Series III: Goethe Bicentennial Foundation
Series III contains the records of the Goethe Bicentennial Foundation and covers the period
1947 to 1951. This series has been divided into 6 subseries: Correspondence Files; Subject Files;
Public Relations; Fundraising; Publications; and Scrapbooks and Clippings. Photographs found
in this series have been moved to Series VI. The records provide information on documentaton
of what was needed to create, organize, publicize and fund a major intellectual and artistic
gathering. These records include correspondence of many on the GBF Board of Directors
and the general staff regarding projected costs, festival site, public relations activities, funding
campaigns, scholarly and musical participants, brochure and booklet printing, press coverage,
and budget deficits, as well as responses to the program itself from festival attendees.
The Goethe Bicentennial Foundation was a non-profit corporation created in the Fall of 1947
to organize a festival to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Wolfgang von
