A Time for RenewalThis term has seen a lot happen in a short period oftime. We have recently announced that Narelle will bethe new MECS Principal and as a school, we couldn’tbe happier. We have been through a round of parent/teacher interviews and we are finishing with thePrimary concert (a mammoth effort by staff, studentsand no doubt parent help also). Throw in for goodmeasure the Centre Trip that left Sunday morning, MSSpecial week, visiting students from Japan, excursionsand sports days, and you can be reminded that MECSis a vibrant and busy place. It’s been a diffi cult term for colds and fl us. There have beensignifi cant health concerns for families and staff, whichremind us that in our fast paced, action based lives, there is aneed to take a break, slow down and rest.As our Creator, Godunderstands our limitations. He knows that our need forrest is fundamental to notonly our physical and mentalwellbeing, but also our spiritualwellbeing. His commandmentto have a day of rest allowsPage 2Thursday 19 15 September December 2013 2011Mount Evelyn Christian School NewsPaulMECS Principalus to reconnect with Him, to communicate and hear his still, quiet voice. As you and your family take time out, possibly travelling, pursuing other adventures in exploring His creation, or inother ways of recharging, remember that God’s desire is tobe with us in a covenant relationship. May your time with Himover the holidays be a time of renewal and blessing as youseek the peace/shalom that God alone can bring. I know I will!Peace, love and safety to you all over the break this term.Celebrating40Years1973-2013Reflections1999 - Staff - Student Football MatchThe origin of the fi rst MECS staff-student football matches, likethe origin of Aussie Rules itself, is shrouded in mystery. No onereally seems to know when the fi rst game actually took place. However, they were certainly being played in the early 90’s and‘‘the last game was held in 1999. Whenwe did play them, the fi rst few gameswere male only affairs and the staffteam had some great players: thechicken-legged Bob (9 AFL gameswith Collingwood), the terrier-like roverAllan (his dad played AFL Reserveswith Collingwood), the man-mountainGeoff (natural athlete from Boort) andthe Adonis Stuart (a gifted sportsman.)Even though I played in every game,I would not have been considered agreat player, having migrated from SriLanka, where we might have asked thequestion, “Aussie rules-what are therules?”However, not all migrants experienced the same level of diffi culty. In 1996, Dr James (Jimmy) worked here for a term replacingGeoff who was on longservice leave. He waspicked to play in thegame and the cannyCroatian-Americanended up masteringthe mysteries of theoval shaped ball (hisPhysics background??)and kicked a lazy bag ofsix goals. I think we, thestaff, won that game.I would not have beenconsidered a great player, having migrated from SriLanka, where we mighthave asked the question,“Aussie rules-what arethe rules?”In an earlier game weplaced the ageing Colin at full forward where he towered over thestudent fullback but alas his lack of mobility and the paucity ofprecise ball delivery meant that Colin did not snag a fewthat day. In the first game that Geoff played, I recall amoment where my life flashed before my eyes: I wasbent low trying desperately to gather the ball whenGeoff, trying to protect me by laying a ‘shepherd’ onmy opponent missed and I found myself facing hisrather large and formidable derriere moving rapidlytowards me. How I got out of this I do not know but the imagestill haunts me to this day. Finally, because this is a game of some passion, there weremoments of sinful human behavior even on the sacred MECSoval. In the fi rst 15 seconds of a game, Bob had tapped the ball tome, it found my boot and went sailingthrough the goal. I had just begun my‘‘celebration when Danny (Year 11)thudded into me with a bone-crunchinglate tackle designed to remind me thatevery future kick would have to beearned. Amidst the following outcryand boos, Danny not only had todeal with his dad but also Colin ‘theenforcer’ Smith who reminded him thathe was on notice. However, there were also manymoments of grace and redemption onthe sacred turf. Probably the greatestwas in our last ever game in 1999when the ageing staff team was beingsoundly beaten. Colin S’s son Ben and my son Ross joined thestaff team for the second half and we began to win. Ross tooka mark at centre-half forward and while he could easily havekicked the winning goal chose to pass the ball to his dad whowas loose in the goal square. Not only did I drop the mark, butin the ensuing scramble, I missed the goals from directly in frontand kicked a point. So why don’t we play any more you ask? Well, curiously, the staffteam aged while the students all seemed toremain the same age. Also, we got injured. We suffered cracked ribs (Russell/Rusty),hamstring strains, bruised muscles and egosso fi nally Stewart the principal said “No more”.Dr Roger, SS TeacherCelebrating 40 Years

