PARTNERS WITH HPHP VAR Program #1 in WRBUSINESS1989 Annual Report Card ReviewFor the past four years, value-addedresellers have ranked HP #I in morecategories than any other computer supplierincluded in the VARBUSINESSAnnual Report Card Review. This year, for the first time, HP has also beenranked #1 overall among the 13 majorvendors rated in the survey. Bill Murphy, director of marketing for HP'sNetworked Systems Sector, acceptedthe award from VARBUSINESS whenthis announcement was made in frontof 4,000 HP customers attending theINTEREX (HP user's group) Conferenceon September 13 in San Francisco,California. In this year's review. HP took the blueribbon in 11 out of the 18 categories -the most first places of any vendor. HPhad higher scores than any other vendorin these categories:' Breadth of product lineQuality of products' VAR technical support servicesVAR marketing support services' Satisfaction with marketing supportchangesProvision for hardware maintenanceQuality of information providedWillingness to address VAR problems' Ability to address VAR problems' Commitment to VAR programOverall impression of vendorIn addition, HP received the highestoverall average of any vendor in thesurvey, and scored higher than DECand IBM in every category."HP is the closest [rated vendor]VARBUSINESS has had to a perfect 10,"stated VARBUSINESS news editor,Jenny McCune, during the awardspresentation. "It knows how to listen toresellers and customers and provide theright systems for them. . .It's no wonderthen that the HP resellers. . .havenice things to say about their vendor."Here are some reseller quotes sheshared with the audience:"They halve a 'what do we need todo to make the system work andmake people happy' attitude. ""They've increased their marketvisibility. There's no more'HP who?' ""The feeling qfbeing purr ofa team trickles down from thesenior management to the localrep level."For four years, the VARBUSINESS staffhas been researching and publishingmonthly report cards on the suppliersthat VARs buy from. It interviews morethan 1.200 VARs a year to find out howvendors are doing, asking them to ratetheir vendors in 18 categories. Thesecategories measure a vendor's performancein marketing, support: and productareas. Vendors are rated on a scaleof 1 to 10 for each category, with 1being the lowest score and 10 thehighest. At the end of the year, the magazineputs out a compendium of the monthlyreport results, which it likens to theConsumer Report of VAR programs. The results of the monthly surveys aretallied and vendors are ranked in theAnnual Review based on their previouslypublished mean scores. For eachcategory, the vendor with the highestscore is put in first place."Measured by reseller comments orany other criteria," McCune concluded,"HP has done an outstanding job andthe staff that administers reseller programsdeserves to be congratulated."We certainly agree with her. Thanks toall our HP value-added businesses forhelping to make our program so successful. We are happy our program isworking well for you.Reprints of the VARBUSINESS articlewill be available soon. This extension tothe Starbase Graphics library allowsusers to produce highly realistic imagesusing radiosity or ray tracing. Radiosityand ray tracing are global illuminationalgorithms that produce advancedgraphics effects such as shadowing, reflection, and refraction. The normalStarbase rendering techniques consideronly the positions of model surfaceswith regard to light sources, surfaceproperties, and eye position to produceshaded images. Global techniques, suchas ray tracing and radiosity, also takeinto account relative positions of modelsurfaces to each other, and additionalsurface properties such as reflectivityand transparency. As a result, theseimages exhibit accurate shadows, reflections, refractions, and transmittanceeffects.IStarbase radiosity and ray tracingcontains both radiosity and ray tracingalgorithms because each has particularstrengths and is best suited to particularapplications. Radiosity is uniquelysuited to accurately rendering environmentsthat contain diffuse surfaces, such as painted walls and carpetedfloors, which absorb some light andscatter the remainder evenly back intothe environment. In contrast, the Starbase ray tracer isvery adept at modeling environmentsthat contain specular surfaces such aschrome or glass. The ray tracer providesrealistic lighting effects such asspecular reflection, refraction, andtransmission effects. Its results are viewdependent and cannot be used in conjunctionwith the radiosity results. The Starbase