ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM ST COLUMBA ANGLICAN SCHOOL PORT MACQUARIE
From the Principal
Looking at Changes and Development @SCAS
The Senior Studies Centre
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are
the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Barack Obama
Before and After: This is a photo of a happy man!
In 2011, Allan Guihot will have his Senior Studies Centre.
For him, after nearly four years of planning, drawing, making
submissions, he can now look out on the building that
will be named the Hopkins Building, but generally dubbed
the Senior Studies Centre.
The Centre will incorporate teaching areas, performance
areas, study zones, offices and a “real” common room for
Year 12 (no more small rooms, co-opted classrooms or
temporary residence in the Iona Weights Room).
As a young school it was necessary to share facilities and grounds. As a school of five years, specific areas were
allocated to the different groups in the school. As we move towards our tenth year, the time has come to
acknowledge the particular needs (academic and social) of our senior students by giving them a building and a precinct
that is not only designed for their use but also for their particular needs.
This is another step in the evolutionary process of SCAS. It shows that we are a school that takes its academic results
seriously and is willing to make available the resources necessary to support our senior students in their last
years of Secondary Education. Now our seniors will have the opportunity to be leaders of a K-12 community, while
having a space acknowledging their seniority.
We have achieved consistently spectacular academic results in our short Higher School Certificate history. This
facility will ensure our students have the resources to show that these results were no “flash in the pan”.
The SSC is due to be ready for use in Term IV, meaning the current Year 11 cohort will have use of it as they begin
their Higher School Certificate year.
“All of the top achievers I know are life-long learners... Looking for new skills, insights, and ideas. If
they're not learning, they're not growing... not moving toward excellence.” Denis Waitley
TOP TEN TIPS FOR YEAR 12 STUDENTS
1. Celebrate past successes and milestones and be proud of making it to your final year - this will help
you to remain enthusiastic and work hard to achieve all that you can.
2. Develop a routine - this will help you stay organised and in control and encourage you to develop
good patterns of behaviour early.
3. Maintain a healthy balanced diet as early in the year as possible and set aside time for physical exercise
and relaxation.
4. Establish a weekly timetable for each school term. Factor in casual/part-time work commitments,
leisure, family time and sleep.
5. Aim to wake up at the same time every morning this will allow you to get the most out of your study
time earlier in the day.
6. Avoid "all nighters" - remember that a late night on a Saturday will impact severely on your capacity
to study early on Sunday. You will learn more effectively when you're not exhausted.
7. Set short term goals. This will keep you motivated and help you to measure your progress.
8. Reward yourself safely. Don't overdo the partying and drinking. Congratulate yourself on how far
you've come.
9. Remind yourself continually throughout the year how close you are to the end.
10. Have fun - if you are enjoying something your brain will want to remember the experience.
HRIS Netball
A glorious day of Netball was enjoyed this year by
three strong teams from St Columba at the HRIS
Carnival in Newcastle in late June. Our Junior
Team placed 8 th, Intermediate 12 th and Seniors 3 rd
overall—our best performance to date. Lots of
whispers were overheard from the big Newcastle
schools commenting on the high degree of skill displayed
from our girls, some of whom had precious
little experience in representative Netball.
Many thanks goes to Sheila Bruhn for her tireless
coaching, managing and help on the day, as well as
Ms Dagger and Mrs Cutler for coaching and refereeing
on the day. Best and fairest awards will be
presented on the Sports Presentation Night later
in the year.
Thanks to all the girls- you were a pleasure to take
away- as always.
SPORTS NEWS
Coffs Coast Rugby Challenge
The Year 6 SCAS Rugby team represented
Port Macquarie in the recent school holidays
at Coffs Harbour for three days. The
boys gave it their all and were model students.
Cooper Reichelt gained the spirit of
rugby award. Richard and Dolly Bligh-
Jones must be thanked for all their efforts
over the three days event.
Last week one of our Year 7/8 Basketball
teams won the Grand Final of the local Port
Macquarie Basketball Competition. This
game was held over from the previous term
and the boys won the game 39 – 27.
Team members Joel Bricknell, Thomas
Goodfellow, Joshua Chambers, Calum
McArthur, Brendan Sampson, Andrew
McDonald, Nick Jones, Bryce Kennedy and
Jack McGee(injured) performed brilliantly.
Their coach, Ian Sampson, was very pleased
with the boys’ efforts over the whole competition.
HRIS Boys’ Open Soccer
Congratulations to our HRIS Boys’ Open Soccer
team for their huge effort this week. The final
placing of fifth out of twelve teams doesn’t really
tell the story of the day – the boys played so well,
gave every ounce of effort they had, and were excellent
ambassadors for our School. After the preliminary
rounds the boys placed equal second in
their pool, but were relegated to playing for fifth
place on goal difference We finished the day with
a record of 4 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss - probably the
second best record of all teams on the day.
