TENNIS CANTERBURY REGION INCORPORATED
ANNUAL REPORT 201 1-201 2
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
There can scarcely have been a more dislocated year for Tennis Canterbury since its beginnings in 1890, at
least within living memory. Yet at the end of that year (April 2012), in many ways the organisation was
stronger than ever with a clear pathway ahead by way of a robust Strategic Plan in regard to its
operational activities and very exciting options in regard to a future tennis centre. A year then, of planning
rebuilding.
The 2011 earthquakes commencing on 22 nd February 2011, just several weeks before the beginning of the
year embraced by this report, had profound consequences on all aspects of Tennis Canterbury Regions
Incorporated’s (TCRI) year.
Wilding Park had of course been devastated by the earthquakes and the facilities of a number of clubs
had also been damaged to various degrees. Joint meetings were held between the TCRI Board and the
Wilding Park Foundation Board in order to come to terms with the magnitude of the task ahead. Both
Wilding Park Foundation and TCRI necessarily had to begin to consider the tasks facing them and to work
in cohesion with each other.
Interclub, both at junior and senior level had been greatly disrupted by the February 2011 earthquakes
and a difficult season ahead was initially looming this past year. However, as a result of a superb
commitment by the Clubs, (who made available at some sacrifice to their members, a requisite number of
courts for Interclub) and the exceptional commitment by TCRI’s staff to the huge task of coordinating the
allocation of players to courts throughout the season, Interclub was very successfully run at all levels. Quite
apart from the commitment of the Clubs, the players themselves not only accepted the playing of
Interclub away from a central venue, (unique in itself in New Zealand) but actually embraced it with social
activities often arranged around the interclub ties, which had many positive benefits.
The year also saw the standing down of our former CEO David Blackwell who had held the reigns in this
role for some 20 years. During this period of time he successfully established the Canterbury Region at the
forefront of tennis in New Zealand in terms of achievement in so many areas, establishing a number of
initiatives which were in many instances adopted nationally and which still remain in place today. I extend
my very grateful thanks to David for his leadership of the organisation throughout that period of time and
for all that he has achieved for the benefit and advancement of the sport in the Region.
In his place has stepped Neil Prior as our new CEO. Neil has had a substantial background with Tennis
Canterbury having been for over a decade a member of the Marketing Advisory Group and more
recently a Board Member. He brought with him a wide range of skills, perhaps most strongly seen in the
marketing and communication fields and since he started in January 2012 he has undoubtedly “hit the
ground running”. His time commenced just at the time that the Board looked to implementation of a new
Strategic Plan which it has spent so much pain staking time constructing. Moreover, Neil has necessarily
applied a substantially disproportionate amount of time towards earthquake recovery but what he has
achieved in a relatively short period of time has been quite remarkable. Not only has he fully embraced
and understood the technical complexities of the construction and insurance fields but he has also, by his
energy and enthusiasm, placed TCRI at the forefront of sport bodies in Canterbury who are leading sports’
reconstruction and recovery drive.
I must also extend my very grateful thanks and appreciation to the staff at Tennis Canterbury. Through all
types of difficulty and disruption they have not only persevered but have been dynamic in the
organisation of regional tennis in this last year, during particularly difficult times. Their results, particularly in
regard to the successful Interclub year, have been quite spectacular.
3
As to the Board and the Advisory Groups, their members have been called upon to address governance
issues at a pace and to an extent well beyond normal expectations. The Board has met for more than
double the usual expected annual number of meetings, in view of the additional meetings and workshops
convened specifically to draft a new Strategic Plan and also to address the building or reconstruction of a
future tennis centre. There has been demonstrated an extraordinary commitment by all Board Members
and I am greatly indebted to them for their huge governance contribution in this most difficult of years. The
outcome, to which I turn shortly, will serve the sport very well in the next few years.
Apart from the usual operational business of Tennis Canterbury, which has not largely abated, there was
the compelling need to draft a new Strategic Plan, which was due last year in any event, and which led
therefore to the opportunity fully to consider the values and priorities for the future which we saw for the
organisation. The draft plan was sent to the Members for consideration and consultation.
