<strong>2005</strong>/20<strong>06</strong> ANNUAL REPORTReserve ServicesA number of new reserve services have been introduced. Print articles requested for Reserve are now alsosearched online; for nine per cent of a total of 3,521 articles, a link was provided to the online version as well.Online Reserve Request forms, made available July <strong>2005</strong>, are being very well received. An Exam Bank Repositorywill be available June 20<strong>06</strong> for interested faculty. Courseware Packages will be placed on Reserve effectiveSummer 20<strong>06</strong> at the request of the course instructor. Finally, as of Summer 20<strong>06</strong>, a new Business Competitioncollection, consisting of approximately 100 case studies referenced by students in the annual BusinessCompetitions, will be added to the Reserve collection on a permanent basis.<strong>University</strong> Outreach“The <strong>Library</strong> at <strong>Simon</strong> <strong>Fraser</strong> <strong>University</strong> hasbeen quite successful in developing anoutreach program to the entire <strong>University</strong>community. The efforts of the library liaisonto the Faculty of Business Administration areparticularly noteworthy. Many students arefamiliar with this person due to such actionsas weekly e-mail newsletter and occasionalsessions during which he sets up a table inthe Faculty of Business Administrationbuilding to meet with anyone strolling downthe hallway. As a result, library usageamong students is heavy and particularlyeffective.“ (One of four highlighted"strengths and effective practices" cited inthe acceptance letter from the AACSBaccreditation team.)Public services staff on all three campuses continue to contributeto a wide range of outreach activities on and off campus to informthe wider community about the services, resources and programsaccessible through the <strong>Library</strong>. In <strong>2005</strong>/<strong>06</strong> these included:• Benefits and Services Fair for new faculty .• Week of Welcome orientation in September <strong>2005</strong>.• Alumni Day Open House in October <strong>2005</strong>.• Burnaby Public <strong>Library</strong> visit in November <strong>2005</strong>.• Learning and Instructional Development Centre’s Symposium onInnovative Teaching.• Teaching Assistant/Tutor Marker Day.• Tutor Marker Orientations.• Student Services Fair for new and transfer students at thebeginning of each semester.• Tours for <strong>Library</strong> visitors.Student Learning CommonsIn May <strong>2005</strong> Vice-President Academic John Waterhouse announced that “<strong>SFU</strong> will establish an academic learningcentre, connected to, and in support of, the ongoing curriculum project. The Learning Commons has a mandate toassist and support students in their academic pursuits and to provide learning support services across the 3 <strong>SFU</strong>campuses. The <strong>SFU</strong> Learning Commons will open officially in September 20<strong>06</strong> in the WAC Bennett <strong>Library</strong>, andeventually in other <strong>SFU</strong> <strong>Library</strong> sites.” One year later, with much behind-the-scenes work, we are on track for theSeptember 20<strong>06</strong> opening.Building on the existing services of the Alumni Information Commons and the HCC Learning Skills program, theStudent Learning Commons (SLC) will offer a wide range of academic assistance to undergraduate and graduatestudents, including academic writing, learning strategies, library research, computer technology, English languageskills, theses formatting advice and more. Over fifteen peer educators will receive specialized writing and learningsupport training for Fall 20<strong>06</strong>.7
