For example: If the server wins the first point thescore would be 15-Love. If the receiver should win the first point, the score would be Love-15.04

GameThe most difficult part of scoring in tennis is the game. Points make up a game. The first person to win4 points (by a margin of two or more) is the winner of the game. The unusual thing about the game iswhat happens if the score becomes 3 points all (tied at 40-40). At that time the score would be deuce. The next point won after deuce would be one of the players advantage. It might be stated advantageserver or advantage receiver or more formally Advantage Mr. Smith. The next point won after someone’s advantage would either be game or deuce again. Some matches have a short deuce or sudden death deuce meaning, that then next point after deucewins the game. In sudden deuce the receiver decides which side of the court the server serves to.SetsA set is completed when one of the players wins six games by a margin of two or more games. Therefore, the score could be 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, or 6-3, or 6-4, but not 6-5, It could be 7-5 (because a playerwon by a margin of two games). Should the score go to 6 games all, a tiebreaker would be played todetermine the winner of the set.MatchesA match can consist of:a)b)c)The best of two sets with a 3rd set tiebreaker to ten points if ties at 1 set each (commonly usedin tournaments when there is a high number of matches in a short time). The best 2 out of 3 sets (common in senior tennis). The best 3 out of 5 sets (same is used in major tournaments such as U.S. Open and Wimbledon).TiebreakerThe tiebreaker is played if the players reach 6 games all. The next player to serve (player A) will servethe first point from the right hand (forehand) court. The next two points will be served by player Bbeginning from the left hand (backhand) court, then the right (forehand) court. The forth and fifth points will be served by player A, beginning with the left court, then the right court. The sixth and seventh points will be served by player B, beginning with the left (backhand) court, again. This goes on indefinitely until either player wins 7 points, by a margin of 2 or more. It is possible for thescore to be as high as 21-19, because a player must win by two points or more to win the tiebreaker! One final note: After each six points of the tiebreaker, the players should switch ends of the court.Tennis Canterbury05

TENNIS PLAYER ETIQUETTEBelow are some guidelines with regards to tennis etiquette.Do:- Be honest with your calls. If unsure the ball must be called in.- Make sure the ball bounces before calling it in or out.- Make sure your opponent is ready before serving.- Call the score so your opponent can hear before the start of the next point if you arethe server.- Leave your racquet on the court if you have to leave for any reason and explain to youropponent why you are leaving. Taking your racquet indicates you are abandoning the match.Do not:- Hit back serves if serve is obviously out.- Walk behind a court when a point is in progress.- Throw your racquet or swear - this is not acceptable behavior on the tennis court. You have 20 seconds between the end of one point and the beginning of the next. You should be readyto serve or receive inside that time. You have a one minute break between the change of ends for adrink and rest.PARENTS, COACHES & SPECTATORS REQUIREMENTS(From Tennis NZ Rules and Regulations)Parents, coaches, friends and spectators are part of the ‘support team’ for players. During matchesyour principal function is to let the players play and enjoy themselves while giving them encouragementin the normal sporting manner. Here are some “do’s” and “do not’s” for the support team.Do:- Applaud good play and winning shots by both teams.- Keep outside the court area (behind fences and off the court surface).- Accept the decisions of adjudicators and the line calls of players.- Liaise with the team manager if you feel there is a problem arising on court.Do not:- Communicate with players verbally or by signal during a match (including change of ends).- Call the lines from outside the court – the players call their own lines.- Coach players from the sidelines.the change of ends for a drink and rest.08

All players, regardless of age, arein the same list however there are separate lists for males and females.CR gradings are based on results in head to head matches. The number of points a player has denotestheir Grade on a scale of one to twelve where one is best. Each Grade encompasses a range of about300 points (see Gradings Table to left below)CR Grading Points RangeS1S2S3S4S5S6S7S8S9S10S11S123000+2701 – 30002401 – 27002101 – 24001801 – 21001501 – 18001201 – 1500901 – 1200601 – 900401 – 600201 – 400100 – 200A Player’s position in the Grading table is based on resultsin Interclub and Tournament matches. Each match generallyresults in the winner gaining points and the loser losingpoints. The number of points gained or lost depends on therelative gradings of the two players at the date of the match.A Player automatically moves up, or down, a grading whenevertheir points move into the range of the next grading. A playeris not rewarded just for playing many matches - unless he/sheconsistently wins against higher ranked opponents.I’m new to CR – how many points do I start on?At the start of each interclub season there are a numberof new players who must be given CR codes and pointsfrom which to start. As a rule players are given the pointsindicated below, relevant to their age, although coachfeedback or otherevidence may result in an adjustmentof these starting grades.10 and under11 years old12 years old14 years oldS12S11S10S9Tennis Canterbury09

