Family: Cucurbitaceae<br />

Native to the New World. Squash likes full<br />

sun and regular garden soil. Sow directly in<br />

the garden in the spring after the ground warms<br />

up. Make hills 3 feet apart, press the seeds into<br />

the soil, and thin to 3 best seedlings per hill. If<br />

row cropping, thin to 1 plant every 2 feet.<br />

Once the plants are up, weed around them and<br />

apply compost. Do not overwater the plants—<br />

let them go a bit dry between waterings.<br />
