be performed rapidly.The ability to self load and unload also decouplesthe carrier operation from the plantbeing served (e.g. caster or strip mill) tominimize delays and boost carrier utilization.The combination of high performance andflexibility of Kress Straddle Carriers allowstransport tasks to be rationalized to form the
