Your doctor has weighed therisks of you taking <strong>Colese</strong> against thebenefits they expect it will have foryou.If you have any concerns abouttaking this medicine, talk to yourdoctor or pharmacist.Keep this leaflet with yourmedicine.You may need to read it again.What <strong>Colese</strong> is usedfor<strong>Colese</strong> is used to relieve thesymptoms of irritable bowelsyndrome, such as:* stomach cramps or pain* bowel spasms* diarrhoea, which may alternatewith periods of constipation* flatulence (wind).<strong>Colese</strong> belongs to a group ofmedicines called antispasmodicagents. These medicines work byrelaxing the muscles in the gut,thereby relieving the contractions orspasms.Ask your doctor if you have anyquestions about why <strong>Colese</strong> hasbeen prescribed for you.Your doctor may have prescribed<strong>Colese</strong> for another reason.<strong>Colese</strong> is available only with adoctor's prescription.There is no evidence that <strong>Colese</strong> isaddictive.Before you take <strong>Colese</strong>When you must not take itDo not take <strong>Colese</strong> if you areallergic to medicines containingmebeverine hydrochloride or anyof the ingredients listed at the endof this leaflet.Some of the symptoms of an allergicreaction may include skin rash,itching or hives; swelling of the face,lips or tongue which may causedifficulty in swallowing or breathing,wheezing or shortness of breath.Do not take <strong>Colese</strong> if the expirydate (EXP.) printed on the packhas passed.Do not take <strong>Colese</strong> if the packagingshows signs of tampering or thetablets do not look quite right.If you are not sure whether youshould start taking this medicine,talk to your doctor.Before you start to take itTell your doctor if you are allergicto any other medicines, foods, dyesor preservatives.Tell your doctor if you arepregnant or plan to becomepregnant.<strong>Colese</strong> is not recommended duringthe first three months of pregnancy.Your doctor will discuss the risksand benefits of taking <strong>Colese</strong> duringpregnancy.Tell your doctor if you arebreastfeeding or wish tobreastfeed.<strong>Colese</strong> passes into breast milk andmay affect your baby. Your doctorwill discuss the risks and benefits oftaking <strong>Colese</strong> when breastfeeding.Tell your doctor if you have anymedical conditions, especially thefollowing:* angina or other heart problems* liver problems* kidney problems* lactose intolerance.Your doctor may want to take specialcare if you have any of theseconditions.If you have not told your doctorabout any of the above, tell thembefore you start taking <strong>Colese</strong>.Taking other medicinesTell your doctor if you are takingany other medicines, including anythat you buy without aprescription from a pharmacy,supermarket or health food shop.Some medicines may be affected by<strong>Colese</strong>, or may affect how well itworks.COLESE 1


How to take <strong>Colese</strong>Follow all directions given to youby your doctor and pharmacistcarefully.These directions may differ from theinformation contained in this leaflet.If you do not understand theinstructions on the box, ask yourdoctor or pharmacist for help.How much to takeThe usual dose is one tablet (135 mg)three times a day.Your doctor may gradually reducethe dose after several weeks if yoursymptoms improve while on <strong>Colese</strong>.How to take <strong>Colese</strong>Swallow the tablets with a glass ofwater.When to take <strong>Colese</strong>Take <strong>Colese</strong> at about the same timeeach day.This will allow <strong>Colese</strong> to have itsbest effect and also help youremember when to take it.Take <strong>Colese</strong> immediately before orwith food.How long to take <strong>Colese</strong> forKeep taking <strong>Colese</strong> for as long asyour doctor recommends.If you forget to take <strong>Colese</strong>If it is almost time for your nextdose, skip the dose you missed andtake your next dose when you aremeant to.Otherwise, take the missed dose assoon as you remember, and then goback to taking your tablets as youwould normally.Do not take a double dose to makeup for the dose you missed.If you have any questions or arenot sure what to do, ask yourdoctor or pharmacist.If you take too much <strong>Colese</strong>(overdose)Immediately telephone yourdoctor, or the Poisons InformationCentre (telephone 13 11 26) if youthink you or anyone else may havetaken too much <strong>Colese</strong>. Do thiseven if there are no signs ofdiscomfort or poisoning.While you are taking<strong>Colese</strong>Things you must doBefore starting any new medicine,tell your doctor or pharmacist thatyou are taking <strong>Colese</strong>.Tell all the doctors, dentists andpharmacists who are treating youthat you are taking <strong>Colese</strong>.If you become pregnant whiletaking <strong>Colese</strong>, tell your doctor.Visit your doctor regularly so theycan check on your progress.Things you must not doDo not use <strong>Colese</strong> to treat anyother conditions unless your doctortells you to.Do not give <strong>Colese</strong> to anyone else,even if they have the samecondition as you.Things to be careful ofBe careful driving or operatingmachinery until you know how<strong>Colese</strong> affects you.<strong>Colese</strong> may cause dizziness in somepeople. If this occurs, do not drive,operate machinery or do anythingelse that could be dangerous.Side effectsTell your doctor or pharmacist assoon as possible if you do not feelwell while you are taking <strong>Colese</strong>.<strong>Colese</strong> helps most people withirritable bowel syndrome, but it mayhave unwanted side effects in a fewpeople.All medicines can have side effects.Sometimes they are serious, most ofthe time they are not. You may needmedical treatment if you get some ofthe side effects.Do not be alarmed by this list ofpossible side effects.You may not experience any of them.Ask your doctor or pharmacist toanswer any questions you mayhave.Tell your doctor if you notice anyof the following and they worryyou:* dizziness* headache* heartburn, indigestion* constipation* loss of appetite* feeling generally unwell* difficulty sleeping* slow heart beat.Tell your doctor if you noticeanything that is making you feelunwell.Other side effects not listed abovemay also occur in some patients.After taking <strong>Colese</strong>StorageKeep <strong>Colese</strong> where children cannotreach it.A locked cupboard at leastone-and-a-half metres above theground is a good place to storemedicines.COLESE 2
