Honor Roll is a prestigious achievement in any school. At St. Nicholas 

School, it is an even greater accomplishment, since Middle School 

students need to earn at least a 93% for an “A” and need to maintain a 

3.6 grade point average in the core subjects of English, math, history, 

and science in order to qualify for this very special award. The following 

students earned Honor Roll for the first semester of this school year:

This years’ pep rally was definitely an exciting event! The gym 

was filled with loud screams, whistles, and clapping for their fellow 

classmates who were competing in the basketball game. The 

cheerleaders made sure to keep the crowd entertained with new hip 

cheers and cool dance moves that got everyone moving. As for our 

winners, we’d like to congratulate the blue & gold team. First place 

winners of the cheerleading contest were 4 th grade girls: Julia 

Decastro, Nicole Diamond, Natalie Muzsnai and Sophia Placencio. 

Second place went to the Kindergarten girls: Christiana Chrysiliou, 

Jana Palmer, Georgia Psihalopoulos, Kaitlyn Steinburg and 

Madison Teopaco. There was a tie for third place which went to 3 rd , 

6 th / 7 th grade girls: Brigette Anderson Nicole Collins, Kristine Daily, 

Jasmine Elkess, Marina Elkess, Marina Milicevic, Nicole Muzsnai, 

and Yakira Webb. Congratulations girls! You were all fantastic! 

We’re already getting excited for next year’s spirit day!

A Day at Disney 

I went to Disney Studios. I went 

Wednesday at 8:30 am. The second and 

third graders went. We saw a lot of 

things. 

The first thing we did was see Princess 

and the Frog. Then after the movie we 

saw all of the princesses, even princess 

Tiana. Then we went on a tour. We saw 

Minnie Mouse with someone’s brother. 

Then we saw Mickey Mouse with 

someone else. We saw the 7 dwarfs 

holding one of the buildings. All the 

children played games. 

I liked it because we got to play 

games. We all met princess Tiana. I 

would tell other kids to go because we 

had a fun time.

On December 2, 2009, the third grade 

went to Disney Studios. We left at 8:20 am. 

I went in Mrs. Andrews’s car. At Disney 

Studios we saw the movie: The Princess and 

the Frog. After that we went through a 

Disney experience. We met the princesses. 

We learned how to draw the characters. We 

saw a hat worn by Disney himself. At the 

Disney experience there were games. There 

was even an obstacle course. There was a 

cupcake restaurant. Oh, what fun! I liked the 

movie the best. If you go be sure to meet 

Princess Tiana!

I went to Disney Studios and 

it was fun. We saw a play. We 

saw the Princess and the 

Frog. We met the characters. 

We ate lunch and we played 

games. We even went on the 

Jungle gym and it was fun. 

We took a tour, which was 

cool. 

I liked the jungle gym and 

the tour. I had lots of fun! I 

will tell other people to go 

because maybe they will like 

it, too.

I went to Disney. I went 

yesterday. I drove some of my 

friends. I saw a movie called 

Princess and the Frog. We took a 

picture. We ate lunch, and I got a 

cupcake. I played leapfrog. I also 

got to know a frog. I did arts and 

crafts and did a speed course, I got 

first place. We looked at clothes 

and went in buildings. We also got 

to go on a tour. I would tell other 

kids to go because I had so much 

fun.


We are happy to announce that Mrs. Bethke and 

her husband have adopted four beautiful children! 

They are now the proud parents of one girl and three 

boys ages ten, five, two and a half and 8 months. 

Their 10 year old daughter, Janasjia and their 5 year 

old son, Dae Mario will be attending St. Nicholas in 

4 th grade and Kindergarten beginning March 1. Mrs. 

Bethke plans to stay home with the younger two 

boys, but will still be coaching after-school and 

continuing her Athletic Director duties with the St. 

Nicholas School Sports Program. 

Spelling Bees: Regional and 

Local 

For the second year in a row, sixth grader, Marika Fox, 

earned the honor of representing St. Nicholas School at 

the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by Walter 

Reed Middle School. She competed against her 6 th – 8 th 

grade classmates and won first place. Athanasios Kaplanis 

won second place and will serve as our alternate. The 

winner of the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on February 

27 will go on to the National Competition in Washington, 

D.C. At press time, we were still awaiting the results of 

the Regional Competition. We hope you win, Marika! 

Our 30 th Annual St. Nicholas School Spelling Bee will be 

held Thursday, March 4 in the Auditorium. The 4 th , 5 th , 

and 6 th grade teams will be competing. In addition, a 

spelldown round will determine the individual first, second, 

and third place winners. Good luck to all.

What is a friend? 

A friend is someone who cares 

about you, someone who plays with 

you. A friend is someone who 

entertains you. 

My best friend is Hannah and 

she is a good friend because she 

is kind and sweet. She listens to 

my problems, and she helps me. 

She has courage when I don’t have 

anything to say. 

I can be a better friend by 

praying for her. I will be there 

when she needs me and I always 

will share with her. 

All our St. Nicholas families had 

an exciting fun time at Family 

Night. The food was yummy and 

the entertainment was amazing! 

Our 3-5 th grade Greek Dancers 

were perfect, as was Marika Fox 

playing her folk songs on her flute. 

Nina and Maksym Wasylyn recited a 

poem from the Ukraine and Nikki 

Harris with daughter, Jordan Harris- 

King, sang a good old American 

song for us! We had great baskets 

for our auction, made by all our 

room moms, with the help of family 

donations. Thank you all for making 

it such a wonderful evening.

We wanted to take a moment to congratulate Alyssa and 

Nicole Deobler for performing “The Sound of Music” on Thursday, 

January 21, 2010 and Saturday, January 23 at the Madrid Theatre. 

We are so proud of them both. Good job girls! Two thumbs up!

Thank you for our Book Fairs, the fun Computer Lab, 

Library and new technology in our school. Thank you for 

P.E., which helps us to stay active. Thank you for the 

different classes we can take. Thank you for Science. 

Thank you for St. Nicholas Church and our Priests. 

Thank you for our health and the health of our teachers. 

God, forgive us for not studying very hard or not 

paying attention. We will pay attention to the teacher, 

when she is talking. Forgive us for going to Study Hall 

so many times. Forgive us for being rude and impatient 

with our friends or when we are in line. Please forgive 

us, if we were impolite or mean. We will try harder to 

be polite and forgive us for getting a bad grade on a 

test. 

Lord, grant our classmates with a long, good and 

healthy life and that we may stay active. Bless us with 

love and friendship. Grant us happiness, knowledge, 

good grades, and a smart and healthy brain. Bless us 

with kindness and love for one another. 

Lord, You are so strong. You are the Protector of us 

all, the Peacemaker, and our Creator. Lord, You are the 

blessed One. Amen.
