The authors have put to the test for the first time a comparative PARmethodological instrument and a wide variety of techniques for thedissemination of knowledge in the field of social action and political practicein such a way that a need has been met at both the scientific and socialdevelopment levels.In stressing the need for stable and strong grass-roots organisations, thestudy provides the rural working classes with the basic intellectual equipmentrequired to defend their interests. IntroductionThe five years following the Cartagena World Symposium of 1977, whichlaunched the methodology now known as participatory action research .(PAR), were an intense period of trial and error for both revolutionary anddevelopmentalist policies. The' results of these years have been submitted tointernational criticism and the practical consideration of grassrootsorganisations. From Asia and Africa to Latin America and here and there inEurope, the United States and Canada, PAR has made its presence felt bothscientificallly and politically and is recognised dialectically in both spheres.In the process of determining its specific components, it has tested in practicethe techniques and guidelines which distinguish it from those other activitieswhich seek to combine knowledge with efficacy in the task of socialtransformation.Numerous field reports were made by those of us who carried out theseexperiments and national, international and regional meetings were organisedfor this purpose. Several theoretical works were published, and an initialattempt was made at systematisation with the compilation of one or twomanuals of procedure.(See the bibliography on P. 98.)Although our cultures and political systems as well as the premises of ourresearch-and ideologies were very different, we managed to achieve aconceptual and technical consensus in a way which we had never expected.Perhaps the common problems of the poverty, exploitation and oppression ofour nations brought9
