Asfar as <strong>the</strong> Department of <strong>Transport</strong> (DoT)is concerned, <strong>the</strong> <strong>2010</strong> FIFA World Cupwill have been a success if <strong>the</strong> acceleratedtransport investments secured in preparationfor <strong>2010</strong> yield a lasting legacy of qualitytransport services, infrastructure <strong>and</strong> systems.According to <strong>the</strong> DoT, it is hoped that thislegacy will be twofold: <strong>the</strong> services resultingfrom interventions made for <strong>the</strong> event itself,<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> impressions with which <strong>the</strong> remainderof <strong>the</strong> <strong>world</strong> will be left after <strong>the</strong> event.<strong>Transport</strong> services <strong>and</strong> infrastructureprovided during <strong>the</strong> FIFA World Cup must<strong>the</strong>refore meet <strong>the</strong> efficiency, safety, quality<strong>and</strong> cost-effective requirements of <strong>the</strong> modernera; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y must be accessible to all –visitors <strong>and</strong> residents alike. Since transportwill be one of <strong>the</strong> key factors upon whichvisitors will judge <strong>the</strong> success of <strong>the</strong> event,it is essential that it leaves a lasting positiveimpression on all end-users.The South African government’s overallinvestment in World Cup-related projects isestimated to have been R28 billion.
