Advanced Placement. Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide college experience to studentswhile they are still high school students. AP programs are offered in each major academic area.Post-secondary credit for an AP course shall be awarded to students who score at least a 3 on a 5-point scale on the corresponding AP exam.International Baccalaureate/Advanced International Certificate of Education/InternationalStudies. The International Baccalaureate (IB), the Advanced International Certificate of Education(AICE), and the International Studies (IS) programs are offered in several schools for which eligiblehigh school students earn credit toward graduation and may receive post-secondary credit atcolleges and universities.Career Education. Any career education course authorized for grade 13 or higher may be takenfor credit by students in grades 9-12, based on the career objectives of the students.Florida Virtual School. Middle and senior high school students are eligible to enroll in the FloridaVirtual School. The courses offered are teacher-facilitated and available throughout the state.Courses are based upon the same criteria as those taught in the standard high school programand, therefore, generate the same credit for students. Middle school students may earn credit onlyin those courses designated as "acceleration" courses as indicated above. Secondary students arealso eligible to enroll in courses offered through <strong>Miami</strong>-<strong>Dade</strong> Virtual School. Credit by examination is a method by which post-secondary credit isearned based on the receipt of a specified minimum score on a nationally standardized general orsubject area examination.Students may obtain more information about any of these opportunities for acceleration from theirschool guidance counselors.- 22 -