In the Plan there are set out our values (the five values being integrity, accountability, excellence,
collaboration and innovation) and also the big five strategic priorities, which are fully set out in the Plan.
The Board spent up to 20 hours in several dedicated workshops to identify the values which drive us and
the purposes and priorities which we will set to attain. A large undertaking but a rewarding outcome.
Recognition must also be given to the Advisory Groups in the areas of Game Development, Interclub and
Marketing and Communication, which have been very energetic and pro-active in terms of advancing
their particular areas of expertise in order to advance the priorities under the Strategic Plan.
In summary, we have strongly overcome the adversities of early last year and by rigorously addressing the
specific difficulties, (such as Interclub) and by planning for the future. We conclude the year by being in a
position where we clearly have a vision for the future and can look in this next year to restoring much of
what was damaged, delayed or disrupted. With adversity comes opportunity and this next season looks to
be a very exciting one indeed.
CEO’s REPORT
It is my pleasure and privilege to provide this report for the 2012 Annual General Meetings of Tennis
Canterbury Region Inc (‘TCRI’) and also of Wilding Park Foundation Inc (‘WPFI’), my first Report as your
Tennis Canterbury Region CEO.
The last 12 months since our previous AGMs can accurately be described as a period of change – and I
believe that as an organisation we have made significant progress in the last year. Some of that progress
has been challenging and at times uncomfortable – but progress based on change often is.
At the time of this AGM I have been in my role for 7 months, and a very busy 7 months it has certainly been
which I will endeavour to summarise.
REGIONAL TENNIS CENTRE EARTHQUAKE RECOVERY
By necessity, much of my role has been dedicated to the reinstatement of our regional tennis centre. Our
“EQ Recovery” has been a long, exhausting, and often complex one that has been frustratingly slow at
times, but always with the knowledge that we must balance the need-for-speed with ensuring good
decisions are made and that the final outcome is the best for our sport in our Region, now and well in to
the future. At time of writing, we are fast closing in on what that best outcome will be. Your WPFI chairman
Lindsay North reports in more detail in this Annual Report about the process undertaken and of the
progress made in the last 12 months. At all times, we as an organisation have endeavoured to keep you
well informed about this process, our considerations and the decisions taken, via online information,
Forums, newsletters, and surveys.
The impact of the earthquake on clubs cannot be overlooked either – for many clubs it has been
devastating, and an extremely difficult period for you also. The way that clubs have managed their
recovery has been nothing short of magnificent, and I congratulate you on your efforts. There is still a long
way to go, but your dedicated response to this challenge has been inspiring to us in our own earthquake
recovery endeavours.
GAME DEVELOPMENT
Whilst much time has been devoted to our EQ Recovery, it has also been important that we do not take
our eye off the ball and that we ensure we continue to deliver fun and competitive participation
opportunities to our tennis community – and I can confidently say that I believe we have done so.
Much of the credit for achieving this must go to the tireless skills and dedication of our Game Development
staff: Hamish Cain (Regional Game Development Manager), Angela Mitchell (Game Development
Assistant) and Val Harris (who retired in May). Thanks to their efforts, we have delivered club support,
interclub competitions, tournaments, a representative program, player development opportunities, and
coach development opportunities also. Our ‘Tennis in Schools’ program continues to grow and is the envy
of other Regions. Our new “Wilding Challenge” has been a huge success also. We are also reinstating a
new Player & Coach Development Structure.
To the Tennis Canterbury Region Game Development team, I extend my sincere thanks for a job well
done, and done so with huge enthusiasm and skill: “Thank you!”.
FINANCE
The earthquake has not only impacted significantly on the Z Energy Wilding Park facilities. It has, as you will
see from the Financial Statements, impacted on our financial position also which has resulted in a deficit of
$197,106 for the period.
This result has been mitigated by prudent financial management, including the cutting of costs as much as
is possible and appropriate, without compromising the support and services you require from us. Whilst our
resources have been limited, we have continued to deliver the core activity and support our tennis
community fully deserves.