Radiosity and Ray TracingLibraries will be supported on HP 9000Series 300 and Series 800 24-planeTurboSRX workstations that areequipped with Starbase Display Listand HP-UX 6.5 or later (7.0 on Series800). HP 9000HP 9000 Series 300workstations switch toSCSZ .for mass storageHewlett-Packard is making a strategicswitch to SCSI as the preferred massstorage interface for HP 9000 Series300 workstations. HP-IB data throughputwill be inadequate for future diskproducts, therefore, a new interface isrequired to provide continual performanceimprovements for HP's massstorage subsystems.SCSI, the most logical candidate, isan industry standard gaining widespreadacceptance by the workstationindustry. As such, SCSI is the interfaceof choice for the next generation ofremovable mass storage devices (suchas cartridge tape. helical scan technology,CD-ROM, and magneto-opticaldevices). Generally, these devices willbe made available with SCSI support;HP-IB support will follow at a higherprice.Today, SCSI provides industry-leadingperformance. In addition, price differentialsbetween HP-IB and SCSI arealready beginning to appear. Thisdifferential will become more pronouncedwith time. HP is committedto continue to provide a variety ofHP-IB devices for existing users, butoften at a less competitive price point.HP 9000HP BASIC/UX 5.52 extends capabilitiesThe first two revisions ofHP BASICIUX have proven to bevery popular products, and the 5.52release provides features to help extendthis popularity.Like the previous revisions ofHP BASICIUX, this product providesRocky Mountain BASIC on top ofHP 9000 Series 300 HP-UX. The 5.52revision of HP BASICIUX providesRMB capability for the 7.0 revision ofHP-UX and also adds features thatmake HP BASICIUX respond more likeother HP-UX applications. These addedfeatures include standard command lineoptions to allow HP BASICIUX to fitbetter within the X Windows Environmentand the capability to executeHP BASICIUX as a backgroundprocess.HP BASICIUX 5.52 continues to provideLOADISTORE compatibility withother HP BASIC systems includingHP BASICIWS and HP BASICIDOS.This compatibility provides users withthe means to easily develop HP BASICapplications for execution within anumber of environments. Additionally, future revisions of the HP BASICIWSand HP BASICIDOS products are beingdeveloped to further improve thisHP BASIC family compatability.HP-UX 7.0 supportThe 5.52 revision of HP BASICIUXprovides enhancements to allow foroperation within the Series 300 HP-UXrelease 7.0 environment. As with previous revisions ofHP BASICIUX, the HP 9000 Series300 HP-UX Application ExecutionEnvironment (AXE) system is requiredfor minimal operation. The HP 9000Series 300 HP-UX Programming Environment(PE) is required for developmentof HP BASICIUX CompiledSubprograms (CSUBS).Diskless operation has been extended inthe 7.0 release of HP-UX which allowsa Series 800 system to act as a disklessserver for either HP 9000 Series 800or Series 300 clients. This capabilityallows HP BASICIUX to operate onHP 9000 Series 300 diskless nodeswith either a Series 800 or Series 300diskless server. This does not meanthat HP BASICIUX executes on theHP 9000 Series 800. The HP 9000Series 800 server will not recognizeHP BASICIUX as an executableapplication. The 7.0 release of HP-UX does not supportoperation on the Model 310 system, therefore, HP BASICIUX will nolonger be supported on the Model 310.Operation on other HP 9000 Series 300systems is still fully supported byHP-UX as well as HP BASICIUX.Additionally, operation on the Model332 requires the addition of theoptional 68882 math coprocessor.New HP BASICIUX capabilitiesAdditional changes have been made tothe HP BASICIUX product to incorporatesome requested enhancements.documentation changes, and defectfixes. In addition to improving compatibilitywith the HP BASICIWS andHP BASICIDOS platforms, two majorenhancement requests have beensatisfied with the 5.52 release ofHP BASICIUX.A number of enhancement requestswere made to improve HP BASICIUXoperation within the X WindowsEnvironment. All previous revisionsof HP BASICIUX operated in theX Windows Environment, but specifyingtarget display, foreground andbackground colors, window geometry, and other X Windows parameters wascumbersome.HP CHANNELSNovember 1989