How many CR points can I win or lose in a match? The aim of giving more points to S9-S12 players when they win a match is to bring them throughthe grades quicker, making their points in comparison to Senior players more accurate.Adjustments when the winner has the higher points:Points DifferenceWinner S1-S8Winner S9-S12Loser S1-S120 -992030-20100 - 1991520-15200 - 2991010-10300+550Adjustments when the winner has the lower points:Points DifferenceWinner S1-S8Winner S9-S12Loser S1-S120 -992030-20100 - 1993045-15200 - 2994060-10300+50750Doubles PointsCR also maintains individual Doubles Gradings. The average of each partnership’s points is used todetermine adjustments made to each player. How often are Gradings recalculated?CR gradings are recalculated on the 1st and 15th of each month, or first workday thereafter. Therecalculation takes all new match results and processes them in date order. The Configure Rankingswebsite is updated immediately.Am I in CR already?Go to www.tennis.org.nz and search for your name. You can also search the list by Grading,Association, Club, and Age group. Also view your own match history or that of your friends oropponents. How do I get on CR?You need a CR Player Code. This is a 6-7 character code that uniquely identifies you. It has the format010

CBEWRF where CB = your Association (in this case Tennis Canterbury), FW = your Club (in this caseEdgeware), and RF = your initials (in this case RF is Roger Federer). Having a number in your code (asabove) means that more than one player at your club has the same initials as you.Tennis Canterbury will assign CR player codes based on the recommendations above. Please contactyour club administrator to create a code. Codes are transferred if you move club or region.Do I have to start at the bottom Grade? No – you will be assigned a starting Grade, based on club recommendations, that places you at a levelrelative to your ability. Thereafter, actual match results will gradually move you up, or down, to yourcorrect position. Is there a minimum age to be in CR?No – but results are only counted from events open to 10 year olds or older. So an 8 or 9 year oldcould be in CR if they are playing in 10s events. Results from 8s or 9s events are not included. Allmatches must be to a minimum of six games (normal deuce) for CR eligibility and must be approvedby the Region. What results count towards my Grading? All results count from tournaments on the Tennis NZ Calendar, including consolation events that arerun using TMS (Tournament Management System or TP (Tournament Planner). Results from matchesbetween New Zealand players in overseas events are also captured (eg ATP, WTA, ITF).Results from regional and club events can also be included when they have been flagged as countingtowards CR. National Teams events as well as many inter-provincial teams events are captured, alsoInterclub competitions run using the CR Interclub system will count. The more matches you play thenthe more accurate will be your Grading. What about Mixed Gender MatchesMixed gender matches can count towards CR points for grades S12, S11 and S10. Mixed gendermatches are common in rural areas of the country where playing numbers are low, or in startertournament play. Are defaults or retirements counted? Matches that are defaulted before a point isplayed are not counted for CR points. If a player retires or defaults for any reason after a match hasstarted, then the result is counted as a loss and they will lose points. Can I play Interclub or Tournaments without a Player Code? You must have a Player Code otherwise your results cannot be included in CR. It is important to alwaysinclude your Player Code when entering a Tournament.Tennis Canterbury011

What does CR have to do with Interclub?CR can assist Associations to run Interclub competitions. It can even enable Team Captains to entertheir results directly via the Internet. Points tables and team results can all be viewed on the ConfigureRankings website. Click the Menu in the top left corner and select Competitions List. What about privacy? The only personal details shown on the website are name, association and club. Players may alsorequest that their playing history be blocked from public view. Contact your Association to request thisoption. What if I play for two clubs? You have to nominate a home Association and Club that will be used for your CR code. You can usethe same code even if you play interclub for another club. This is so that all your results contribute toyour grading. What about Doubles matches?CR also calculates Doubles Gradings - based only on results from Doubles and Mixed matches. You do not have to have both a Singles and Doubles grading. It just depends on what competitivetennis you play.Player InactivityPlayers, S9 and above, who have not played for twelve months will be deducted 100 points in Julyeach year to simulate lack of match practice. A player will not be penalized more than two years insuccession. For rare cases, such as players maintaining their level of tennis whilst overseas, clubs mayapply to their Region for a manual adjustment that must be cleared by TNZ.What benefits does CR bring to Tennis?- Encourages and enables more competitive play and provides an incentive for players to improve.- Creates a common interest and boost enthusiasm amongst players- Encourages competitiveness - all matches count towards ranking points providing incentive forplayers to improve and reach their potential- Assists selection of teams – locally, regionally and nationally- Facilitates the running of more tournaments including those for players who are not A graders- Assists qualifying and seeding of players for tournaments- Allows for play anywhere at a level matching abilities- Enables set-up and monitoring of interclub competitions- Reduces mis-matches in interclub competitions - evenly matched teams according to playergrading’s Questions. Please direct any questions to topdog@tennisnz.com012
