Principals report 7th December, 2012
Yr7 2013 Welcome Night
On Monday night we held our annual Welcome Night for parents of our 2013 Year 7
students.
It was pleasing to see so many parents and to share our whole school messages for
student success. Briefly we talked about:
Our expectation that every student follows our motto of ‘Try, Persevere, Achieve’ to
accomplish significant improvement in learning and the extra support the school will
provide including homework club
The importance of effort, particularly during assessment so we can monitor student
learning
The priority of reading and the importance of students reading at home as well as at
school
Encouraging your child to take part in the co-curricular activities at the school such as
sport, music, debating, and lunch time clubs.
Clear consequences for students meeting or not meeting behavioural expectations
from our three rights and responsibilities Safe, Learn, Respect
The importance of regular attendance in improving student learning and our 90%
attendance policy
The strict enforcement of our uniform policy
 The 1:1 netbook program
I would like to give a big thank you to our transition coordinator Ms Lou Bentley for her
work throughout the year in organising all of the transition events for these students
and parents. Thanks also to other staff who contributed on the night, Year 7
Coordinator Tim Davey, Wellbeing staff member Bernadette Barclay and Ben Russell for
presenting the netbook information.
We are looking forward to a successful start for all of these students on Orientation day
next Tuesday.
Polish program
A number of Year 9 students participated in a one day workshop program from the
Beacon Foundation called The Polish Program. The program helps young people prepare
for their careers through personal presentation and communication training. Students
in the program worked on personal presentation, communication, confidence and selfrespect,
goal setting, planning and public speaking skills.
“It was a very positive experience. The program taught us what to do, and what not to
do when attending a job interview. It was really helpful and I learned how to tie a
Windsor knot in a tie, which was fun. Lunch was great, and I gained lots of confidence.
I would certainly do it again.” Ryan Gatt, Yr 9
All students enjoyed the experience and thanks went to Ms Woodward for organising
the day, Ms Jowett year 9 Co-ordinator, Ms Read and Ms.Bavage and the Hospitality
students who provided the two course lunch.
ATTENTION- CHANGE IN COMPULSORY SPORT UNIFORM POLICY
In 2013 there will be a change in the uniform policy in regards to Physical Education practical
classes and students going out on sport days.
In 2013, the Red, Green and Yellow Staughton sports tops are no longer classed as correct
sports uniform, and students wearing these tops will be considered out of uniform.
Students are to be wearing the most recent sports top pictured above. The compulsory navy polo
with the grey strips is available to purchase from the uniform shop which is open Monday’s 8-
10am and Thursday’s 3pm-5pm.
Please note- New student sports shorts will also be available for purchase at an advised
date. These shorts will also need to be purchased as a part of the compulsory sports
uniform.
Uniform is very important to Staughton College, in demonstrating pride in our school. It is an
expectation that student’s turn up to Physical Education classes and sports days in full sports
uniform. We would ask for your cooperation in helping with our transition to the new uniform.
Monday saw some of our Year 9 students head out by bus to Harvester Technical College in
Sunshine for a tour of their very unusual buildings and grounds. It was a good opportunity for
these students to see the VCAL offered in a different way and in very different style classrooms.
The students, Miss Jowett and Mrs Woody really enjoyed their tour.
As part of the Staughton College approach to maintaining a supportive learning environment all
students are regularly taught and practice social behaviours which are conducive to a positive
school climate. As part of this approach students who exhibit the expected behaviours are at times
rewarded for their behaviour. On Wednesday the 5 th of December all year 7 students who have
attended each and every class during the week beginning the 26 th of November participated in a
range of incentive activities. The names of students who were eligible to participate in the
incentive reward program are:
Education Maintenance Allowance - information for parents currently receiving EMA
Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013:
From 2013, the Victorian Government states that its restructure of EMA will better target financial support to
families on lower incomes. Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible recipients at all year levels
up to age 16, with an additional increase for parents with students in Years Prep and 7 in recognition of the
additional costs at these transition points.
In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in secondary school (Year 8 up until the age of 16) will
receive an annual payment of $250.
The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA families has been discontinued as a separate payment
from 2013. However, additional funding has been incorporated into the EMA meaning that parents of children in
Prep and Year 7 will receive boosted EMA payments of $200 and $300 respectively in those years.
From 2013, the EMA will no longer be paid 50/50 between the parent and the school. The 50% school portion of
the EMA will no longer be paid to schools on behalf of parents. Although $62 million over four years will be
redirected to the State’s most needy schools to assist families on lower incomes*, some schools fear their will be a
funding gap. (*These funds will form part of the school Student Resource Packages to be allocated at the local level.)
New EMA payment option
From 2013, on the EMA application form you can choose to have your EMA payment;
Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection or
Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use towards
education expenses
Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your nominated bank account
The introduction of the new payment option to have the EMA payment
directed to the school provides parents with extra flexibility to assist with budgeting towards education expenses.
Contact our office for an EMA application form and to lodge your application. The closing date for EMA application
forms to be submitted to the school is 28 February 2013.