The 5.52 release of HP BASICIUX providesstandard X Windows commandline options to allow users to specifyforeground and background colors, alpha buffer size, border width andcolor, cursor mode, font, geometry, title, target display, iconic, and retainedgraphics options. Additionally, the 5.52release provides full support for thestandard MOTIF window manager.Another group of enhancement requestshas been addressed with this release ofHP BASICIUX, as well. The previousreleases of HP BASICIUX did not providethe capability to execute as a backgroundprocess. This limitation hasbeen addressed and HP BASICIUXnow provides the capability to executeas a background process and supportfor redirected input and output hasalso been included. This combination of redirected 110and background operation allowsHP BASICIUX to behave more Likeother HP-UX programs and providesa number of useful capabilities toHP BASIC users that were notavailable before. For example, the standard HP-UX croncapability can be used to execute anHP BASIC program at a specified time. The cron utility waits until the appropriatetime, executes the HP BASICprogram. and then exits. It sounds simple, but to do the same task in a previousrevision of HP BASICIUX requiredthat the HP BASIC program monitorthe time and execute the appropriatesubprogram when the time comes.Since the cron utility uses much lesssystem resources to monitor the timeof day, this new solution will free up asignificant amount of CPU power thatcan be used for other tasks.Product detailsThe 5.52 revision of HP BASICIUXwill be released concurrently with theHP-UX 7.0 release. Product structurewill remain the same as previous revisions. No changes will be made to theHP Price List since this product issimply a new revision of the existingproduct. Therefore, ordering this newrevision of HP BASICIUX will be thesame as ordering earlier versions.Previous revisions of the HP BASICIUXproduct will not be available for saleafter the release of the 5.52 revision ofHP BASICIUX. DesktopEZSA: a winning architecture on theHP Vectra 486 PCThe new HP Vectra 486 PC is Hewlett-Packard's first personal computer thatincorporates the new Extended IndustrStandard Architecture (EISA). EISAis a 32-bit extension to the Industry-Standard Architecture (ISA) and providesnumerous benefits to users.Open standardEISA was developed by a consortium ofnine PC manufacturers. including HP.It is an open standard that has receivedbroad industry support and provides allthe benefits of an open standard: competitivepricing of products, technologicalinnovation, and the freedom tochoose from multiple vendors. By purchasinga PC with an open architecture,EISA users will have the widest varietyof PCs and peripherals from which tochoose to meet their unique computingneeds.EISA on high-performance PCsHP incorporates the EISA standardwhere it makes sense - on the leadingedge of high-power computing. Whilemost users will find sufficient computingpower in HP's 80386-based ISAPCs, the HP Vectra 486 PC provides32-bit flagship power for the mostdemanding power users who work inemerging high-performance solutionssuch as LANs, multiuser databases, networks, transaction processing, andmultiuser applications.Backward compatibilityBecause EISA is an extension of theIndustry-Standard Architecture, it isfully backward compatible with literallythousands of cards and hardware accessoriesthat are on the market today.Users who purchase the HP Vectra 486PC may insiall both ISA as well as newEISA boards. The backward compatibilityof EISA also provides a smoothmigration path for users who wish tomove from ISA to EISA PCs. This is instark contrast to IBM's Micro Channelarchitecture, which is incompatiblewith ISAIAT accessories.EISA performance benefitsThe EISA architecture providesnumerous technological benefits thatprovide performance or ease-of-useenhancements:Support of bus masters - allowsperipherals to off load the mainprocessor for faster throughputDirect Memon Access (DMA)capability - improves overall systemperformanceEISA Cotlfiguration Utility - facilitatesautomatic configuration ofoption boardsFaster data transfer rates (32- versus16-bit)EISA is a winning architecture on theHP Vectra 486 PC which gives usersthe technological and performanceedge.DesktopEISA solutwnsWith the introduction of Hewlett-Packard's first EISA system this fall, there will be EISA add-on cards availablefrom a variety of independenthardware vendors. These EISA solutionswill most likely be in the networking, multiuser, video, and hard diskaccess areas. The majority of these will be 32-bitbus master cards. Bus mastering, whichis not available on 16-bit ISA cards, allows the EISA card to use the CPUresource more efficiently.Hewlett-Packard will perform somecompatibility testing on a subset ofEISA cards and they will be listedin the Technical Reference Guide(Blue Book).

