Craniofacial Center opens its doors to
care for special-needs patients

there are many underserved and special-needs patients,
particularly children, in the Cleveland area who suffer from
moderate to severe craniofacial issues. mindful of this, and as a
centerpiece of the school’s mission to serve the community, the
long-awaited craniofacial imaging center opened at the school of
Dental medicine in mid-June. two other key components of
providing world-class care in this realm are a new fellowship in
craniofacial care and an investment in new technology, specifically
the purchase of a CBCt machine from Carestream, our corporate
partner.
the realization of these innovations and the reality of bringing the
center to fruition are the result of years of work and planning. they
are also the result of the foresight and generosity of a number of
alumni. Here we feature three who each have played a major role.
Gift memorializes two mentors
Jack Beattie,
D.D.S., M.S., ’63
Dr. Beattie, who was in private practice in
Florida for many years and is now retired,
explains that his gift included a cash
donation and legacy gift of $100,000. Dr.
Beattie’s contribution to the building and
upgrade of the craniofacial center data
repository “has given me the satisfaction
of being a part of the memorializing of my
mentors, Drs. B. Holly Broadbent, Sr. ,’19,
and Jr., ’52. i gave the eulogy for the junior
Dr. Broadbent,” he explains. “this gift helps
me to preserve my mentors’ memory.”
Dr. Beattie hopes that his gift will also help the school of Dental
medicine to continue “functioning as a fountainhead of knowledge,”
he says. “i want the CWrU school of Dental medicine to become
the magnet for research, an enterprise that was started by the
Drs. Broadbent, and which will continue with the improvements in
the orthodontics imaging center.
“this trajectory has continued under the leadership of Dr. [Mark]
Hans, ‘79, ‘81,” he continues. “Dr. Hans has framed it and has
created a world-class record-storage facility.” Finally, says Dr.
Beattie, “the the repository will remain exactly where it belongs. it
was visionary for the CWrU dental school to create it, and to
continue in this role. most of all,” he says, “my gift stems from the
fact that at the school of dental medicine, the right things are being
done by the right people.”
Dentistry—a ‘dream life’
Bradley W. Hylan,
D.D.S., ’79
Dr. Hylan contributed more than $35,000 in
equipment, which included three treatment
delivery systems and other equipment
from his company, Clevedent. He says that
he decided to contribute now “because this
is just something i wanted to do. i am
thankful for having had the opportunity to
become a dentist. and this is my way of
thanking the people at CWrU for the
opportunity.” He adds, “my life has been
very good and i am thankful every day. i
have had the opportunity to live a dream
life because of dentistry. By contributing, you’re helping other
people … and if i could help somebody to live a life of their dreams,
then that would be very exciting.”
it wasn’t all roses, however, says Dr. Hylan. “ironically, what
resonates with me about my experience at CWrU is how crazy the
grading system was when i was in school (by the way, i understand
they have changed the grading system). i couldn’t wait to get out. i
hated school. i wanted to quit. However, once i got into private
practice, i realized what a great education i received there.
