Built for riders who demand instant response and power theDiablo is designed for kite loops, unhooked and new school riding! The Diablo is the only C-shaped kite that truly penetrates the windowand goes upwind like a high aspect ratio kite yet maintains low barpressure and pivots on its wingtip for incredibly fast turns. The ConvertAttachment Points allow you to fine tune your kite to match your style.Wake to Surf to ATV! The 2009 Diablo also features our unique 5thLine System. The trim adjustable 5th line bears no load under normalflight. Dynamic kite transitions can cause kite canopy and leadingedge distortion that are now prevented with our Trim Adjustable 5thLine System.THE KITEBOARDER REPORTLast year we were immediately intrigued by the Venturi vent systembuilt into the canopy of Ocean Rodeo’s kites. We received a 10mDiablo to test and were concerned we would not have enough windon a 15-20 mph day. Out of the bag we noticed the attention to detailin the construction of the kite. The single point inflation system wasquick and efficient and is stock with clips on each strut for a partialbreak down of the kite. The bar system was simple but had stateof the art safety releases including an under the bar center line killthat’s attached to the 5th line on the kite and an easy to use chickenloop quick release. OR also included on the fly line extenders thatallow you to change the length of your lines in seconds. When welaunched the Diablo, everyone was out on 12 and 13m kites so wedidn’t think we’d be able to test sufficiently. We were immediatelysurprised by how much power this kite had to offer when underpowered; each of us stayed upwind without a problem. The Diabloturned quick and smooth and the light bar pressure was a hugeadvancement. The most interesting feature on this kite is the Venturisystem, which is an air vent on the trailing edge, designed to reduceturbulence and back flying. We didn’t notice the gusts opening up thevents and dumping some of the power out like the Rise did last year.In the gusts the kite held strong delivering a steady power stroke anda more mellow transition of power. This kite had significant pop – forsuch a small kite on this day we were impressed with the lift. Theoverall stability of the kite was rock solid. The Venturi system gavethe kite an interesting feel unique from all the rest and we would liketo test it more in different conditions to get a better feel for it. It’ssomething you just have to ride yourself to better understand. Theability depower of the kite is great and it relaunched quickly withoutfail every time. Overall, the Diablo is a great kite for someone lookingfor a C-kite with the forgiveness of a bow kite, or for riders who stilllike C-kites who ride in gusty conditions.Line/bar floatsTips:ControlSystemREPORT CARDInflation System: Quick and efficientControl Bar: Smooth grip and small diameterControl Bar Accessories: Below the bar depower and QRSafety System: The QR is a 5th line leashBridle: N/AStability: Solid with the Venturi 2009 technologyPower: Consistent and versatile in gustsTurning: Responsive and quickPop: Solid lift with lofty jumpsBar Pressure: Adjustable with different connections on the wingtipsDepower: Great range with the Venturi systemRelaunch: Easy with the 5th line being able to roll the kite overDurability: Built durable enough to take a beatingKite Bag: Nice with more than enough room for the kitePump: Kite leash and built with an aluminum shaftExcellentAbove AverageExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentAbove AverageExcellentAbove AverageAbove AverageExcellentExcellentExcellentAbove Average8 The bar is a little slick dry so wet it or your hands down as you enterthe water.8 Tune the trailing edge attachment points to your liking for a quicker orslower turning kite.CONSUMER FEEDBACK: eagwww.kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2352405&p=583604It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on a true C and I was pretty surprised athow comfortable it felt, even in Crissy’s funky winds (San Francisco, CA). It wasa nice change after being on a SLE for so long. It handled the gusts really welland didn’t yank me around much at all. You could ride it every day at Crissy andbe happy, but the Rise is better in the gusts. Power was nice and consistent allthe way through turns and loops — that sensation is missing from even the bestSLEs. It pivots nicely and pulls strong when looped. Nice unhooked with goodslack and not the crazy pull from unhooking my Rise. It’s also fun to just let goof the bar and keep most of your power (there is only about 10” or 12” of barthrow). Definitely not the same power per meter that I’m used to – it felt about asize smaller than the Rise.Diablo wingtipPush awayrelease cuffREPORT CARDTips:ControlSystemInflation System: Octopus single pump inflation systemControl Bar: Ergonomic grip and color codedControl Bar Accessories: Smart Loop sheeting system works efficientlySafety System: Smart Loop release along with a center line killBridle: Color coded and well thought outStability: Steady and rock solidPower: Good low end helps to power upwind betterTurning: Smooth and fast with little bar pressurePop: Kite loves to boost big jumpsBar Pressure: Little bar pressure and easy to ride unhookedDepower: Smooth in its transition on the chicken loopRelaunch: Easy and quick with little swimming neededDurability: Beefed up in the right areas that come in contact with the groundKite Bag: Roomy with stylish graphicsPump: Standard Naish pump with company decal8 Check that the QR below the bar is free of sand and isn’t jammed beforetaking off onto the water.8 The Cult likes to perform best with a little more tension on your back linesfor jumping bigger.CONSUMER FEEDBACK: tonybwww.nwkite.com/forums/t-6416.htmlMy first day out on the Cult was Friday when the wind was really gusty and holey. It was gusting over 35 on the outside but it would drop off to less than 15 or so onthe inside during the lulls. It was like this all week long – hard to get off the beachas the kite is getting knocked around then dropping back, and then once you getup all of sudden the nuclear blast hits you and yanks you out of your socks. BamBam set me up with the 7.5m Cult on 15m lines and sent me out. The kite handledthe gusts and the holes extremely well, dropping back slightly but not surgingahead like some kites. The initial power stroke on these kites is fun too – dive itstraight down, then turn it on a dime about 10 feet off the water and hang on as youaccelerate. It has outstanding all terrainperformance, depower, and amazing handling. To achieve these improvements weadded our new Direct Response Steering technology, Low Drag Wingtips and reengineeredthe bridles. The Cult is designed for beginner through advanced ridersseeking a stable, easy handling, all terrain kite. Naish deserves props for designing a kite that is super easy and smooth tosheet. Naish also gives you the option for a standard loop for riders looking forthat modification in the control system. In the sky, the Cult is definitely a headturner. Its unique shape is designed to deliver stability, light bar pressure, smoothturning and easy relaunch. The first noticeable performance characteristic wefelt was the amount of low end power this kite could produce. The Cult turnedexceptionally smooth and proved itself to be a very stable kite. Relaunching theCult was no problem and the Smart Loop allowed for simple, on the fly trimadjustments when needed. The bridle seemed to have been shortened from lastyear’s model, but we couldn’t check as we did not have a 2008 Cult on hand.As we continued to ride the Cult, we tried to pinpoint the overall feel. Each of usagreed it was a very smooth and fast turning kite with a surprising amount of lowend for such a high aspect ratio kite. With that said, the kite also flew smoothly atthe high end of its wind range. The light bar pressure and easy depower makesit an easy and forgiving kite to ride. Jumping the Cult took a little getting used toagain. The kite has great lift, but the light bar pressure gives it a more gentle andsmooth jumping experience. It was really fun to boost with once we got the timingright in the amount of wind we had. The stability of the Cult was exceptional, andwe have to admit their marketing claim is correct when they said, “they built akite that works in all conditions for 90% of the world’s riders.” We wouldn’t saythat the Cult changes the kiting experience, but it does have a very solid andstable feel that is very comfortable to ride. Bow-style kite riders will love thesmoothness and depower of the Cult. Overall, the Cult is a very nice package andis definitely worth checking out to see if works for you.New bar endCORRECTION to Torch review April09 issue: TheOctopus inflation system is standard on all Torchesand the Shift System does come with a stopper. More advanced riders will lovethis board for it’s designed to be ridden during competitions or for freestyle. There is no doubtthe 134 will be popular because of its quality construction. LF has been making boards foryears and knows the business inside and out. One standout feature of the design is the board’saggressive lines. The smaller rocker helps the board track upwind a little better while alsogiving it a little more speed. The Recoil Comp is a little stiffer than the average board on themarket and offers an efficient amount of drive and glide across the water. Looking down at thebottom of the board, you’ll notice its slight concave, which also helps with the boards’ ability toride upwind easier and hold to the water much better when overpowered. You will also noticethat the rails are a little squarer. This rail works with the board to hold it to the water and alsogives the rider a smoother ride through the chop. The Recoil Comp has a great bit of pop withits stiff structure and faster rails, but in lighter winds, the board may struggle a little more asit will be harder to keep up your speed to create the pop needed. The board has some volumein the middle of it which helps it in lighter winds. Overall, the Recoil 134 is a great board forall riders looking for a kiteboard with solid construction matched with performance. Advancedriders looking for a board that can push the limits will