DesktopI Introducing EASY CONHG- the EZSAconfguratwn utilityslot 1 9slot Zslot 3KME TCIPE CONTROLLERProduct structureEASY CONFIG will be a part of thenew, improved PC kit that will beginshipping with HP's first EISA product. The files necessary for EASY CONFIGoperation will reside on the disksincluded with the PC kit. As part of thesetup procedure. users will be asked tocopy the relevant files from the PC kitdisks to their hard disk and proceedwith installation. Another added featureaiding quick setup will be the inclusionof a summary foldout sheet showing thesetup procedure in "flowchart" orblock form.SummaryIn summary, EASY CONFIG is a softwareutility that will significantly facilitatethe setup process for a variety ofPCs (both EISA and ISA based). The EISA configuration utility (hereafterreferred to by the HP name ofEASY CONFIG) is a new software utilitythat will perform configuration andsetup functions for future EISA andISA HP personal computers. The utilitygenerates the configuration informationfor EISA programmable 110 cards andprovides information for the user onhow to set switches and jumpers onearlier-design ISA boards. It is areplacement for the current setup utilityshipped with the current HP Vectra PCproduct line (it will not be backwardcompatible to these earlier machines.)EASY CONFIG is scheduled to beintroduced with HP's first EISA offeringand will ship with future EISA andISA PCs from HP.HP played a key role in helping todevelop this utility, providing personneland other critical resources to make thisproduct a reality. This leadership is inkeeping with the pivotal role that HPhas played in the development of theEISA standard. With the current ISA architecture, auser configuring a new system or addingaccessory cards faces a complexand inconvenient process. With the currentsetup methodology, the user mustread detailed technical documentation, set switches and jumpers, plug inboards, then test the system to see ifsetup was successful. The cause for anunsuccessful setup is not always apparentand can leave the user with littleassistance to solve the problem. EASYCONFIG eases this problem by takingadvantage of the fact that EISA boardscan be designed to be configured withoutthe use of switches and jumpers.(The presence of these physical jumpersand switches largely contributes to thefact that the ISA setup process is heavilymanual.) EASY CONFIG will autoconfigureEISA boards, including thesystem board, and autodetect some ISAboards, besides giving configurationassistance for all these accessories.Direct user benefits include:Autoconfiguration of EISA cardsAutodetection of some ISA cardsSetup assistance for all users withmore complex configurationsProduct line consistency (will runacross a variety of HP PCs: helpsprotect investment in HP product)Industry-standard compatibility

Thistransfer rate represents a 33 percentimprovement over Compaq's recentlyannounced 15 Mbitlsec. hard drivelcontroller subsystem for its 33-MHz386 PC.In addition to their outstanding performance.these high-capacity drives havereliability levels to match; i.e. theirmean time between failure (MTBF)projection is for 150,000 hours, or threetimes the industry average. So, whenstate-of-the-art hard disk speed, capacity, and reliability are critical to usersatisfaction, these drives are trulysecond to none.In situations where users demand theprocessor performance of our newHP Vectra 486 PC, but don't needexceptionally high disk drive capacityor performance, the 10 Mbitisec.152-Mbyte ESDI drives will servethem very well. Those users can stillexpand up to 304 Mbytes with a second152-Mbyte drive, or even 822 Mbytesif future needs dictate by adding a670-Mbyte drive, since both drivesoperate off the 20 Mbitlsec. ESDI controller. In addition, the average seektime of 16 ms for the 152-Mbyte deviceis at a leading edge level for that importantparameter. Finally, for users who have minimalhard disk capacity requirements todayand do not expect those needs to growsignificantly in the immediate future, the 84-Mbyte drive with an embeddedAT interface controller is an excellentchoice. This drive has very good performanceby virtue of its 19-ms seektime, and ESD1-equivalent data transfercapability ( - 10 Mbitisec). An addedbenefit of using the 84-Mbyte drive isthat the controller is embedded on thedrive itself, therefore, another expansionslot is made available. All four drives will be available for theHP Vectra 486 PC introduction in early1990, however, final pricing has not yetbeen approved. Ordering information, including pricing and product numbers, will be made available in December.

