Congratulations on your
retirement Hanka Brown
retiring from work often means a brand new phase and style of life. it
usually is a time of new ventures, more leisure, and either a greater variety
of activities or a quieter routine with increased reflection. We
congratulate Hanka Brown on her retirement after 21 years of service to
Case Western reserve University and the school of Dental medicine. on
June 28th, the student council hosted a retirement party for Hanka to
celebrate this next phase of her life. Hanka says she still awakens at 6:00
a.m. but can now roll over and go back to sleep. although she will miss
the interaction with the students, she now has the opportunity to be
more involved in the lives of her grandchildren and spend more time with
retired husband, Jim. With a happy look on her face, Hanka states, “Having
a job you enjoy is great, but it’s now time to be home with the hubby. “

tapped the talents
of a CWrU faculty
member, Michael A.
Landers, ’76,
associate professor
in the department
of oral diagnosis
and radiology. He
was named vice-president for sections of
the aDea.
the american association for Dental
research (aaDr) awarded the 2012 William
B. Clark Fellowship in Clinical research to
Leena B. Palomo, ’00, ’04, assistant
professor in the department of
Leena B. Palomo, D.M.D.,
M.S., ’00, ’04
periodontics. the
award was
presented at the
aaDr annual
meeting in tampa,
Florida, in march.
Dr. Palomo’s
research interests
center on the effect
of bisphosphonates
on the
periodontuim in post-menopausal women.
this award will allow Dr. Palomo to further
her work and experience in using multiplex
elisa testing for serum inflammatory
cytokines and checkerboard Dna-to-Dna
hybridization techniques.
she will also collect subgingival biofilm and
crevicular fluid samples from a population
of otherwise healthy postmenopausal
women diagnosed with periodontitis who
are using bisphosphonate therapy for the
prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
she will also collect samples from
demographically matched postmenopausal
women who do not use such therapy.
microbial species and cytokine response
between the two groups will be compared.
the fellowship award was established in
memory of William B. Clark and is
supported by P&G Professional oral Health,
Crest oral-B. the award recognizes
investigators carrying out clinical research
in periodontology. n