appreciate it more. Lighter wind ridersmight want to trade up to the 137cm.REPORT CARDDurability: Solid finish with LF’s new competition flex profile design ExcellentWeight: Not too heavy with all the hardware strapped onto the board Above Averageturning: Solid smooth transitions with its even flex through the tips ExcellentPop: Snappy with its ability to release from the water quicklyExcellentUpwind Ability: Along with the fins the board’s flexhelps give its drive upwindAbove AverageStraps & Pads: N/AFins: 4 two inch finsAbove AverageOverall Ride: Solid feel under your feet with excellent glide in the lulls ExcellentTips:8 When underpowered the board drives upwind better with a littlemore weight on the front foot.8 In choppy water keep a little more pressure on your back leg toprevent the front fins from catching.CONSUMER FEEDBACK: felixkwww.seabreeze.com.au/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=41518Spent the day using the 2009 Recoil Comp 134 (fitted with LF lace straps).Conditions were very, very choppy and it was blowing between 20-25 knots.I was using a 12m kite and was very powered. This board is awesome! Itcuts upwind and handles the chop very well. It is a very light board so it isreally maneuverable and when boosting it doesn’t weigh you down at all —landings are really nice and soft. Also, today was my first time using the LFlace straps, I love these things! Really easy to get in and out and adjust, niceand comfy, and they actually stayed on my feet.slingshot SXTESTED: 131cm AVAILABLE SIZES: 131, 137, 143 & 147cm Fins: Four 2” finsTHE KITEBOARDER REPORTAt first glance, the Slingshot SX has a real narrow look from tip to tip and the graphics of theboard give it a really a cool stylish feel. The inserts for the straps and pads are positioneda little offset for riders really looking to toe out their stance more. The pads and strapscome with the same texture, look, and design as last year, while the fin setup on the boardcomes with aggressive 2-inch fins that noticeably help the board edge against the kite andultimately upwind. As you start looking closer at the board and its rails, you will notice it hasa thin, hard rail and a little concave to the bottom of the deck. This board is fast in smoothwater but because of its width (on the 131 cm) it tends to need a little more speed andpower while riding upwind in the chop. Just the flex alone makes this board fun to jump andlay into some powerful freestyle moves and handle passes. The pop this board offers caneasily be attributed to the flex and overall design of the SX. While loading up against the kitefor a big jump or even just to go for a back or front roll, you don’t want to edge hard for toolong. This board relies on a quick load and release technique unless taken out in conditionsthat are to your outer limits. Slingshot’s SX also tracks upwind well due to its 2-inch fins andsmall rocker. Any rider from beginner to advanced won’t have a problem benefiting from thisboard. A beginner who gets a chance to ride the 131cm will probably dig its freestyle outline, smooth edging and ability to create a lot of speed, and a more advanced rider may prefer theSX for more control and better performance with advanced tricks. Apart from looking great, this board iseven lighter than the 07, and has awesome flex. It has three runs of woodcore and foam to make it tuff as well. I first rode the SX in about 13 kts ina choppy channel at the bay (somewhere in Australia). This board was sosmooth through the chop, like built in suspension. Great pop for jumps andlanding, nice. Today I got out in the surf at one mile. It was about 3 foot withsome bigger sets coming through. Once again, very smooth and nice to ride.Carving turns off the lip with control. We couldn’t notice if this helped the board ride upwindthrough the chop, however, the TX2 powered upwind better than most. The TX2 has some flexthroughout the board and definitely caused the board to feel a lot smoother when cruisingaround. This also gives the board the ability to hold down a lot more power in the kite inoverpowered situations. We were out in conditions that blew 30+ at one point and the boardadapted to the speed and additional power exceptionally well. On powered moves, it seemedthat every time we landed really fast and flat, the board had a hard and solid landing due toits low rocker profile. Keeping more weight on our back legs and landing more on the railhelped to soften them quite a bit. The fin setup that comes with the board also helps theboards’ ability to track upwind although there isn’t a lot of forgiveness in 2 inch fins. The padsthat come stock with the TX2 have a very comfortable soft feel and the straps really lockyou in. The benefit to riding a board like the TX2 with solid but forgiving flex is that it offersa great deal of pop off the rail when loading against the kite and makes chop feel like buttereven when overpowered. Because of the fin setup, this board does stick to the water so youare going to have to be a bit more aggressive if you are used to a skatey board. If you are ahardcore freestyler, try F-one’s TX2 to help you step up your game.
