SOTSIAAL- JA HUMANITAARTEADUSED | SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES17ESTONIA IN EUROPEAN SOCIAL SURVEYThe European Social Survey (the ESS) is an academically-driven social surveydesigned to chart and explain the interaction between Europe’s changing institutionsand the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of diverse populations. By adoptingrigorous methodological approaches to probability sampling, question-testing, eventrecording,translation and response rate enhancement, the ESS is the authoritativesource of information about changing societies.The ESS questionnaire consists of acore module which remains relativelyconstant from round to round and tworotating modules. The core moduleaims to monitor change and continuityin a wide range of social variables,including media use, social and publictrust, political interest, participation,socio-political orientations, governanceand efficacy, moral, social values, socialexclusion, national, ethnic and religiousallegiances, well-being, health, security,human values, demographics and socioeconomics.The ESS collects also a widerange of methodological data, includingtests of reliability, call records, data oninterview settings and event data.EXISTINGINFRASTRUCTUREEstonia joined the ESS in the secondround in 2004. The ESS biennial timeseries build survey upon survey and thedataset will provide a unique long-termaccount of change and development ofmodern Europe. Each ESS round coversover 30,000 face-to-face interviewsacross Europe, including Estonia. Dataof the ESS are available via website(http://ess.nsd.uib.no). The ESS doesnot have any restrictions on access, norany privileged arrangements for certainusers. The ESS Bibliography (http://ess.nsd.uib.no/bibliography/) containsinformation about publications based onthe European Social Survey.NEW INFRASTRUCTUREBesides providing new data layerswith information for the ESS database,one of the key purposes of the ESSin future is to refine and extend theexisting ESS networks, consisting ofresearchers, practitioners and otherusers, and supporting data users todevelop both more efficient as wellas better methods. The internationalprogramme of quality enhancement isdesigned to encourage a stronger focuson survey quality issues, protocolsand procedures. The same principle isfollowed in Estonia. The other aim is tohttp://www.so.ut.ee/355545,ESS www.europeansocialsurvey.orgdevelop and popularise the ESS knowledgehow to distinguish high qualitysocial surveys from low quality ones.The ESS Estonia will also encourageparticipation of Estonian young andsenior researchers in the substanceand methodological networks of comparativeresearch.PARTNERSHIPSThe survey covers more than 30 nations.The ESS Estonia will encourageparticipation of Estonian researchers indifferent methodological and scientificprojects.
