Department Name Change
Effective in late 2003, the Department
of Large Animal Clinical Sciences was
renamed the Department of Clinical
Sciences. This name change reflects
consolidation of the curriculum on the
OSU campus to include small and exotic
animal medicine and surgery.
Clinical Sciences Updates
Dr. David Sisson has accepted
the position of department head
for the Department of Clinical
Sciences. He assumed responsibilities
for faculty hiring this
summer and will be in Corvallis
in mid-January. During his
tenure in the Department of
Veterinary Clinical Medicine at
the University of Illinois, Dr.
Sisson developed a respected
research program dedicated to
the investigation of the causes
and treatment of heart disease
in companion animals. He has
authored numerous refereed
scientific articles and book
Beginning in January 2005, the
College of Veterinary Medicine
will offer a canine reproduction
service as part of many referral
services offered within the new
Small Animal Teaching Hospital. The
fertility and infertility service will offer
artificial insemination with cooled,
shipped, and frozen semen; pregnancy
diagnosis with ultrasonography; semen
collection; and evaluation and freezing.
Complete breeding soundness examinations
for both female and male dogs will
also be offered.
Fourth-year veterinary students will
gain valuable clinical experience working
with these cases under the direction of
Dr. Michelle Kutzler, assistant professor
in clinical sciences. In addition, senior
veterinary students can take an elective
course in advanced small animal reproduction
to learn about the clinical
management of reproductive, lactational,
and neonatal diseases in small animals.
Lectures focus on the clinical management
of female and male canine fertility and
infertility, but also include management
of reproductive problems in cats, small
mammals, birds, and fish.
chapters and is co-editor and author of
Textbook of Canine and Feline Cardiology,
Principles and Clinical Practice. His research
interests include neuroendocrine responses
to acute and chronic heart disease and heart
failure, and the development of biomarkers
of heart disease and heart failure.
Dr. Sisson obtained his DVM from
the University of California, Davis, and
completed an internship at Cornell
University in New York. He has board
certification from the American College of
Veterinary Internal Medicine specializing
in cardiology.
Dr. Craig Mosley joined the college this
summer as an assistant professor and
Research in canine reproduction is
an important part of the reproduction
program within the College of Veterinary
Medicine. In collaboration with Dr. Mike
Peterson, associate veterinarian at Reid
Animal Hospital in Albany, Oregon,
Dr. Kutzler is investigating the efficacy of
using a long-acting, injectable, gonadotropin-releasing
hormone (GnRH) analog
(BioRelease Deslorelin, BETPharm,
Lexington, Kentucky) for estrus induction
in breeding female dogs. Preliminary
results indicate this is an easy and reliable
method for manipulating the estrous cycle
in dogs, which could be easily applied in a
small animal clinical practice.
Also in collaboration with Dr.
Peterson, Dr. Kutzler is investigating the
effects of airport radiation on canine
semen quality. Briefly, semen from male
dogs with normal fertility is collected,
diluted with extenders, cooled to 4ºC and
passed through an airport luggage scanner
(CRX) at the Portland International
Airport. Following radiation exposure,
alterations in sperm motility, morphology,
and DNA structure are determined.
veterinary anesthesiologist. He received
his DVM, master’s, and clinical residency
in veterinary anesthesia (2000) at Ontario
Veterinary College, University of Guelph,
Canada. He has board certification with
the American College of Veterinary
Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Brady Bergin was hired this summer
as a clinical assistant professor, rural
veterinary practice. He received his DVM
at the College of Veterinary Medicine and
Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State
University in 2002.