5
The major loss of income has continued to be felt primarily through the loss of the indoor tennis centre
court hire revenue. In previous years this asset has delivered revenue in the region of $200,000 p.a, which is,
not coincidentally, approximately the level of deficit experienced in the financial result. At the time of
writing this report, I hope to be in the final stages of securing access to the indoor centre, but court hire
revenue has not been included in the budget for the period as it is too unknown.
Our major revenue streams are: Affiliation Fees; modest Sponsorships; and Grants (a source of income that
cannot be guaranteed). All of these revenue streams have remained largely consistent with those of the
previous financial period, and of course we have not had the benefit of any tennis centre court hires. The
commercial lease revenue gained in previous years has also been lost due to the loss of these leased
premises (the Caterers Pavilion and Pro Shop) at Z Energy Wilding Park.
To assist in the understanding of the overall impact of 22 February 2011 earthquake on Tennis Canterbury
Region Incorporated and Wilding Park Foundation Incorporated, consolidated financial statements have
been prepared. These represent the combination of both Tennis Canterbury Region Incorporated and
Wilding Park Foundation Incorporated.
The overall position is a net loss of $39,231. The write down in value of property, plant and equipment has
had a significant impact on the result. Before depreciation and write down, the consolidated entity made
a cash surplus of $547,268. This included proceeds from the insurers and Earthquake Commission of
$792,590 and earthquake recovery project costs and earthquake-related repairs to rental properties of
$185,866.
TCRI and WPFI have prepared a business interruption claim for the indemnity period for the 12 months
following the 22 Feb 2011 earthquake. This claim is to compensate for the loss of revenue after adjustment
for the reduction in the cost of operational costs. The claim has yet to be assessed by the loss adjustor so in
accordance with the accounting standards any insurance proceeds received will be recognised in the
year in which it is received. The calculation of the claim entitlement is subject to agreement of the loss
adjustor so we are not in a position to determine the amount to be received as at balance date therefore
no amount has been recorded in the financial statements to 30 April 2012.
ASB Bank as Major Sponsor of Tennis Canterbury, has continued to provide us with tremendous financial
support by way of an “interest holiday” for much of the period, and supported us in other ways also. ASB
are a huge supporter of our game, understand well the challenges we currently face, and I cannot
adequately thank them enough for their support and assistance.
My sincere thanks go to Andrew Radburnd (Deputy Chairman) and Jane Glentworth (Treasurer) for their
expertise in the finance area. The earthquake has again made for a very complicated financial period,
and for the preparation of the Financial Statements which due to the current circumstances has
demanded even greater time of Andrew and Jane. They have also been preparing the insurance claim
for Business Interruption reported on above. Thank you Andrew and Jane for your expertise.
We will be presenting a Budget for the current financial period at this AGM, and it is fair to say that the
current year will also have significant financial challenges in terms of revenue and costs. We will continue
to deliver prudence with regards expenditure, and look for additional revenue opportunities.
In May, Administration & Finance Manager Louise Fleming left us for 12 months maternity leave, and we’re
all delighted by the safe arrival of Louise and Bevan’s wee boy Will. Jaimee Thomson has been welcomed
to our office team, and is doing an excellent job in the finance area of our business.
I would also like to thank Warren Johnstone and his BDO audit team for their expert Audit of our Financial
Statements.
6
*****
GOVERNANCE
I believe that our sport enjoys one of the strongest and most expert governance teams of any sport in our
Region. I have had the opportunity to network with many codes in our region, and I can assure you that
the quality of our governance is at the forefront of local and regional sporting organisations.
Since the 2011 AGM, the TCRI Board has completely re-written our Strategic Plan and this plan has
become the “road-map” for tennis for the past 12 months and will do so for the next two years also, when
it will be reviewed and adapted for the next three year period. Any Strategic Plan is, and should be, fluid
and subject to change and refinement as the dynamics of the time influence it. Each 90 days the Board
develops a “Concurrent 90 Day Plan” which identifies the top five outcomes to be achieved for that
period. Peter reports in detail on our Strategic Plan in his Chairman’s Report.
The WPFI Board is also developing their own Strategic Plan, and this is an exciting and important piece of
governance work also.
