The idea for the establishment of the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies (AIHS) emerged
from the success of the Goethe Festival held in Aspen in 1949. The festival, which honored
the German poet and humanist, launched the idea for an intellectual and cultural center of
continuing education. In 1950 the AIHS was organized by Walter P. Paepcke, chairman of the
Container Corporation of America and a key player in the Goethe Bicentennial Foundation
and festival. The AIHS was created as a non-profit institute that supported the tradition of
free inquiry into the realm of ideas and the communication of the arts. The institute provided
seminars, lectures, forums, and discussions conducted by leaders in commerce, industry, science,
education, religion, and government.
The institute's programs included an Executive’s Program, which gave people experienced
with decision making the opportunity to understand their role in society and develop goals
and convictions for their lives. Also, a Lecture Series offered weekly discussions on the "Great
Ideas of Contemporary Man"; a Health Center that provided activities and facilities for exercise,
recreation, and relaxation; and the Aspen Music Festival provided concerts, recitals, films, and
artistic exhibitions.
