Jimmy RixArtist StatementI would like to highlight the importance drawing has on allart forms. There has been a lot of debate over recent timesabout drawing not being taught enough at art schools witha greater focus on conceptual ideology. For me, I wouldestimate drawing consists of 50 percent of my sculpturepractice and 50 percent spent on fabricating the work.“In the Beginning” relates to the first steps taken eachmorning which is to sharpen my pencil to begin drawing. This sometimes can take a while as locating a pencilsharpener can pose a problem. I thought I was getting quiteforgetful, not remembering where I had left it the day before.Until my three year old son showed a friend his pencil caseand his collection of pencil sharpeners. I realized it wasn’tmy memory at all!Artist BiographyJimmy Rix was born in 1971 and grew up on his family’s cropand cattle farm on Queensland’s fertile Darling Downs.