My thanks go to TCRI Chairman Peter Maciaszek and his Board for their astute governance and their
support of me and my administration team.
Peter and Lindsay North, WPFI Chairman, have donated much additional time out of their busy legal
practices to assisting with our EQ Recovery also and they report in detail in their respective Chairman’s
Reports. Thank you Lindsay and Peter, your expertise is greatly appreciated.
An important and valuable feature of our governance is our Advisory Groups: Interclub; Player
Development; and Communications & Marketing. Thank you to Mark Barnes, Glenn Wilson, and Ty Tiller for
your chairmanship of your respective Groups which play an important role in our success both on and off
the court.
COMPETITIONS
Interclub enjoyed another successful season. Congratulations to all grade winning teams, and a huge
thank you to clubs for their continued support by hosting interclub on your courts in the absence of a
regional tennis centre at which to play these competitions. A number of successful Tournaments have also
been hosted by clubs – again, thank you for providing your facilities.
Tennis Canterbury’s ITF Junior Tournament was jointly hosted with Mid Canterbury Tennis Association in
Ashburton, and our thanks go to Cynthia Christie and the MCTA administration team, and the Canterbury
Tennis Umpires Association, for an expertly delivered event.
Our juniors enjoyed some success at the National Teams Events, with the highlights being our 14’s Boys
winning their national title, and the 12’s Boys being runner-up.
Our competitive season culminated in a very enjoyable and successful Season Awards at which we
celebrated excellence in all aspects of our game, both on and off the court. Congratulations to all
winning teams, players and administrators. Special congratulations are extended to Burnside Park Tennis
Club for their winning of the inaugural ASB Club of the Year Award.
TENNIS OPERATIONS, ADMINISTRATION, AND CLUB SUPPORT
Communication with our tennis community has been greatly enhanced over the last 12 months, and this is
an area of real focus for us as your administration team. When a sport talks with, and in turn listens to their
stakeholders, much can be achieved. I thank the Clubs, Associations and Sub Associations for the part you
play in this improved communication.
Club Support is an area in which I believe we can do much better things. We are working closely with Sport
Canterbury on the “Club Mark” Club Capability program, and Sport Canterbury have also supported a
tennis community wide independent study, the results of which will help us better understand our
“customers” that participate, either socially or as affiliated, in our sport: Who they are; Why they choose to
participate; What type of tennis experience they want; and Where they play our game. This will be a
valuable piece of research which we are committed to sharing with you.
7
I’m pleased to report that our affiliated membership numbers have remained steady (refer to the table on
page 30). Whilst a loss of 4.8% in affiliated player numbers is not desirable, it is a steady recovery from the
effects of the earthquake at a time when many sporting codes and other community organisations are
experiencing similar difficulties with membership retention.
SPONSORSHIPS
Our valued Sponsors have all stood by us in these challenging times and at a time when, because of these
challenges, we have not always been able to deliver on the entitlements in their agreement with us. Thank
you to: ASB (Major Sponsor and Official Bank of Tennis Canterbury),
Wilson (Official Ball of Tennis Canterbury); Kia (Official Vehicle of Tennis Canterbury); Forrest Wines (Official
Wine of Tennis Canterbury); and Z Energy as Naming Rights Sponsor of Z Energy Wilding Park Tennis Centre.
COMMUNITY GRANTS
Community Trusts continue to play a major role in funding our game. Without their support, it is not an
understatement to say we would be in greater financial difficulty. These grants are of course never
guaranteed year-to-year, and to that end our reliance on them in our financial model is not an ideal one.
However that said, that is the nature of sport and our business and whilst we rely on them greatly we must
at the same time seek other forms of more secure funding.
Thank you to Mainland Foundation; Canterbury Community Trust; NZCT; and Air Rescue Services for your
financial support of Tennis Canterbury and many of our clubs also.
Christchurch City Council also provides significant financial assistance through their grants – thank you.
