Honoring Deceased Pets
Creates Scholarships
Donor News
Losing a beloved companion animal is
difficult for anyone who has enjoyed a
pet’s unconditional love and loyalty. The
Pet Memorial Program gives veterinarians
or pet owners a chance to honor
the memory of a special companion
animal while providing veterinary
students with scholarship assistance.
Gifts help to ensure that new veterinarians
will be as skilled and caring as the
doctor who cared for the deceased pet.
When a donation is made, the college
sends a sympathy card to the pet
owner.
Since the program was established last
year, over $7,000 in contributions have
been received and the college has sent
out more than 600 condolence cards.
Todd Olney, director of development for
the college, says the goal is to give
eight $1,000 scholarships to veterinary
students this spring.
Many veterinarians and pet owners in
Oregon are experiencing gratitude for
the program. “We’ve had great feedback
on your Pet Memorial Program,”
says Dr. Marie Vandaveer from the Bush
Animal Clinic, in Bend, Oregon. “Thanks
for offering it.”
A client who lost a pet says: “Today I
received the most beautiful card from
you about the memorial for Shena, and
the donation made in her honor...
Shena was my life and my best friend….
Thank you so much for your card and
thoughts.”
ois Bates Acheson, an avid
horsewoman and long-time
supporter of the College of
Veterinary Medicine, died of
natural causes on August 29, 2004.
The college mourns her passing and is
grateful for her substantial support over
her lifetime.
Acheson was born in Barton, Oregon,
and graduated from Oregon State’s College
of Business in 1937. After the death of her
husband, Robert, in 1963, she became
president of the Black Ball Transport Inc.,
a trucking and international ferry boat
company in Seattle, making her one of the
of Commerce’s Board of Trustees. Survivors
include a stepson, a stepdaughter-in-law,
12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Acheson’s niece, Donna Schoen, is
executor for the estate.
Acheson made significant unrestricted
contributions to the college over the years,
and in 1986 endowed a scholarship fund
for veterinary students. The bulk of her
estate will support students, programs, and
faculty of the college.