In addition to the new UNIXoperating system, HP will add threenew accessories for multiuser HP VcctraPCs: the HP Terminal MultiplexorKit, a new 120-Mbyte tape backup unit;and VPiix for running DOS applicationsunder UNIX systems. All ofthese ncw products will be available inNovember 1989. (In Europe, only theSCO UNIX product will be available inNovember, the balance of the productswill be available during the first calendarquarter of 1990.)PC multiuser systems are essentially"minicomputers at a PC price." Aswith larger minicomputers. PC multiusersystems arc used primarily fortransaction processing, including orderentry. accounting, and database applications.PC LANs are better suited forgraphics, heavy word processing, andcomplex spreadsheet applications, butuse PCs instead of terminals and, therefore.have a greater cost per user thanPC multiuser systems. With an annual growth rate of 25 to 30percent, the $1.5 billion PC multiusermarket is one of the fastest growingsegments of the overall PC markettoday. This growth has been fueled bydramatic improvements in PC price1performance and the emergence ofindustry-standard UNIX for PCs. SCOis the acknowledged leader in PC UNIXoperating systems with a market shareof over 80 percent. More than 2,000applications have been developed orported to run on SCO UNIX.PC multiuser systems are a popularsolution for users who need a low-costper-userconiputer system for running asmall- to medium-sized business, franchisedoperation, or department of alarger corporation. These types ofmission-critical applications demandthe most reliable systems. such asHP Vectra PCs. Mass StorclgcHP brings 20 Gbytes of r pewritable opticalstorage online - the HP Series 6300Model 20GWALast April, Hewlett-Packard becamethe first major systems vendor tointroduce a rewritable optical diskdrive - the Series 6300 Model 650lA(PIN C1700A). Now HP expands thisleadership position with the introductionof a 20.8-Gbyte rewritable opticaldisk library system. The HP Series6300 Model 20GB/A, which was previewedat INTEREX in September, isnow on the November 1 HP Price List.BenefitsThe HP Series 6300 Model 20GBlAcombines the convenience and low storagecost of optical disk technology withthe massive capacity of a library systemto provide online access to vast amountsof infrequently accessed information. ina fraction of the space of other storagemedia. Just like the stand-alone subsystem, the HP Series 6300 Model20GBlA is a direct-access secondarystorage (DASS) device that fills theprice-performance gap between highperformancehard disks and low-costtape storage. Because of its huge storagecapacity and low cost per megabyte, the autochanger revolutionalizestraditional mass storage by bringingmore offline information online. The HP Series 6300 Model 20GBlAis also ideal for automating laborintensivebackuplrecovery processes.Value-added businesses will alsoquickly see its clear benefits whenaddressing specific applications requiringreliable, low-cost, high-capacitystorage, such as archiving. The HP 6300 Model 20GBlA takesadvantage of magneto-optical technologyto write and read data on removable, very durable 5%-inch disks.Optical disks are not susceptible tohead crashes and are much more tolerantof magnetic interference than magneticmedia. Because the laser focusesonly on the disk's inner recordinglayer - which is well sealed in a hardpolycarbonate coating - fingerprintsand even small scratches on its surfacehave no effect on the data. Data can lastmore than 10 years without the retensioningor reconditioning that tapesrequire. How does it work? The HP Series 6300 Model 20GBlAconsists of an autochanger, two opticaldisk drives, and 32 5 %-inch (650-Mbyte) optical disk cartridges all ina small deskside cabinet. A convenientmail slot makes it easy to load orremove media. The autochanger automaticallyselects the appropriate cartridgeand inserts it into one of its twointernal drives. The whole operation istransparent to users who see only aslightly slower response time whenaccessing their data, approximately 100msec if a disk is already in the drive, orabout 10 to 15 seconds if a disk needs tobe exchanged. Since the operating system(HP-UX 7.0) recognizes each diskside as a 325-Mbyte mountable file system, full data access and software compatibilityis maintained as if it were ahard disk (a slower hard disk). If you are concerned about reliability, you need not be. Realizing the importanceof reliability in an autochangerproduct, HP