Series III contains <strong>the</strong> records of <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong> Bicentennial Foundation and covers <strong>the</strong> period<br />
1947 <strong>to</strong> 1951. This series has been divided in<strong>to</strong> 6 subseries: Correspondence Files; Subject Files;<br />
Public Relations; Fundraising; Publications; and Scrapbooks and Clippings. Pho<strong>to</strong>graphs found<br />
in this series have been moved <strong>to</strong> Series VI. <strong>The</strong> records provide information on documenta<strong>to</strong>n<br />
of what was needed <strong>to</strong> create, organize, publicize and fund a major intellectual and artistic<br />
ga<strong>the</strong>ring. <strong>The</strong>se records include correspondence of many on <strong>the</strong> GBF Board of Direc<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
and <strong>the</strong> general staff regarding projected costs, festival site, public relations activities, funding<br />
campaigns, scholarly and musical participants, brochure and booklet printing, press coverage,<br />
and budget deficits, as well as responses <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> program itself from festival attendees.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong> Bicentennial Foundation was a non-profit corporation created in <strong>the</strong> Fall of 1947<br />
<strong>to</strong> organize a festival <strong>to</strong> celebrate <strong>the</strong> 200th anniversary of <strong>the</strong> birth of Johann Wolfgang von<br />
