Principals report 20 th July, 2012
Uniform
At Staughton we have an expectation that every student arrives ready for school each day in
full school uniform. I would like to congratulate the vast majority of students who do this very
well! Wearing our uniform is important for many reasons including:
 Demonstrating pride in the school
Improving attendance and positive student behaviour
Helping students resist peer pressure to buy expensive clothes
Diminishing economic and social barriers between students
We have recently added a number of optional items to the school uniform, largely from student
suggestions. They are
 A school blazer
A longer school scarf (the old scarfs are available discounted to $7.50)
 A school beanie
These items will soon be available at our uniform shop which is open Monday’s 8-10am and
Thursday’s 3pm-5pm.
Students who do not meet our uniform expectations, receive a serious of escalating
consequences. From next Monday this will include confiscation of non uniform items such as
scarfs, hoodies and hats. All students in the school have been made aware of this in year level
assemblies this week run by members of our Student Operations Team.
Positive behaviour
At Staughton we have three Rights and Responsibilities:
LEARN
RESPECT
SAFE
Students are regularly taught our expectations of positive behaviour in these three areas and
most students meet our expectations most of the time. When a student is not meeting
expectations teachers will have a calm conversation to agree with the student as to how they
can meet our expectations of positive behaviour. It is important that we make the most of these
conversations in the first few weeks of semester 2.
Student Voice Magazine
I would like to thank our Student Leadership Team for organising the student run “Student
Voice’ Magazine. The first edition was released this week and is an interesting and worthwhile
read. Students have worked hard to put together a professional publication. Hard copies are
available in the school library and on the student activities notice board. You can sign up for a
copy to be delivered to your email address on the school website. Well done to all staff and
students involved!
Athletics Carnival
Friday 3 rd August, 2012
The annual Staughton College Athletics Carnival was originally scheduled to be held on the 25 th of May. Due to the untimely blast of
wintery weather the carnival had to be cancelled. The track was inspected at 8am and was deemed unsafe for use.
The revised date for the carnival is now FRIDAY 3 RD AUGUST. This will tie in with the year 7 ‘Thinkfest’ day. Students in year 8 – 11, as
well as some year 12 students will be participating. Year 7 students will be running athletics events through their normal PE classes.
A reminder that students are required at school before 9am, to allow for the buses to be boarded and leave on time. Students will have
to return to school via the bus and will not be dismissed from the venue. Be sure to wear your house colours, school uniform or sports
uniform.
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support
This year Staughton College has been operating a whole school recognition system which rewards students who demonstrate the
schools rights and responsibilities. During terms 1 and 2 there was a different behaviour focus each week. This term students who
demonstrate the agreed behaviours from the school behaviour matrix will be rewarded with an entry into the regular school draw.
In accordance with the guidelines set by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) all students at
Staughton College are expected to wear the correct school uniform whilst at the College, travelling to and from the College and
when attending College functions.
Students who wear non-school approved hats, scarves, jumpers or jackets will have them confiscated by staff members. All
confiscated non-school items may be collected from the general office at the conclusion of the school day. Please ensure all
uniform items are clearly named.
Year 12 Unit 3 Physics, Biology and Chemistry Revision Talks
In the lead up to Midyear exams we were able to participate in several Year 12 Unit 3 revision talks. These talks were
delivered by past VCE students who had achieved a study score of 50 in the subject.
Eddie, who presented the Chemistry and Biology talk is currently in his second year of a Medicine Degree at Monash
University. His gave us a full set of notes each to take home, with clear explanations and time to ask questions. Eddie
also gave us advice on exam techniques, preparation tips, hints for getting into the ‘exam zone’ and useful websites
and videos to assist us with topics we needed help with.
Madeline, who presented the Physics talk, was leaving for America the next day to visit Yale on a study tour.
The talks went for approximately 4 hours after school and were available to all year 12 Physics, Chemistry and
Biology students. Staughton College subsidised the talks, which made them affordable, and because the talks were
held here at school students who participated did not have to travel, miss classes or valuable weekend study time.
We would recommend the revision talks to other students and hope that we can take part in them again for Unit 4
Chemistry, Biology and Physics revision, next semester.
Thank you to Ms Stuchbery and our teachers for making these talks available and for encouraging us to attend.
Year 12 Chemistry and Physics
At the end of Term 2 students in years 7-10 looked at jobs, careers and possible options for their futures. The year
7-9 students spent time on how they see themselves, how others see them and what types of jobs and interests
different types of people have. They were able to start putting together some ideas for future goals and subject
choices. Their teachers explained the pathways available and answered questions about subjects.
Year 10 students had a range of activities organised in order for them to gain a greater understanding of career
opportunities/ pathways and courses available and to help them make subject choices for Year 11. They worked on
Career Plans where they outlined the type of job they would like and what they may need to do to get that job. With
assistance from careers counsellor and teachers, year 10 students used the Victorian Job and Careers guide to help
them identify the subjects they need as prerequisites for jobs, training or university courses, which will also help them
choose their subjects for Year 11. Year 10 students also had time to work on their future profiles online and visited
Deakin University, Geelong, where they explored, visited different faculties and met lecturers and current students.
Our course counselling presentation evening will be held at 7 pm on Tuesday July 24 th for all current year 8,9 and 10
students and parents. Please speak with your child about subject choices and encourage them to start thinking
about the subjects they will choose for next year.
If you have any questions, please contact the school careers advisor Mrs Lauren Woodward.

SEASONS – A GRIEF AND LOSS PROGRAM
In Term 3 Staughton College will be offering a program for students who have experienced the
loss of a significant person in their lives. This loss may have occurred because of family
separation or death. The loss may be recent or it may have occurred a few years ago.
Julie Halantas and Bernadette Barclay (Student Counsellors) will run the program. The group will
consist of 8-10 students who will meet together on Tuesdays for approximately 8 weeks. Sessions
will be rotated throughout the term in an effort to prevent absence from the same class. It should
be noted that students will need to catch up with any class work they miss. This program is a peer
support program. It is not a counselling program.
Students will be provided with the opportunity to share their story in a caring, trusting environment
via drawing, music, talking etc.
The Seasons Program hopes to assist your child in expressing their feelings, to learn to live with
the loss/change that has occurred and to move on with a stronger sense of health and well being.
If you would like your child to participate in this program I encourage you to discuss this with them
and complete the reply slip. Please return slips to the school via the office by Friday June 22 nd .
Places are limited so please ensure you return your reply slip ASAP. .
Any queries or for more information please contact Julie or Bernadette on
(9747-6805 or 9747-4622).
