Sinterklaas Arrival<br />

Sinterklaas arrives from Spain in the<br />

Netherlands every year on the 2nd <strong>or</strong> 3rd<br />

weekend in November, visiting different<br />

<strong>to</strong>wns at various times. As in past years,<br />

he will arrive aboard the SS Madrid in<br />

Scheveningen Harb<strong>or</strong> on Saturday, November<br />

17. After his arrival at 11:30, he will make<br />

his way on his white h<strong>or</strong>se, accompanied by a<br />

full parade <strong>of</strong> Zwarte Piets, through the streets<br />

<strong>of</strong> Scheveningen and the Statenkwartier in<strong>to</strong><br />

The Hague Centrum. Even if you don’t have<br />

young children, this annual event is uniquely<br />

Dutch and is quite a wonderful sight <strong>to</strong> see.<br />

International Food Fair<br />

The Parish <strong>of</strong> the Church <strong>of</strong> Our Saviour<br />

spons<strong>or</strong>s this large-scale International Food<br />

Fair every November f<strong>or</strong> charity. The diverse<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the parish community come <strong>to</strong>gether<br />

<strong>to</strong> provide entertainment and <strong>to</strong> prepare<br />

and sell their own national food specialties,<br />

wines, pastries and handicrafts. Each country<br />

<strong>or</strong> region takes pride in dec<strong>or</strong>ating their<br />

booths with national flags and w<strong>or</strong>king <strong>to</strong>gether<br />

as a team. There are kid’s activities,<br />

a raffle with wonderful prizes, a large used<br />

English book sale and a flea market.<br />

This fair doesn’t only promote local community<br />

spirit. The event’s proceeds are donated<br />

<strong>to</strong> several charitable <strong>or</strong>ganizations around<br />

the w<strong>or</strong>ld f<strong>or</strong> life-sustaining projects. These<br />

projects include farming, carpentry, women’s<br />

supp<strong>or</strong>t, street children education and reha-<br />

bilitation f<strong>or</strong> homeless people, <strong>to</strong> name just<br />

a few. In 2011, the fair raised € 42,000 with<br />

funds dispersed <strong>to</strong> charities in 19 countries!<br />

Documentary Film Festival<br />

Creative documentaries take center stage during<br />

the 25th International Documentary Film<br />

Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), one <strong>of</strong> the leading<br />

documentary film festivals in the w<strong>or</strong>ld.<br />

The IDFA is the place f<strong>or</strong> documentaries that<br />

are cinematically intriguing <strong>or</strong> innovative,<br />

that are relevant <strong>or</strong> highly <strong>to</strong>pical <strong>to</strong> society at<br />

large, and that stimulate the <strong>view</strong>er <strong>to</strong> reflect,<br />

discuss and ask questions.<br />

Antique and Art Fair<br />

PAN Amsterdam, the Netherlands’ premier art<br />

and antiques fair, will be presenting m<strong>or</strong>e than<br />

10,000 items. PAN Amsterdam is renowned<br />

f<strong>or</strong> its high-quality, international <strong>of</strong>ferings <strong>of</strong><br />

paintings, furniture, maps, prints and sculptures<br />

from the 16th century <strong>to</strong> the present. The<br />

common denomina<strong>to</strong>r is that all the objects<br />

are vetted by a group <strong>of</strong> 80 experts f<strong>or</strong> authenticity,<br />

artistic quality and condition. Prices<br />

range from € 500 <strong>to</strong> € 500,000. Over 50,000<br />

visi<strong>to</strong>rs, from museum cura<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> private art<br />

enthusiasts, are attracted <strong>to</strong> this fair every<br />

St. Andrew’s Charity Ball<br />

The St. Andrew’s Society hosts a yearly charity<br />

ball in celebration <strong>of</strong> St. Andrew’s Day<br />

(the feast day <strong>of</strong> St. Andrew, the patron saint<br />

<strong>of</strong> Scotland). A highlight will be Scottish-style<br />

dancing <strong>to</strong> live music f<strong>or</strong> all abilities. Bringing<br />

a dance partner is uniquely unnecessary!<br />

The € 99 ticket includes a highland banquet,<br />

wine with dinner, many dances, a musical<br />

intermezzo and a raffle. The beneficiary<br />
