Series IV: Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies<br />

Series IV, contains information on <strong>the</strong> Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies and covers<br />

<strong>the</strong> period 1945 <strong>to</strong> 1976. <strong>The</strong> files in this series were maintained by <strong>Walter</strong> <strong>Paepcke</strong>, founder<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Aspen Institute. <strong>The</strong> series has been arranged alphabetically by subject and includes<br />

correspondence, financial documents, contracts, brochures and publications. Pho<strong>to</strong>graphs found<br />

in this series have been removed and placed in Series VI.<br />

<strong>The</strong> idea for <strong>the</strong> establishment of <strong>the</strong> Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies (AIHS) emerged<br />

from <strong>the</strong> success of <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong> Festival held in Aspen in 1949. <strong>The</strong> festival, which honored<br />

<strong>the</strong> German poet and humanist, launched <strong>the</strong> idea for an intellectual and cultural center of<br />

continuing education. In 1950 <strong>the</strong> AIHS was organized by <strong>Walter</strong> P. <strong>Paepcke</strong>, chairman of <strong>the</strong><br />

Container Corporation of America and a key player in <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong> Bicentennial Foundation<br />

and festival. <strong>The</strong> AIHS was created as a non-profit institute that supported <strong>the</strong> tradition of<br />

free inquiry in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> realm of ideas and <strong>the</strong> communication of <strong>the</strong> arts. <strong>The</strong> institute provided<br />

seminars, lectures, forums, and discussions conducted by leaders in commerce, industry, science,<br />

education, religion, and government.<br />

<strong>The</strong> institute's programs included an Executive’s Program, which gave people experienced<br />

with decision making <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> understand <strong>the</strong>ir role in society and develop goals<br />

and convictions for <strong>the</strong>ir lives. Also, a Lecture Series offered weekly discussions on <strong>the</strong> "Great<br />

Ideas of Contemporary Man"; a Health Center that provided activities and facilities for exercise,<br />

recreation, and relaxation; and <strong>the</strong> Aspen Music Festival provided concerts, recitals, films, and<br />

artistic exhibitions.<br />
