Congressman George Miller invitedD’Vondre Woodards to President Obama’sState of the Union Address recently.D’Vondre is a student here at <strong>Contra</strong> <strong>Costa</strong><strong>College</strong> majoring in Radiology Technology.D’Vondre is considered around town as aPeacemaker. He is involved with the nonviolentcampaigns in Richmond and workswith the Office of Neighborhood Safety.D’Vondre plans to transfer to Morehouse<strong>College</strong> in Atlanta, GA or Howard Universityin Washington, DC after completing hisstudies here at CCC. When asked byPresident Dan Henry about his State of theUnion experience, he said, “the visit mademe want to get more involved in my cityand I realize now that the world is so muchbigger than my little city.”Construction Updates . . . SPRING 2012Tearing down the old, building up the new…Measure A construction is in full swingat <strong>Contra</strong> <strong>Costa</strong> <strong>College</strong>:Phase I of the Football Field will be upgradingthe visitor bleachers. The construction willinclude adding a ramp and landing area for ADAaccessibility.The project is scheduled to start March 1 andcompleted by March 30.Phase II of the Football Field construction willinclude new sprinklers under the home bleachers,renovated bathrooms, a new roof over one of thehandball courts, and adjusting the height of theconcession stand to meet ADA compliances.• An elevator will be installed in the Gym Annex.Work is currently being done to bring the firesystem up to code. The installation of the elevator isscheduled to begin October 2012.• Parking Lot#16 drawings have been revised toinclude paving. The project is scheduled to becompleted mid-Fall 2012.• The Music building is undergoing a majorrenovation. The project includes smart classrooms,a small performance venue and recording studio.The anticipated completion date is early fall 2012.Students can expect to occupy the facility in timefor the spring 2013 semester.• Seismic testing continues to be conducted on thesite of the Campus Center. If approved, demolitionof the Humanities building and Student Lifebuildings will take place early fall 2012 in preparationof the Campus Center site. The Campus Centerwill include,Administration, Student Life, CulinaryArts, Fireside Room, cafeteria and classrooms. TheCampus Center is estimated to be a three-yearproject scheduled for completion in 2015.SPRING 6 2012
