ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM ST COLUMBA ANGLICAN SCHOOL PORT MACQUARIE
From the Principal
hope/hōp/
In a society where the word “news” is most often equated with “bad” news, is it any wonder that our young people are prone to only seeing a
“dark” future for themselves and their world.
Not that this is a new phenomenon. I have a friend who grew up in Europe during the 60’s who believed that nuclear war was inevitable and
that he would never survive to adulthood. I have another friend who grew up Catholic in Northern Ireland and was made very aware that he
would never be able to work in any but the most menial job in his hometown and violence was a byword in his world (he collected spent
rubber bullets, bomb fragments and other paraphernalia the way other children collected coins or stamps).
Both these men came to Australia when they realised that in doing that they could hope for a better life for themselves and their families.
And that is what they found here – Hope.
So what do we do, when there seems to be an increasing tendency in our society to “deal with ideological conflict with tribalism and idiocy”
and follow the “We’ll all be rooned” philosophy of Hanrahan?
As a school we can create a culture where hope not only survives, but thrives. In doing this I do not believe we need to delve into “pixie-dust”
optimism, but create structures and models that show our students that there is a place in the real world for positive expectations.
I believe we can do this by:
Making learning a personal experience that acknowledges individual talents
 Promoting (insisting on) positive relationships
 Showing mindfulness in our planning
Making sure that words and actions are in accord
 Promoting orderliness rather than chaos
Teaching in a way that increases resilience in the face of adversity
Good schools provide answers to life questions. Answers that are difficult to find at the back of the textbook. Answers to questions like:
How am I going to survive in a world that can be hyper-competitive, inequitable and dangerous?
How will I find and maintain relationships that are positive, supportive and that respect the concept of mutual obligation?
Where do I fit in a world that is often confusing and seems to be always changing the answers before I even understand the question?
These are the things that sneak in between the lines in a great classroom - things that are difficult to find in the syllabus and even harder to
test in an examination. These are the things that we strive to include (value-adding) in a St Columba education.
How important do I believe this is? I concur with the late John Gardiner who wrote that “The first and last task of a leader is to keep hope
alive”.
So let us mail our colours to the mast. Let us strive that somewhere in the busy school days ahead we find time to offer our community a
sense of:
Hope for liberty (to think, act and live with responsible choice)
Hope for equality (finding ways of acting so that it does not just look through the prism of winners and losers)
Hope for efficiency (getting rid of wasteful habits, paradigms and systems that take up too much of our resources in terms
of time, money and emotion)
Hope for Community (that it is possible to share the “good life” with others, even when our ideas and backgrounds differ)
Optimistic? I hope so!
Noun: A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen
Verb: Want something to happen or be the case: "he's hoping for compensation"; "I
hope that the kids are OK".
Synonyms: noun. expectation - expectancy - expectance - trust - promise
verb. trust - expect – anticipate
“Our spirits were made for hope, the way our hearts were made to love and our brains were made
to think and our hands were made to do things”. Lewis Benedictus Smedes
Disability Provisions for HSC
Many parent will be aware that the Board of Studies grant disability provision for students with a physical or psychological disability
which may disadvantage them in examination situations. The range of conditions which may be considered is extensive,
but examples would include such things as
• Diabetes, where the student may need to eat regularly, to visit the toilet frequently or to test blood sugar levels
• Dyslexia, where an examination paper printed on a particular coloured paper may assist
• Chronic fatigue, where rest breaks may be required
• Chronically bad hand writing, where use of a writer may assist
• Panic attacks, where environmental changes and access to medication may help.
Applications to the Board of Studies for appropriate provisions for particular conditions require substantial documentation as
evidence, and considerable input from the School. Once submitted, they are reviewed and determined by an expert panel engaged
by the respective authority. Hence, the process must begin early, so that the authority has the time to deal properly with
the many thousands of applications which are received each year.
HSC students in Year 12 at SCAS, who had disability provisions approved for the former School Certificate, should note that they
must make a new application for the Higher School Certificate.
Applications for disability provisions for the 2012 HSC examinations must reach the Board of Studies by Thursday 5 April. Students
who wish to make applications should thus begin the process immediately if they have not already done so. A great deal
of evidence is required, both from appropriate professionals, and from within the School, all of which takes a good deal of time
to garner. Details of how to apply and what is required may be obtained from Mr Philpott in the Learning Support Department
(6581 4188).Parents or students who need assistance with the process should contact me in the first instance. I do hasten to
point out that, when conditions develop or are identified after 5th April, the Board is very accommodating in dealing with late
applications, even up until the morning of the exam! For students with known conditions, however, it is important that they
realise that they may disadvantage themselves if they do not allow the Board sufficient time to deal properly with their application.
It is important that parents and students realise that the granting of a provision for NAPLAN does not pre-empt any decision
which may later be made by the Board of Studies.
Students competed in the Secondary School Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 14 th February. The
you to all secondary staff and parent volunteers who assisted in various jobs on the day. It was
great to see all students embrace the carnival both in and out of the pool. The SCAS Swimming
Mid Coast Independent Trade
Training Centre
Welcome to MCITTC 2012
The HSC Hospitality and Construction students are among
the first to access the Mid Coast Independent Trade Training
Centre. There was a wonderful sense of enthusiasm and
excitement amongst the students who started last week
and all enjoyed a shared meal in the new outdoor area
prepared by the Hospitality students.
The Hospitality Teacher is Mrs Wendy McKinlay. Wendy has
significant industry experience and has taught at TAFE for
several years. She is very enthusiastic to share her skills with
the students in this brand new and well equipped facility.
The Construction Teacher is Mr Justin Munro who has worked as a ‘chippy’ up until he completed his teaching degree recently
and is really looking forward to working with students to develop skills and construction knowledge.
Our students who complete the course for 2 years may get a ‘dual qualification’ – a completed HSC subject and a VET Certificate
II.
With the road works now complete, parents collecting MCITTC students on Thursday evenings may drive in through the bus
entry and down past the Iona Centre into the MCITTC car park. Exit will then be through the usual SCAS exit gate.
If you would like a tour of the MCITTC please do not hesitate to contact Julie Robinson on 65814188 ext. 737 or send an email to
training@mcittc.nsw.edu.au (for working families Mrs Robinson will be at the Centre each Thursday evening until 7.30pm).
There is one place left in the Hospitality Class, and limited places remain in Construction for Year 10 and Year 11 students.
shirts, and the rear waist of shorts and skirts. Families who purchase second hand items of clothing are asked
to replace the name of the previous owner with the name of their child. Many new items of clothing have
no name on them and it is difficult for them to be returned to their rightful owner.
Trinity is a contemporary, Bible-based church which commenced in 2008. We meet at St Columba School
and while we have people of all ages, we particularly seek to include children and youth. We seek to be a
praying, warm and authentic community where people are included, supported, challenged and transformed,
through the word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Trinity meets at 10.00am each Sunday in the SCAS Chapel.
