R<strong>Anschütz</strong><strong>Maintenance</strong>-free<strong>Gyro</strong> <strong>Compass</strong> TechnologyWith <strong>Horizon</strong> <strong>MF</strong> <strong>Raytheon</strong> <strong>Anschütz</strong> presents a new gyrocompass based on strap-down technology.Strapped-down means that angular rate sensors (gyros) andaccelerometers are not gimballed but mounted stationary in ahousing. The sensors measure angular rates and accelerationsin three axes. Based on these measurements heading but alsoroll and pitch is calculated. Strap-down technology is alreadywell known and proven for many years – mainly in combinationwith fiber optical gyros (FOGs) or ring laser gyros(RLGs).<strong>Horizon</strong> <strong>MF</strong> uses so called hemispherical resonator gyros(HRGs) as angular rate sensors. This sensor technology wasdeveloped more than 20 years ago for space applications. Ithas been maturated and is now eligible and available for themaritime market.Hemispherical resonator gyros are vibrating resonator gyros. Aresonator is excited with a certain frequency which results in astationary vibration pattern. A movement of the vessel causesa shift of the vibration pattern. This shift is proportional to theangular rate and measured by pick-off electronics. The vibrationfrequency is much higher than the frequencies of the vibrationspectrum of vessels and thus not affected by the vessel.<strong>Horizon</strong> <strong>MF</strong> is maintenance free (<strong>MF</strong>).