designed this autochangerwith an MTBF twice that of the industryaverage. HP's unique "passive payload"design eliminates many of thefailure-prone components from thetransport mechanism. Unlike competitors'complex designs, motors, sensors, and electronic cables are not attached toHP's autochanger arm, therefore, makingour design more reliable.Support of industry standardsThe HP Series 6300 Model 20GBIAprotects your long-term investment byconforming to industry standards. TheModel 20GBlA conforms to the ANSIand IS0 definition for rewritable 5 %-inch media, providing compatibilitywith the Model 6501A as well as therewritable optical drives and mediaof other vendors. In keeping with ourcommitment to supporting industrystandards, the Model 20GBlA alsoimplements the SCSI interface. Additionalinterfaces, such as HP-FL, arecurrently under investigation.

Muss SromgeHP addresses new applications with HP Series6300 Model 2OGB/A rewritable optical disklibrary systemHP's new Series 6300 Model 20GBlA I Unattended backuplrestorerewritable optical disk library systemoffers over 20 Gbytes of reliable, lowcost, random access storage in less than3 % square feet of floor space. Thisprovides opportunities for improvingexisting storage procedures as well asaddressing new application areas previouslyimpossible due to high onlinestorage costs.Online archive"Given the choice, all data would bekept online," is the overriding sentimentof users and industry analysts, yetover 99 percent of all business informationresides offline either on paper, microfilm, or tape. The Model 20GBlAoffers many significant advantages inarchival applications.First, optical media is not only durable,it's made for long-term storage - lastingmore than 10 years with no data degradationor the regular maintenancerequired of tapes.Second, ANSI and IS0 standards allowfor media interchange and future drivecompatibility.Third, information is directly accessible.Users have their data when theyneed it without the need of an operatorsearching their archives for the righttape. Another significant advantage issecurity. Optical disks can be individuallywrite protected, the media canbe locked in the autochanger, or inextreme situations, disks can beremoved through the mail slot andlocked in a safe."Unattended," "lights out," and "operatorless"are the buzz words of today'sinformation managers seeking betterbackup solutions. With shrinking operatingbudgets, labor-intensive backuppractices are less acceptable. TheModel 20GBlA offers a better way. With a capacity of over 20 Gbytes, users can automate their backup1recovery processes with capacity tospare. Not only does automated backupprovide added security, operators andsystem managers are freed up to performother tasks.Because the Model 20GBlA is fullycompatible with the HP-UX 7.0 operatingsystem, existing backup commandscan be used without modification.Users can also write simple HP-UXscripts to automate the process, or takeadvantage of more sophisticated backuputilities that will be available in thefuture.Note that backup performance onHP-UX, especially over a network, hascertain limitations. For true throughputnumbers, a case-by-case performanceanalysis should be conducted takinginto account the HP-UX file system, system 110, and network overhead.Electronic image managementImage data (documents) is an importantinformation resource of any organization. But because images require suchlarge amounts of storage space (over1 Mbyte for an 8x10 page scanned at300 dpi), imageldocument data hastraditionally been kept offline on paperor microfilm. With optical storage, thisdata can be stored online and electronicallymanaged and shared among manyusers at different locations. As an example, some engineering managementsoftware (such as that offeredby GTX Corporation of Phoenix, Arizona)allows vast numbers of scannedengineering drawings to be storedonline with the Model 20GBlA. Notonly are storage space and labor costsreduced, but the data are directly accessiblefor retrieval, modification, andelectronic distribution. Software fordocument image management, such asthat which was demonstrated by HP atINTEREX in September will also beavailable soon. We'll keep you informedas these and other solutions becomeavailable.HP's Direct Access Secondary Storage(DASS) products open the door to awide variety of applications that werepreviously limited by high storage costsor poor access performance. Use yourimagination when building solutions.

