PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASSThe Roman Missal: For your InformationHave you ever been to a dinner where you see someone with whom you did somethingwrong or against them? The tension is pretty evident and there are some awkward moments.Well, whenever we sin against the Lord, there is a level of tension and for this reason weseek the Lord’s forgiveness. For this reason, the priest invites y’all to reflect on your sinsand to offer them up before the Lord. He does this by saying, “Brothers and sisters, let usacknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries”. It is inthis moment that the people take a moment of silence to acknowledge ones sins. During thistime at Mass we chant the invocation chanting, “You were sent to heal the contrite” and all respond, “Kyrie, eleison”. The term “Kyrie, eleison” is a Greek (not Latin) phrase meaning, “Lord, have mercy”. The nextinvocation is “You came to call sinners” and all respond, “Christe, eleison”. This Greek term means, “Christ, have mercy”. The term Christ is a Greek term meaning, “anointed one”. In the Bible, Jesus himself says,“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; He has sent me to bring good newsto the afflicted, to bind up the brokenhearted…” (Isaiah 16:1). During this time we are appealing to Jesus asthe anointed one to have mercy on us and because of his role as the Christ, he will oblige to our requests. Thefinal invocation is, “You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us” and all respond, “Kyrie, eleison”. There are various ways that the Church provides for us to ask for the Lord’s forgiveness, which wewill cover in other FYI. At the end of the rite, the priest offers the absolution, “May Almighty God havemercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life”. This absolution offers forgiveness of venial, not mortal sins. This is the reason the Church teaches that in reconciliation we are only to confess mortal, notvenial sins, since they have been forgiven during this time (and multiple times during the Mass). In various parts of the Gospel, when Jesus is challenged by the Pharisees, scribes and other opponents aboutwhy he hands out with “tax collectors and sinners”, he tells them, “Those who are well do not need aphysician, but the sick do…I did not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Matthew 9:11-12, 13) Each timewe attend Mass, we accept the invitation to draw close to God and to ask for his love, mercy and generosity. At the end of John’s Gospel, Jesus asks Peter, “Peter, son of John, do you love me more than these” (John21:15) and “Peter, son of John, do you love me?” (John 21:16 and 17) In asking this and Peter responding“Yes, Lord, you know that I love you” (John 21:16) Peter was forgiven of his triple denial during the Passionof the Lord Jesus. Thus in same manner, we as Christians have asked for Jesus’ forgiveness to which, as hedid to Peter, will grant us is we are truly repentant.
