FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND BOARD CHAIRThis annual report is an important snapshot of Astraea’s workand that of our grantee and donor partners. It chroniclesour 30th Anniversary year—a busy and accomplished onein which we awarded more than $2.2 million to 198 organizationsand 21 individuals in 120 cities and towns and 47countries around the world. We recognize that change does notcome quickly, or without human and financial costs. It’s one ofthe reasons that our extensive grants program includes multiyeargrants designed to support vital organizations working tokeep our community strong and secure over the long haul.Astraea Lesbian Foundation for JusticeDuring President Obama’s historic campaign, Americans weremoved to new heights of activism. Those with little money ortime gave both. People used vacation days to knock on doorsin swing states. They used cell-phone minutes to phone-bank.And they waited on line for hours to vote.It was a welcome and exhilarating sight. At Astraea we witnessthis kind of passion for justice every day.Right now Astraea grantees are fighting for LGBTI and humanrights in democratic countries as well as in some of the mostoppressive regimes on the planet. They are creating communityfor queer people living in isolation and fear. They aregiving voice to survivors of abuse and harassment through artand culture. Although separated by language and continents, these activists share the same goal of creating a world freefrom racism, sexism, homophobia and gender oppression. Wemarvel at their heroism and smart strategies. In Nicaragua, activists providing shelter for women fleeingfamily abuse because of their sexual orientation helped decriminalizehomosexuality. In Oregon, organizers creating schooland neighborhood Hate-Free Zones educated and mobilizedstudents to fight for queer rights. In Brazil, activists running an arts and culture project for Blacklesbians launched the country’s first national lesbian short storyand essay contest. And in New York, activists created an audiodocumentary series featuring the stories and struggles of LGBTIpeople from the African continent. We wish that those of you who see Astraea at work in yourown communities could see the same groundbreaking workacross the entire U.S. and the globe. This year, among the 289grants issued, we funded:• the only LGBTI center in Mauritius• the first transgender center in Bolivia• the only Black theater company in Kentucky• Hungary’s only organization for lesbianand bisexual women• the first lesbian organization in Shanghai• the first-ever community center for lesbiansand lesbigay youth of African descent in Illinois2 Alice Y. MISSIONDespite our collective accomplishments, our work is far fromcomplete. Still, in staggering numbers, LGBTI people are deniedbasic rights. Still, we are beaten and murdered. And the elationthat so many in our community felt after helping to elect thefirst African American President of the United States turnedbittersweet when California revoked the constitutional rights ofqueer people to marry, and Arkansas voted to ban unmarriedpeople from adopting.Such reprehensible laws and violence serve as constant remindersthat we must stay focused and buoyant. We must stay strong andmobilized.Astraea is the world’s only foundation solely dedicated to supportingLGBTI organizations in the U.S. and internationally. Thiscoming year, we will issue more than $2.4 million in grants. Wewill complete an exciting, ambitious five-year strategic plan. Andwe will continue to collaborate with colleagues and grantee anddonor partners to ensure the day when all of us will live freely, safely and with dignity. The election of President Obama was History in the Making. This annual report is brimming with Justice in the Making.