Sport Canterbury fund to a great degree our successful “Tennis in Schools” program and we have invested
much in developing our relationship with them, and I’m pleased to say this relationship is now of a much
higher quality than it has been of recent times. Sport Canterbury provides program support in other areas
also. Our sincere thanks go to Geoff Barry and his team.
TENNIS NEW ZEALAND
We continue to enjoy a high quality and enjoyable relationship with our National Association. Not only do
they provide us with funding assistance, but together in partnership they help us deliver tennis to our
community.
A significant initiative that was presented to our stakeholders in May was for a proposed new Affiliation Fee
Model and National Database. These initiatives have the potential to re-shape our sport locally and
nationally. We fully support these, and ask that our Clubs, Associations and Sub Associations do also. These
initiatives will develop further over the coming months.
CONCLUSION
I hope that as a tennis community you believe that we support you, deliver what you need as stakeholders
and participants in our game, and enjoy working with us. I believe we have made great strides in the last
year in major areas of our game, but I also know that there is still much to be achieved (and always will
be!). With your support and assistance, we will achieve even greater outcomes and more progress
together over the next 12 months.
Thank you for your support, and the warm welcome I have received from you all in coming in to my role as
your CEO. I congratulate you all on your past year, and thank you for providing tennis participation
opportunities to our community: Well done!
The winners of the Grand Prix are players with the most accumulated points from senior interclub
throughout the season:
Women: Joelene Feneon Men: Remi Feneon
ASB Club of the Year Award
Burnside Park Tennis Club
Burnside Park Tennis Club is a very worthy inaugural winner of the 2011/12
ASB Club of the Year Award.
Burnside Park are an outstanding club, both on and off the court. On court, they achieved the rare
“double-double” of winning both the ASB Senior Women and ASB Senior Men interclub titles and Summer
Leagues; host a successful Business House Competition; and have a very strong Junior Section also.
Off court they lead the way in terms of quality of governance and administration, encompassed by their
“Better is BEST” mission statement, their galvanising message for excellence.
The club participates strongly in governance at Region level, supported Region initiatives and requests for
court availability for tournaments and interclub, and hosted Regional Forums post-earthquake.
An innovation of the club has been the pioneering of a “Dynamic Information System” which allows their
administrators to immediately post important information on their excellent website.
ASB Player of the Year Award
Peter Hampton, Cashmere Tennis Club & International
In 2011 Peter enjoyed a highly successful year on the international circuit, winning the British Open Clay
Court Championships, being a finalist in other international tournaments, and reaching an ITF 50+ singles
ranking of No.5.
That rich vein of form continued in early 2012 with further tournament successes including the ITF World
16
Seniors Championship. Peter now holds and ITF 55+ singles ranking of No.7, and a 55+ mixed doubles
ranking of No.2 in the world.
These achievements saw Peter awarded the New Zealand Tennis Senior of the Year Award.
Senior Administrator of the Year Award, in association with Kia:
Guy Armstrong, Cashmere Tennis Club.
Guy is an outstanding club administrator, and can rightly be described as a “stalwart” of his club. A
Committee member since 2000, he has held the position of President to lead the committee with
distinction and commitment since 2002.
He has managed his club through difficult financial times, and has overseen very significant growth in
social membership and in interclub teams also.
Guy is described as having superb people skills which has enhanced club spirit and member involvement
in their club.
Post earthquake, Guy and the Cashmere Tennis Club committee has always supported requests from
Tennis Canterbury to provide courts for interclub and tournament play.
17
Junior Administrator of the Year Award, in association with Z Energy:
For the 2011 / 12 Season Junior Administrator of the Year, two outstanding individuals could not be
separated when considering this inaugural Award.
Reuben McNabb of South Brighton Tennis Club combines the roles of Junior Administrator AND Club
Coach, and has done so for 5 years. In this time, the junior membership has grown, and the quality of junior
play has also lifted considerably.
Throughout a period of severely damaged courts, his organisational skills in combining the resources of
South Brighton, North Beach, and Burwood Tennis Club’s ensured young players on the hard-hit eastern
side of Christchurch were still able to play both recreational and competitive tennis to complete a
successful interclub, club champs and junior coaching program.
