Great Books Foundation and helped create <strong>the</strong> ‘Great Books of <strong>the</strong> Western World’ series. This<br />
subseries highlights some of <strong>Paepcke</strong>’s wartime contributions when he served as chairman of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Community and War Fund of Metropolitan Chicago. This subseries also contains issues of<br />
<strong>The</strong> Red Fea<strong>the</strong>r, a publication of Community and War Fund. Subseries 2 includes information<br />
on <strong>Paepcke</strong>'s service as direc<strong>to</strong>r and trustee of <strong>the</strong> Encyclopedia Britannica, <strong>the</strong> Orchestral<br />
Association and <strong>the</strong> Ford Foundation as well as <strong>the</strong> creation of <strong>the</strong> Fund for <strong>the</strong> Advancement<br />
of Education, Inc. It also includes <strong>the</strong> Art Institute of Chicago, <strong>the</strong> Council for Financial Aid <strong>to</strong><br />
Education and WPP's involvement in <strong>the</strong> Bilderberg Meetings, including his attendance at <strong>the</strong><br />
1959 conference.<br />
Subseries 3: Property Investments, includes information on <strong>Paepcke</strong>’s purchase and development<br />
of farmland, between Somonauk and Sandwich, Illinois; and <strong>the</strong> management of his Perry Park<br />
Ranch in Larkspur, Colorado.<br />
Some of <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>pics mentioned in Series I, General Files include: <strong>Walter</strong>'s wife, Elizabeth<br />
(Pussy) <strong>Paepcke</strong> and children, Anina (Nina), Paula, and An<strong>to</strong>nia (Toni); business colleagues;<br />
investments; relatives in Europe; effects of <strong>the</strong> Depression as well as WWII on his business and<br />
personal life; farm in Sandwich, Illinois and dude ranch in Larkspur, Colorado, both of which<br />
were developed <strong>to</strong> include experimental farming and breeding of animals; <strong>the</strong> development of<br />
Aspen, Colorado; and <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong> Festival.<br />
