The hermitage museum
For most people St Petersburg is inexorably connected with its great art
museum, the Hermitage, housed in the former residence of the Tsars,
the Winter Palace. Built for Tsarina Elizabeth by the Italian born
architect, Rastrelli, the Winter Palace had been a winter residence of the
Tsars until 1904, when increasing unrest forced Nicholas II and his
family to retreat to Tsarskoe Selo. During World War I it was used as a
hospital for invalids. In July 1917 the Provisional Government took over
the palace as its headquarters and this led in turn to its storming by the
Bolsheviks who nationalised the collection. Our day is spent uncovering
the many galleries and exploring the amazing collection housed in this
extraordinary museum. This evening we gather to enjoy a welcome
dinner in a local restaurant. (B, D)
Wednesday 18 September
Touring st petersburg
This morning we depart by coach on a city tour of St Petersburg. Our
first port of call is the Peter and Paul fortress, built by Peter the Great in
1703 it is the first and oldest landmark in St. Petersburg. Several
buildings are contained within the fortress, the Peter and Paul Cathedral
being the most notable as it contains the tombs of almost all the Russian
rulers from Peter the Great; Tsar Nicholas II and his family were finally
laid to rest here in July 1998 on the 80th anniversary of their executions.
We visit St Isaac’s Cathedral whose gilded dome dominates the St
Petersburg skyline while its facades are decorated in sculpture and red
granite columns, the interiors are adorned with detailed mosaic icons,
paintings and columns of lapis lazuli and malachite. We stop at
Leningrad Blockade Memorial which poignantly evokes the 900 day
siege of Leningrad (1941-1944) and acts as an important reminder of
great hardships endured by its people during World War II. This
afternoon we explore the canals of St Petersburg by boat. (B)
Thursday September 19
Catherine’s palace
This morning we drive the short distance to Tsarskoe Selo, formerly
Pushkin, where we visit magnificent Catherine’s Palace. Built for Tsarina
Elizabeth by Rastrelli in 1752 in the rococo style it was named Catherine
in honour of her mother, Catherine l, wife of Peter the Great. Catherine
the Great commissioned a Scottish architect Charles Cameron to design
the glorious gardens and construct the personal apartments of the
Empress. The palace which was very badly damaged during the German
occupation in World War ll, leaving only a hollow shell behind has since
been lovingly restored. Inside the palace, our tour takes us through the
restored gentlemen-in–waiting’s dining room, the dazzling Great Hall,
State Dining Room, Crimson and Green Pilaster rooms and the portrait
room. We also visit the legendary Amber room which was restored largely
with German funds and re-opened in 2004. We break for lunch at
Podvorye Restaurant located in a typical Russian log house and serving
traditional Russian cuisine. After lunch we explore Pavlovsk Park again
Russia’s greatest poets, who lived most of her life in St Petersburg and
whose life and poetry reflects the tragedy that befell the Russian people
during the wars, the Revolution, and the years of Stalinist repression. The
museum is located in the southern garden wing of the former Sheremetev
Palace where she lived for 30 years from the mid 1920’s. This afternoon
Tsar Nicholas ll and along with the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow contains
soul-searching works of the Wanderers, the explosion of Symbolism and
Stalinist Social Realism, the works mirror Russia’s history. Today the
Today we visit Yusupov Palace, situated on the Moika Canal it is one of
the most beautiful palaces in St Petersburg containing a series of
Russia, was murdered in disputed circumstances by Prince Felix Yusupov
in 1916. Shortly after Rasputin’s murder, the Soviets came to power and
confiscated the palace from the nobles. Today it serves as a Palace of
Culture for educators as well as the Rasputin Museum. We stroll through
the Kuznechny market, an experience not to be missed and the most
vibrant in St Petersburg where vendors sell all manner of fresh produce
What makes our
tours different?
> Outstanding tour leaders. All our leaders
possess extensive knowledge of the
places visited on a journey, skills in
communicating this knowledge to an
interested audience and practical skills
in managing a group journey. Most of all
our leaders have a love and enthusiasm
for the places you visit!
> Itineraries planned around carefully
thought-out historical and cultural
themes, rather than superficial
‘panoramic’ tours. You have time to
build up an in-depth understanding and
appreciation of what you see, not just a
check-list of famous sites.
> Extended stays in most destinations,
rather than one- or two-night hops.
This allows you the chance to get to
know the places you visit, time to
pursue individual sightseeing and the
opportunity to simply relax and watch
the world go by. It also means you can
attend to practical matters, such as
laundry and emails, with ease.
> Background talks before you visit sites,
museums and galleries. This leaves you
free to spend your time actually looking at
the things you’ve travelled to see, rather
than straining to listen to a local tour
guide. Through the background talks you’ll
also build up a coherent understanding
of the country you’re visiting, not just a
fragmented set of facts.
> Extensive tour notes, reading lists and
pre-departure notes. For every tour
we provide detailed tour notes on the
specific sites we visit, a general historical
and social background of the countries
you visit and practical information about
travel arrangements.
Who participates
in our tours?
Academy Travel’s tours are open to
everyone, but they are not for everyone.
They appeal to those who want to move
beyond mass tourism, either because they
have considerable travel experience or have
a strong interest in a particular place or
period. Very often participants are regular
independent travellers, but have chosen
to join the group because of the special
attraction of the itinerary or the expertise of
the group leader. The opportunity to travel
with like-minded people is one of the main
appeals of our program.
There is no minimum or maximum age
limit for tour members. All we ask for is
a reasonable level of fitness, interest
and enthusiasm.