Alison Ford, Beckenham Tennis Club is the second and equally deserving Junior Administrator of the Year –
an outstanding organisor, extremely popular with both junior players and parents alike.
Alison has been described as “the glue that holds the entire Junior Section together” – organising teams
ensuring all get equal playing opportunities; building the junior club to the size it is now including 28 junior
interclub teams; knows every child by name – no mean feat – and treats them all with respect irrespective
of ability.
Coach of the Year Award, in association with Brittain Wynyard & Wilson:
Matt Meredith, Cashmere Tennis Club.
Matt epitomises all that a great coach should be: technically excellent; has a wonderful rapport with junior
players and their families; and is committed to working fully with their Club committee and in particular the
Junior Administrator to deliver the Junior Tennis Program.
Matt is committed to professional development to become an even better tennis coach.
Matt is also a NZ Junior Selector; NZ 12’s Age Group Coordinator; coached the Canterbury 12’s Boys team
to Runner-up at the recent National Teams tournament; travelled to Australia with the NZ 12’s and to Fiji
with the NZ 18’s; is Head Coach of St Margaret’s College who achieved 5 th at the National Secondary
Schools competition; and at club level coached 9 of 22 teams to Junior Interclub Finals.
Tennis Canterbury Personality of the Year Award, in association with Forrest Wines:
Joelene Feneon & Remi Feneon.
It’s hard to know if the recipients of the Tennis Canterbury Personality of the Year Award should be
described as individuals, or as a “team”!
Both are highly accomplished players – bragging rights would make for interesting dinner table
conversation!
Remi is also an accomplished coach, including coaching of Canterbury squads, and Joelene coaches
also.
For these two, tennis is also a family affair, with their children playing and loving the sport too. Without
doubt, the passion, commitment and love of tennis is matched equally by the other.
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
SCHOOL’S PROGRAMME
The Tennis in School’s Programme, which is funded by The Community Trust and Sport Canterbury through
the KiwiSport initiative, assists clubs throughout the region to build up a community link with local schools in
their area. This programme continues to introduce a large number of young children to tennis and this is
reflected in the increased number of interclub teams entered by clubs. Again this year more than 100
schools were visited with the programme being delivered to around 15,000 children.
WILDING CHALLENGE
The Wilding Challenge has been introduced and targets juniors aged 10 and under. This initiative has seen
the region split into zones and juniors competition in a teams event format. Over 100 children and 10
coaches took part in this new programme.
CANTERBURY TENNIS UMPIRES’ ASSOCIATION
Canterbury Tennis Umpires’ Association has had a very challenging year.
We, along with Canterbury Tennis have endeavoured to step up to the mark to provide competitive
environments for local tennis using many different venues.
Running junior tournaments at multiple venues has been quite testing - for us and the players – as
Lincoln/Cashmere and Edgeware/Bishopdale combinations were used amongst others, but all parties took
things in their stride, and good tennis was facilitated. Hamish Cain and his team have done a marvellous
job from the eerie silence of Wilding Park to get the clubs humming, and hosting more competitive tennis
than some of them have for many years, and they co-ordinated well with CTUA to administrate much of
the organized tournament play.
Canterbury has 3 ITF qualified officials, in Rosemary Hargreaves, Tony Brosnahan and Tony Glentworth.
They have been variously active locally and further afield, with attendance at a Pro Circuit tournament in
Alice Springs, the Davis Cup tie in Tauranga in February, Australian Open in January, and we are honoured
that Tony Glentworth will be attending the Paralympics in London after the Olympics, and also umpiring at
events in Turkey on his way to officiating at Wimbledon.
19
Other notable local officials include John Flatt, who regularly comes down from Blenheim for Canterbury
events, and is our man on the ground at Marlborough tournaments; Ching Evans, Peter Johnston and the
evergreen Lew leComte who have ably assisted Rosemary in running a number of events. The Watts family
is probably unique in officiating, with 6 members taking the court at the ITF tournament in Ashburton in
January! Congratulations to Richard and Maria and the 4 children - Ana, Ruth, Samuel and Abigail. The
family has also been represented with distinction at the Auckland Majors in January, and Davis Cup tie in
February, along with Miriama Flatt and Matt Laurie. Mattias Wieland has had a wedding on his mind
(congratulations to him and his new wife!), but has still been active nationally during the summer.
