The effects of environmental contaminants needfurther studyA variety of human−made chemical contaminants can be foundin very remote locations including park ecosystems. Althoughairborne toxins <strong>and</strong> pollutants are deposited across the region,deposition rates are generally higher in mountainous terrain,increasing the burden of this pollution on <strong>Shen<strong>and</strong>oah</strong> <strong>National</strong><strong>Park</strong>. Monitoring has yielded some information about howmercury, a toxic heavy metal that especially affects aquatic life,impacts the watersheds within the park. 22 Toxic pollutantsmay also have an effect beyond park boundaries when they aretransported by rivers flowing through the park into parks in theadjoining NPS <strong>National</strong> Capital Region <strong>and</strong> ultimately into theChesapeake Bay. The park staff need to learn much more aboutwhich harmful contaminants are present in the park <strong>and</strong> thepossible threats they pose to park natural resources, which mayin turn lead to a need for exp<strong>and</strong>ed monitoring activities.Air quality issues require complex monitoringTo underst<strong>and</strong> the complex <strong>and</strong> serious impacts from airpollutants, the NPS has implemented a sophisticated monitoringprogram, often carried out in concert with other federal <strong>and</strong> stateagencies <strong>and</strong> organizations. This program tracks the vital signsUSGS, NPSDifferences in visibility from a park vista on a typical “good” summervisibility day versus a poor summer visibility day. Contaminant accumulation <strong>and</strong> haze, a result ofparticulates <strong>and</strong> water molecules in the atmosphere, reduce visibility from park vistas, change soil chemistry, <strong>and</strong> damage plants.9