U14 Boys and U13 Boys won the North Coast Futsal Gala Day yesterday. They played teams from
Bellingen, Melville, Camden Haven, Bishop Druitt in Coffs Harbour and Wauchope. They will now progress
to the Australasian championships which will be held in November. This is a fantastic achievement for our
boys! The teams consisted of:
U14’s Aaron Oppedisano, Lachlan Hill, Paul Galloway, Joshua Chambers, Brendan
Sampson, Eli Blue and Michael Snow
U13’s Angus Guihot, Adam Matthews, Jed Morrison, Andrew Aristides, Chris Camarda,
Liam Rine, Sam Killick (sick Oscar Anderson, Rayahn Raschke and Alex Kroon)
The U15 and U14 girls also participated in the Gala Day and the U15 girls were runners up on the day. This
second place ensured that they would also progress to the Australasian Championships with the boys. The
U14 Girls were placed 3 rd. These girls have also been invited to the Australasian Championships as there was
a vacancy in the draw because of the earthquake in New Zealand. The team members are:
U15 Abbey Hannan, Jessica Gray, Alexandra Sanna, Lainey Harrison, Sarah Harrison and
Roxanne Montgomery
U14 Madeleine Sanna, Pheobe Lavers, Georga Goldsmith, Aneeka Brownsberger, Rachel
Worcester, Olivia Seller, Samantha Coppin and Aysha Khodary
Mr Kallmier and Mrs Sampson filled the (rather large) shoes of Mr Hurst as coaches, as Mr Hurst had to
take the girls to the Open HRIS Gala on the same day.
EDMODO—Year 2, Year 4 and Year 9
What is a blog? Blog is short for web log. A blog is like an online journal where you can record thoughts for others to read.
This term Year 2 and Year 4 are using www.edmodo.com to create a blog during computer lessons. Edmodo is an educational blogging
site that is secure and can only be accessed by people who have the correct group code. Only students from St Columba can access
your child’s blog at any time. Students in 2M, 2F and Year 4 have been given a user name and password. This will allow them to access
the blog from school and at home. Last term during computer appropriate online behaviour and private and public information was
discussed in preparation for this unit of work.
Inappropriate language and behaviour will not be tolerated online, after one warning profiles will be disabled for a period of time.
Class teachers and Mrs Ebbs will be monitoring comments and behaviour.
The Year 2 blog will focus on Community Helpers. Year 9 may be buddied up with a Year 9 student who will comment on their writing
to encourage them with their blogs. Year 4 will focus on Electricity.
I encourage you to sit with your children and learn with them about blogging. If you observe any inappropriate behaviour please con-
tact your class teacher or Mrs Ebbs in the Library. If you have any questions or would like to offer assistance as a computer helper,
please contact Mrs Ebbs on Tuesday and Thursday in the School Library.
CAREERS EXPO
Year 12 students attended The Port Macquarie Camden Haven
Careers Expo at Camden Haven High School last Thursday. The
students gathered valuable career and study information from the
day.
A broad range of universities, TAFE, private colleges, training organisations
and defence force representatives took part in the Expo.
The event is designed to help students plan their post-school education
and careers.
Students were very enthusiastic about what they had seen and
heard on the day. School Captain Laura Smith commented that the
Expo really helped to cement her knowledge of career options and
reinforced her future direction.
and identified attributes including
geographic reasons why Port
Macquarie was established.
Students enjoyed the excursion and
MID COAST INDEPENDENT TRADE TRAINING CENTRE
The building of the Mid Coast Independent Trade Training Centre is now well underway. TAFE have been appointed to deliver the
trade courses to the students enrolled at the Centre. So what does having a Trade Training Centre at SCAS mean?
MCITTC is about offering choices to our senior students. Not all students are after or are suited to an academic based HSC in
readiness for University studies; some students just want to move straight into a trade based career. They will now have the
option to do a trade while completing their HSC here at SCAS rather than move to TAFE or another school.
MCITTC students will be based at the Centre and will do a trade subject, work preparation studies and other HSC subjects at the
Centre. Students will enjoy their own facilities and classroom spaces. Students will also complete work placement. MCITTC aims
to have its well-trained students ready for the work place, so they are valuable employees of the future. Students at MCITTC
will do a non-ATAR HSC and will work towards a trade qualification.
SCAS students will have access to new state of the art facilities for their Design and Technology classes with the MCITTC housing
a new Food Technology room, an e-learning room and large construction workshops. SCAS families will also enjoy the new
facilities with a new meeting area in the function room.