We, via NZTUA Development Officer Tony Glentworth, are offering our expertise and training to every
corner of New Zealand tennis, from International events down to local club champs, where qualified
umpires can enhance a finals day (not least by keeping people informed of the score!).
Our new New Zealand Tennis Umpires Association website nztua.com contains lots of information including
useful contacts for people wishing to become involved, whether to be on court with the greats, or just
learn the rules. There is a calendar of events, upcoming opportunities, pictures of our members in action,
and links to relevant tennis sites.
Many thanks
Tony Brosnahan – Honorary Chairperson
CANTERBURY TENNIS SENIORS’ ASSOCIATION
I have much pleasure in presenting the 31 st Annual Report for the Canterbury Tennis Seniors’ Association
Inc.
It has been another difficult year for Canterbury Tennis as a whole, but one everyone has managed to
adapt. This has been seen with Seniors Tennis, clubs have stepped up and made their courts available for
Tennis Seniors tournaments and representative matches throughout the year.
This has been a great help to us to keep things as normal as possible. I wish to thank Elmwood, Burwood
Park and Bishopdale clubs for the use of their courts, Bishopdale for our committee meetings and all the
people that helped run the kitchen and bar facilities in these clubs.
In some ways, I think that using these courts have brought us closer together.
National Seniors Teams Tournament:
This was hosted by Hutt Valley and attracted a good number of teams from all over New Zealand, though
more teams from the North Island than the South.
The Men’s 60+ team were runners up, beaten by Nelson/West Coast in the final.
Women’s 70+ team was placed 2 nd:
Women’s 50+ was placed 3 rd:
ITF world Seniors Events:
Over the past year Canterbury players have been active overseas. Matt Sunderland went to San Diego in
the teams event, and Colin Hunt played in the teams event in Turkey.
Peter Hampton continues to excel on the seniors circuit. In San Diego he was a semi-finalist in the 55+
men’s singles and losing finalist in the 50+ mixed doubles with Felicity Oxnevad.
20
*****
Peter has continued this rich vein of form into 2012 with strong performances at the ITF Worlds
Seniors Championships held in San Diego during February.
In the 55+ singles he beat the 4th seed in the quarters losing to the eventual winner of the event in
the semi finals.
In the 50+ mixed doubles playing with Felicity Oxnevad they were losing finalists.
At the Melbourne – Victoria Championships he was 55+singles champion and won the mixed doubles with
Felicity Oxnevad.
ITF world Super Seniors Teams Events:
Three Canterbury Tennis Seniors Members have been selected to play in New Zealand Teams at the ITF
World Super Seniors in Umag, Croatia 10-15 September 2012. Men’s 60-65: Marty Searle; Men’s 65-70: Colin
Hunt; Men’s 70-75: Bill Thom (captain). Congratulations to these players. Unfortunately Marty Searle has
had to withdraw and Colin Hunt thinks he will have to do the same, both due to injuries.
On the Local Scene:
Again we have had quite a busy season. Our membership has had a slight increase with a few younger
members coming into the fold, and our finances are solid though some fresh ideas on raising more money
would be helpful. It looks as if there could be changes to the Charities Act, which could see us losing
access to these funds.
However on the positive side it is pleasing to see Canterbury Tennis coming through with ideas and plans
for Wilding Park and when established Canterbury Seniors could benefit in the future.
We all await the final outcome.
Committee:
Over the year we have had a few resignations, Lynne Switalla to do other things, Grazie Daly our secretary
for health and work reasons, Andy Bramwell with a work move to Wellington and Brian Needham our
match committee convenor to spend more time with his family.
To those people, particularly Grazie Daly and Brian Needham, for their time and effort I thank you and wish
you all good luck on your new ventures.
I also wish to welcome Ashley Forbes onto the seniors committee and we already have benefitted from his
wealth of experience.
To all the other committee members thank you for all the work you have done over the last year.
