Are these ever legit?Have you ever gotten a phone call from a companythat you have never heard of telling you thatyou’ve been “selected” to win a sweepstakes andreceive a boatload of money or some exotic trip?It seems strange as you don’t remember submittingyour name for a contest, but the idea of a bigpayout or sitting on a beach and sipping a fruitydrink starts to cloud your reasoning. You startthinking maybe this could be for real. Maybe yourluck has finally changed for the better? Guesswhat — nothing has changed, so hang up thephone and throw away the mail!Here is how these scams often work: The “company”tells someone that they have won the lotteryor sweepstakes, but in order to “collect” the prize,the person needs to pay some initial “fees” and“taxes.” The fee may only be nominal, which canencourage people to give it a try (it’s the “I’ll pay$20 if it means I could get $1 million” logic).Predictably, once the money is sent, the companyis never heard from again. The people runningthese scams can be so persuasive that even consumerswho know better sometimes fall prey.According to the Texas Attorney General’s office,which receives complaints regarding consumerscams, phony lotteries and sweepstakes stilldefraud consumers all the time. In fact, the AG’soffice launched a new public-awareness campaigncalled “Just Hang Up” in order to reach more consumerswho are in danger of falling for these typesof scams.The safest bet is to follow the AG’s advice andignore all of these offers. Be especially wary ofanyone that says you need to send in money inorder to receive your prize.