Positive Boys Billycart RacesWhat a privilege it has been to see our Year6 boys working in teams building and racingbillycarts! Our Positive Boys program has been areal highlight for everyone involved this term. It issomething that the students have looked forwardto each Friday leading up to the all importantrace day.Throughout this term we have spent time onFriday afternoons not only building our billycarts, but also in challenging ourselves to think aboutwho we are and where we fi t into God’s world asbudding young men. We started the term with ateam building day at the Oasis camp in MountEvelyn and had Pastor Liam come in and speakto us the following week.Friday saw the fi nale to our great term’s workwith the Billycart Race. The big race includedeach driver navigating their way through twolaps of the lower half of the primary school andthen a time trial to fi nish off. We started by havinga wheel fall off one cart, bearings falling out ofnumerous others and to top it all off, a nut cameadrift from the front axle of another. By the endwe had over 20 boys who gave the race theirall and had an absolute blast, with some boysasking if each Friday we could have anotherrace. We had a couple of carts spin out, anotherhit a pole but we praise God for blessing us witha great day and no serious injuries.I have really enjoyed working on this projectand in the Positive Boys program this term; weshould all be really proud of these young menand what they have achieved individually and asa team. Don’t forget, Dads - the Bloke’s Night ishappening on Wednesday 16 October at 7.30pm,where you will get to see and share in some theexcitement from our race.BenPositive Boys CoordinatorAssociationAssociation For Christian EducationEGMExtra General MeetingPage 3Thursday 19 15 September December 2011 2013Mount Evelyn Christian School NewsTomas, Jordan, Alastair & Jack Michael & Haydn Josh & PatrickZachary & BenKindergarten VisitorThe Possum and Koala children have been learning about Our Country, Australia.Last week Eva Jo came to talk with us about Aboriginal culture, weapons suchas spears and boomerangs, the fl ags, art, music and dance. Each student was given arole to play within a family. Researchingspecifi c information about this time in historyenabled the family groups to create two timecapsules representing their family’s life. Onetook a snapshot of family life pre-industrialRevolution and the other during this period. Each time capsule contained a letter fromeach family member and a number ofitems of signifi cance to them. Fairytale HighLadies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Get ready for the show of a lifetimebrought to you by the Year 8, 9 and 10 Performing Arts students of 2013! Full oflaughter, fun and fairy tales, this show is not to be missed. Over the last coupleof terms, the theatrette has been battered and bruised (fi guratively speakingof course!) by a group of performers seeking to entertain! Through all of theblood, sweat and tears, we have been working to put together a wonderful lightheartedshow that will keep you laughing all the way through.Fairytale High is the story of a high school fi lled with characters you mayalready have heard of, but never like this. Ever imagined that there could be aromance between Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk) and Goldilocks?Or that a wicked queen might double up as a school counsellor competingagainst Snow White, the Home Economics teacher, for the title of Teacher ofthe Year? Or that little Pinocchio could go from a lying wannabe to teen heartthrob?Well come join us at the performance and you’ll see all of this and more!MECS Theatrette, 7.30 pm Thursday 14 November.Admission $5, $3 concession.Alyssa & ShannanPage 7Thursday 19 September 2013Mount Evelyn Christian School NewsEmily, Charlotte & SavannahGrayson & FaithDaniel, Brenton & BaileyMECS TOURS[Student’s Name]Postby Thur 19SeptemberC/- Alice Springs Post OfficeNT 0870OfficeCentral Australia Trip Year 10Day 1 Sunday 15 SeptemberDay 2 Monday 16 SeptemberDay 3 Tuesday 17 SeptemberDay 4 Wednesday 18 SeptemberDay 5 Thursday 19 SeptemberDay 6 Friday 20 SeptemberDay 7 Saturday 21 SeptemberDay 8 Sunday 22 SeptemberDay 9 Monday 23 SeptemberDay 10 Tuesday 24 SeptemberDay 11 Wednesday 25 SeptemberDay 12 Thursday 26 SeptemberDay 13 Friday 27 SeptemberDay 14 Saturday 28 SeptemberDay 15 Sunday 29 SeptemberDay 16 Monday 30 SeptemberDay 17 Tuesday 1 OctoberDay 18 Wednesday 2 OctoberMelbourne to Adelaide (790 kms)Adelaide to Glendambo (588 kms)Glendambo to Victory Downs Bush Camp (644 kms)Victory Downs to Alice Springs (295 kms)Alice Springs to Tilmouth Well (187 kms)Tilmouth Well to Yuendumu (111 kms)YuendumuYuendumuYuendumu to Alice Springs (298 kms)Alice Springs to Bush Camp (420 kms)Bush Camp to Kings Creek (30 kms)Kings Creek to Uluru (297 km)Uluru - Last Day pick up letters at UluruUluru to Bush Camp (448 kms)Bush Camp to Coober Pedy (304 kms)Coober Pedy to Bush Camp past Woomera (480km)Bush Camp to Murray Bridge (441 kms)Celebrating 40 YearsMurray Bridge to Melbourne (790 kms) Arrive 7pmMECS TOURS[Student’s Name]C/- Yulara Post OfficeNT 0872Postby Mon 23SeptemberPostman Patawaits...Make sure you write to yourloved one in Central Australia. We strongly recommend thatall parents write (early in thetrip) to their son or daughter, asthis will really help to stave offany homesickness they mightbe experiencing.