Award:
At the National Teams medal presentation evening Pam Goddard was awarded with the Tennis NZ Seniors
Service Trophy. I was pleased to see her work over the years rewarded.
Sponsorship:
Thank you to Vinters Wines, Humming Bird Coffee, and Bishopdale Sports for their continued support.
Canterbury Tennis Seniors’ benefits from sponsorship, especially for our tournaments.
I look forward to the New Year with renewed vigour and optimism for the future of tennis in Canterbury.
WILDING PARK FOUNDATION INCORPORATED
ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR
YEAR ENDING 30 APRIL 2012
The last 12 months can only be described as difficult. As a consequence of the earthquake on 22 nd
February 2011, Wilding Park suffered major damage. While that occurred in the previous financial year,
the full effects of the damage were not clearly known as at last balance date on 30 April 2011. Since that
time, there has been a tremendous amount of work carried out on Wilding Park by a large number of
people. Unfortunately however, progress during the year has not been as fast as the Board initially hoped
because it has become apparent as matters have progressed, that the issues surrounding Wilding Park are
numerous and complex and that significant deliberation is required before decisions are made as to the
future of the complex.
During the year, there has been significant investigative work carried out on the Park. Geotechnical
Reports have been obtained on the land quality. The reports show that the land quality is extremely poor.
That poor land quality makes repair of buildings expensive and in the case of the outdoor courts,
reinstatement or replacement, problematic.
Most of the buildings at the Park have also been seriously damaged. It appears that the administration
building and adjoining indoor court complex are able to be repaired although at significant cost.
However, these buildings are well insured and the repair cost is significantly less than the insurance cover.
The other buildings, namely the outdoor wooden stands, the memorial stand and the catering building
have all suffered major damage and the cost to repair those buildings is either in excess of or close to their
insured value. Resolution of the insurance claims in respect of the buildings were still unresolved as at
balance date and is still progressing as at the date of this report.
The Foundation also had insurance cover of $25,000.00 per court over 30 outdoor courts. Payment has
been received from the insurers.
Decisions are still to be made as to the future of Wilding Park. Since balance date, there has been
consultation with the local clubs to advise them of progress and the possible options available. That
consultation process will continue until decisions are made about the future of Wilding Park.
In that regard, the Board, in conjunction with the Board of TCRI have considered three possible scenarios.
These are:-
(a) Stay at Wilding Park and reinstate the whole facility. That does not seem a likely outcome given
the poor ground conditions and the uninsurable risk which would arise in the replacement of
outdoor courts.
(b) Relocate the entire facility to a new location. That option is still under investigation. It is fair to say
that it involves substantial cost and the potential for there to be a significant loss of value from the
realization of Wilding Park assets.
(c) Repair the administration building and indoor centre at Wilding Park but establish a new satellite
playing facility of a minimum of 16 new courts and a new location. Again, consideration of this
alternative is still being undertaken.
The effects of the earthquake have been substantial. Those effects not only relate to the playing of tennis
but also to the finances of the Foundation. Because of the low quality land which comprises the Park, it
has become apparent that the previous book values for the land and various fixed assets were overstated.
There has accordingly been a significant right-down in the accounts in some of the fixed assets to reflect
the new reality in which we now find ourselves. Those right-downs are simply a consequence of the
availability of more information about the land which underlies Wilding Park and the potential
reinstatement costs of various facilities.
There has been a huge amount of work by a number of people during the year. I would like to record the
appreciation and thanks of the Board to Neil Prior who became the CEO of TCRI at the beginning of the
year and became heavily immersed in earthquake recovery work for the Foundation. His contribution has
been immense. I would also like to thank the time spent by the members of both Boards and in particular,
Peter Maciaszek, the Chairman of TCRI. He has spent a huge amount of time on Foundation matters in
addition to his responsibilities of TCRI. A number of members of the tennis community have also
volunteered their services and I would like to record our thanks to Richard Dalman, Marty Searle, Graham
McDonald, Tim Howe for their time and expertise. Mention must also be made of Arrow International, our
project managers who have provided excellent service and whose expertise has been much
appreciated.