While the MCITTC will virtually operate as a separate entity on the School campus, SCAS students may be able to access courses
in Year 9 and 10 such as Hospitality, Construction and Electrotechnology. These may be delivered as electives by trained SCAS
teachers. In the future, students studying in the normal academic stream may choose to complement their HSC studies with
work based studies through the Centre. Students choosing one VET course as part of their HSC studies will still be eligible for an
ATAR.
MCITTC has started offering ‘value adding’ skill based courses to make it easier for students to obtain part-time work. In the
recent holidays we held Responsible Service of Alcohol, Responsible Conduct of Gambling and First Aid. More courses will be
offered in the October break. SCAS will be offering these in partnership with a variety of Registered Training Organisations and
their sole aim is to develop skills.
The SCAS community will be offered short courses over the coming months. We are looking at holding cooking classes, chef’s
table functions, first aid and computer skills.
An Information Evening for students interested in enrolling in the Trade Training Centre will be held on Wednesday 17 th August at
7.00pm in the SCAS Chapel.
UPCOMING SHORT COURSES:
26 th and 27 th September—Barista Course at the TAFE Coffee classroom.
Students will qualify for a Statement of Attainment. $220.00 per student.
Places are limited.
October holidays - OH&S General Induction White Card Course. $100 per
student.
Late November—Bar Service Course – participants must be over 18.
This 3 day course will be held at the TAFE Bar.
Staff Profile - Visual Arts Teacher
Ms Stephanie Pattinson GradDipEd (Secondary) BFineArts (Sculpture, Ceramics)
Stephanie Pattinson has returned to the Hastings District after a
twelve year stint away from home. Her interests in the arts have been
fuelled with a Degree in Fine Arts, some fairly extensive overseas travel
visiting many of the artworks that she had learned about in books,
and later teaching in Sydney alongside some inspirational artists and
colleagues. Her employment as the Assistant Director of a Commercial
Art Gallery in Paddington assisted her information gathering and experiences.
Since returning to Port Macquarie she has stayed a season on the very
treasured Lord Howe Island, worked in a number of Secondary High
Schools throughout the district, begun to further her professional development
by way of a Masters Degree in Teaching, and also found
employment within a local architectural office.
Now she has landed at SCAS, intent on honing her life’s practice and
directing this at the Visual Arts Department to her fullest capacity.
Stephanie is interested in supporting the creativity of students as an
integral part of their great journey. Little do her students know that
her own direction was set sail via some very similar encouragement
from her own high school arts teacher just years ago.
CHANGES TO FIRST AID IN 2012
From 2012 there will be changes to the provision of First Aid at St Columba Anglican School. Currently the First Aid
Room provides first aid for staff, students and visitors, and we have been fortunate to have had the services of a
Registered Nurse, Mrs Julie Robinson, in the First Aid Room. At the beginning of 2012 Mrs Robinson will take up a
new position within the School, which will necessitate some changes to first aid at SCAS.
The First Aid Room is set up to provide first aid to students in the case of accidents, injuries incurred at school, or
minor ailments. From 2012, students who are feeling unwell or have sustained an injury at school will continue to
report to the First Aid Room. The First Aid Room will be staffed by administration staff with first aid training. All staff
at St Columba, both administration and teaching staff, have up-to-date first aid training, which includes a Senior First
Aid Certificate and CPR and Anaphylaxis training. All staff undergo refresher courses in first aid as required to ensure
their skills are current.
Students with minor ailments will be attended to and returned to class. In more serious cases, or where it is clear that
the student will not be able to return to class, parents will be contacted by a staff member to arrange further
treatment or transport home. It is important that parents do not send students to school who are feeling unwell, as
the school does not have the staffing to enable us to look after students who need to be kept in the first aid room for
any length of time. Parents of students who are not well enough to attend classes will be contacted to collect their
child from school. In the case of a serious injury or illness, an ambulance will be called and parents contacted immediately.
Mrs Robinson will still be on the school site next year, and available for advice on health and medical matters.
If you have any concerns regarding the proposed changes to first aid at SCAS, please contact us either by email,
secretary@scas.nsw.edu.au, or by phone on 6581 4188, and we would be happy to talk to you personally.
Safety in and around the school grounds
Several parents and community members have contacted the School over the last few weeks expressing
their concerns about student safety in and around the school grounds.
The overflow car park was established off Kyla Avenue for use by the SCAS Community. The new car park
can be accessed from Kyla Crescent just past the school exit gate. Drivers are requested to please park REAR
to fence and ensure that your children are accompanied by an adult to and from this area onto the school
pathways. A gate has been added to the fence to allow easy access to the school grounds.
The safety of our students and school community is of paramount importance. Please take every opportunity
to reinforce road safety rules to your child and proceed to your car as quickly as possible to exit the school
car parks, to enable other parents access to collect their child. Please take particular care in the area adjacent
to the layback onto Kyla Avenue, where entry and exit traffic can become very congested.