As promised, shipmentsof the HP Series 6300 Model650/A began in June. This industrystandarddrive gives durable, removablemedia with direct access to 650 Mbytesof data per 5 %-inch disk (325 Mbytesper side). Positioned as Direct AccessSecondary Storage (DASS), it helpsfill the price-performance gap betweenhard disks and tape. Since announcingthe product eight months ago. we havemade significant progress on plannedhost support. Here is an update foryour information.HP 9000 Series 300The HP Series 6300 Model 6501A iscurrently supported under HP-UX 6.5with SCSI. The next revision of Pascal, expected in the first half of 1990, willprovide support with a new SCSI driver.Support is also planned with SCSI onthe 6.0 revision of Rocky MountainBASIC, now scheduled for release inthe first calendar half of 1990.HP 9000 Series 800Support for the Model 650/A is plannedfor HP-UX release 8.0 with SCSI in thesecond half of 1990.An HP SCSI card for the 1000 is nowunder development. The current plan isfor introduction of this card in the secondquarter of 1990. Boot device supportfor the Model 650/A is plannedwith the initial release.Apollo workstationsApollo Systems Division - a subsidiaryof HP - is currently working tosupport the rewritable optical disk driveon its systems using SCSI. Supportshould be available by mid-1990.900 Series HP 3000 (MPE XL)Support for the stand-alone drive isnow under investigation (as a subsetof optical autochanger support) for the1991 timeframe. Alternate support connectionsthat might allow us to providethis support earlier are also underinvestigation. In addition, DS copycommands can be used to transfer datato a Model 650/A connected to anHP 9000 Series 300 workstation.HP Vectra PC, IBM compatible PCs,and MacintoshHP is developing third-party solutionsusing the SCSI interface and driversoftware that would allow connectionof the Model 650/A on HP Vectra PC,Macintosh. IBM PCs, and compatibles. These solutions should be ready inthe tirst quarter of 1990. Initially, weintend to make these solutions availableSummarySun and DECHP is testing several interface cards forconnectivity to DEC and Sun systems.Sales and support for these configurationswill be provided through a limitednumber of regional distributors and isexpected to begin in first quarter 1990.HP direct sales force distribution is notplanned.HP-IB interfaceAs more and more HP host systemsmove toward providing support formass storage peripherals with SCSl,the market for an HP-IB version of theModel 650/A is diminishing. We havereceived feedback from the field thatwithout an HP-IB interface, manyinstalled base customers feel this newtechnology is unavailable to them. However, there are now solutions for1 optical support with SCSI on almost allhost systems in the foreseeable future. For this reason, we are not planning todevelop an HP-IB interface for thisproduct.I systemp Operating system Version Availability IHP 9000 Series 300 HP-UX 6.5 Available nowPascal next First half 1990Rocky MountainBASIC 6.0 First half 1990Series 800 HP-UX 8.0 Second half FY90HP 1000 A-Series RTE-A Second quarter FY90Apollo Domain Planned for 1990HP 3000 900 Series MPE XL Under investigationMICRO, Series 70 MPE VNot plannedHP Vectra PC MS-DOS First quarter FY90MacintoshDEC, SunFirst quarter FY90First quarter FY90
