CONSTRAINTS TO WIND TURBINE DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE SCARP LANDSCAPE TYPEThe following table considers both the landscape values and sensitivities, identified above, to indicate the constraints to wind turbinedevelopment within the Scarp landscape type.Table 5i.3: Summary Table indicating Constraints to Wind Turbine Development in the Scarp Landscape TypeSummary of LandscapeValuesSummary of SensitivitiesVisual Landscape CharacterConstraints to TurbineDevelopmentHighly valued for its dramaticlandform, extensive views andwealth of natural, cultural andrecreational features. The viewcorridor from the scarp topRidgeway is a particularlyvalued element.High, the prominent, elevated scarplandform, predominantly opencharacter and extensive views thatcan be obtained to and from the ridgeall contribute to the high visualsensitivity. Also sensitive is the strongvisual relationship between the scarptop archaeological sites and viewsfrom the Ridgeway National Trail.High, the scarp is a dramatic landformand a significant feature forming astrong recognisable skyline andhorizon. Further sensitive attributesinclude the archaeological featuresand their setting, woodland, chalkgrassland and parks/designedlandscapes. All of these elements arehighly sensitive to the intrusion of aprominent vertical structure andassociated infrastructure. Pylon lines orcabling would be particularly intrusivein relation to the distinctive ridge, steepslopes and coombes of the scarplandform.Highly constrainedNorth Wessex Downs AONB: Landscape Sensitivities 82Scarpand Constraints to Wind Turbine Development
