HBUCreateMarie Weichmanadjunct professor in artMarie Weichman works in multiples; as a twin, (half ofa whole yet simultaneously an entire whole) she embracesconnectedness. This summer she had the opportunity toconnect with artists across the world in Jindazhen, China,where she spent two months creating art and interactingwith the Chinese people and the environment.“Travel is about the people,” Weichman says. “Andwhat amazing people! Jindazhen is the porcelain capitalof the world. It’s in their blood. They have been in thetradition for 1500 years.”It is easy to imagine Weichman at work in China whenyou watch her at work on a project here in <strong>Houston</strong>. Sheworks the soft clay (good for large vessels, she says) on thewheel, rhythmically pushing and pulling, leaning, flexing,working water and sponge as the glistening clay wallsarise.“My graphic}arts degree is rooted inclay; my bloodline runs with earthand feldspar.”Marie loves working with the students at HBU andoffers these tips for aspiring artists: “exercise personaldiscipline, work hard all the time, stay in touch with yournetwork and connect with others!”Marie has an impressive line-up of exhibitionsscheduled for the next year from coast-to-coast.- LJRSelf Portrait in ReverseHBU 32 NEWS
Melanie Wade Leslieassociate professor in artSoul-freshening Santa Fe summers suffuse MelanieLeslie’s dreamlike metaphorically rich paintings andprints. A talented painter and printmaker, Melaniedescribes herself as a “poetic layerist.” Some of hermost intriguing pieces are collages of different fibrousmaterials, all of which “relate in terms of form andtexture.” Collage represents the many layers of life, Lesliesaid. “We define our lives in layers and it is that layeringthat forms the substance of who we are and what ourreality is.”Most of Leslie’s work embraces the essence of horsesin some way, so it is not surprising to learn that “horse”was one of her first words. She sees her art as “a poeticmetaphor of the human spirit embodied in the image ofthe horse” and in her work she “knits together the essenceof the historical equine icon with its mystical energythrough layers of texture and color.”Leslie speaks especially highly of her students atHBU. “We have high caliber students with immensepotential,” she said. “It’s exciting for me as a teacher to seea student moving past the rote task of painting into therealm of self-expression that gives them worth.”Alter Ego Transcending“A friend once asked me what three things}were most important to me, what I couldnot live without. My response: I need to beable to write stories, ride horses, and paintpictures.”Leslie reviews a print with a student at the Museum ofPrinting History.Summer of 2008 will find her in Hilmsen, Germany,where she has been awarded a residency in printmakingsponsored by internationally known artist and curatorHans Molzberger. Experiences like this allow artists thetype of focus necessary to hone the visual voice and feedtheir souls as they provide that important breath of freshair and a renewal of inner peace. “To emulate God ismiraculous, a life-calling,” Leslie said. “To glimpse Hiscreativity in this way is awesome.”Leslie’s work is on display across Texas and thesouthwest.- LJRHBU 33 NEWS
