First wedding ceremonycelebrated in Belin ChapelWith all their firsts at HBU, Ryan Yarrington ’05and Alyssa Johns Yarrington ’07 were destined tobe the first couple married in the Belin Chapel.Ryan and Alyssa first met at a Husky Preview in the spring of2002. Then, in the fall of 2003, when Alyssa was moving into thedorms, she spotted Ryan again. She remembers leaning over toher mom, Cathy Johns, and saying to her, “I’m going to marrythat boy!”After a first date during Welcome Days, a first “I love you”soon followed on the stage of Holcombe Mall. The coupleannounced their engagement on June 16, 2006.They had initially planned to wed in a church in the springof this year as the Morris Cultural Arts Center and Belin Chapelwere still under construction. When the option to wed oncampus was presented to them, Ryan, Alyssa, and their parentstook a leap of faith and booked their wedding and reception forthe weekend of July 28.“We really wanted to have our wedding in a place thatmeant something to both of us,” said Alyssa.Once the venue was determined, the planning to create a“fairy tale” wedding began. Starting in mid-May, e-mails andphone calls between the bride, her mother, and the Office ofUniversity Events and Conferences became a daily ritual. “Iknow that most people hire someone to plan their wedding, but it made it so much more special to me that my mom tookthe time to work with the University to plan every detail of ourwedding,” said Alyssa. As July drew to an end, the big day arrived. Like mostbrides, the moments just before with her parents and the walkdown the aisle were among the most memorable for Alyssa. ForRyan, “there was one simple reason for being there; everythingelse is somewhat of a blur. All the people who came were therefor me, Alyssa, or us. I was there to marry her.”The University allows up to two weddings per month, and the calendar is booked through August 2008.
