Despite budget cuts and the recession, the editors of the 2010 Arrowhead felt the students at their school were still 

working hard and doing their best. Discussions about this idea led the staff to the theme “Don’t hold back.” 

When editor-in-chief Grace Cusson was describing the theme “Don’t hold back” to her adviser, she threw her shoulders 

back and put her arm in the air. Her body language in that moment is mirrored on the cover. The editors knew they 

wanted a crowd shot from a football game to capture the emotion behind the theme “Don’t hold back,” so they sent 

photographers to take a bunch of photos. Then, the staff sent some of the photos to a Walsworth cover artist who 

put together the final cover design in a Virtual Cover design session. “It was like their brains were being read by the 

computer,” Ray said.

The colors, fonts and style of the text from the cover are repeated inside with the table of contents. The Arrowhead staff chose to use its school colors 

throughout the book to drive home the point that the Vero Beach Indians “Don’t hold back.” 








The 2010 Arrowhead theme, “Don’t hold back,” is clearly a school-spirit-fueled theme. Two of the photos on the title 

page drive home this point — a boy in face paint for a football game and a girl showing off her senior T-shirt. The third 

photo, of two boys who crashed a skimboard at the beach, represents a different angle of the theme “Don’t hold back”: 

a personal angle. The editors felt strongly that the students at their school lived life to its fullest in their academic and 

personal lives. 

Strongly titled photos and thick lines continue the design theme of the Arrowhead on the title page. 








Photos that convey school spirit and strong angles further develop the connection between the visual aspects of this theme and the verbal. The designers of 

the Arrowhead were clearly willing to take risks and push the envelope of design, but they did so tastefully and with clear attention paid to internal spacing and 

consistency. 

The opening copy presented on this spread includes specific details about new things at the school (including a new principal), but ends with these words, 

“Though faced with new challenges, we found ways to adjust to the changes, we kept moving forward, and we reminded ourselves, ‘don’t hold back.’” 








The second spread of the opening continues with the same design as the first, tying these two theme-development pages together. More details about the 

school year personalize this theme copy and demonstrate ways in which students are following the theme’s advice by not holding back. 








Stories in the student life section focus on the passions students pursue outside of school. In this story, students who practice martial arts and students who 

enjoy watching professional fights are profiled. 

Strong graphic elements, including thick lines, bold colors and radically tilted design elements continue the theme visually, as the Arrowhead designers clearly 

followed their own advice — “Don’t hold back.” 








Bold, slanting lines and stark white-on-black contrast indicate division pages in the 2010 Arrowhead. Each division spread highlights one student who really 

pushes himself or herself to succeed. On this sports divider, the headline “Unleashed” introduces a short copy block about athletes who embodied the idea of 

not holding back. The girls’ cross country team placed their highest ever at the state competition, so the lead photo on this spread is of a cross country runner 

giving the sport her all. 








One way to avoid holding back is to “Release your mind.” This title introduces the academics section and leads into a short copy block that explains that some 

classes put extra work on students, but that those requirements did not hold back anyone from doing their best. 

Photo selection is important on the divider pages. Because each division spread only has one photo, the photo needs to convey the mood of the section and 

further the theme. On this spread, a girl who gives her art projects 100%, represents not holding back for the entire academics section. 








To “Open up” is one way to follow the advice “Don’t hold back.” It is also the spin-off title for the clubs section. Strong colors in this photo help pull readers in to 

the spread and interest them in information about club members who really worked hard during the 2009-2010 school year and did not let anything hold them 

back. 








The closing spread of the 2010 Arrowhead mimics the design of the opening spreads, tying these theme-related pages together. Notice how the photos chosen 

clearly show school spirit and connect with the photo on the cover of the book. The pull quote on this page states, “There seems to be an extra lot of school 

spirit around this year,” and reinforces the fact that this theme was a great choice for Vero Beach High School in 2009-2010. 








The last page of the Vero Beach High School Arrowhead offers a send-off to students at the end of the school year. 

“Regardless of where we came from, we leave this year of Indians and rush into the future not holding back,” the 

copy reads.
