Our qualifications range from short courses and 

Certificates, to Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas and Dual 

Diplomas. You also have the option to study on a face-to- 

face basis in the classroom, through workplace delivery or 

online. Many qualifications also offer part-time or fulltime

throughout South Brisbane and 

the surrounding area. 

Our four main campuses are 

Alexandra Hills (30 minutes from 

the city centre), Loganlea (40 

minutes from the city centre), Mt 

Gravatt (20 minutes from the city 

centre) and Yeronga (20 minutes 

from the city centre). We also 

operate a number of smaller

Articulation and Credit 

Transfers 

You can utilise Metropolitan South Institute 

of TAFE’s (MSIT) articulation and credit 

transfer arrangements. MSIT qualifications 

entitle you to receive credit for degree 

programs where a similar or linked degree 

is offered. Other TAFE qualifications can 

entitle you to entry into selected degree 

programs. 

Most diploma programs can earn you at 

least one year’s credit towards a degree. 

Some TAFE qualifications also have formal 

agreements that give you priority entry into 

degree programs. 

Upon completion of your MSIT program, 

you are qualified to work in the field that 

you have graduated in while continuing 

university studies. You can apply for credit 

at all universities and higher education 

providers. 

MSIT currently has more than 110 credit 

agreements in place for graduates of 

creative arts (including fashion, visual 

arts, screen and media), information 

and communication technology (ICT), 

business, health and community 

services, hospitality, events, horticulture 

and education. These specific credit 

agreements are offered through our

We have packaged a number of our 

diplomas as dual diplomas. These 

programs have been designed so that 

you can complete the course work for the 

extra qualifications in the same time it 

would normally take you to complete one

Studies in any Certificate III or IV, Diploma 

or Advanced Diploma programs at 

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE can 

also improve your Tertiary Entrance Rank. 

Please note that these scores are 

determined by QTAC. The way in which 

tertiary providers accept the rankings can 

vary between different institutions. MSIT 

advises students to consult the student 

counsellors.

MSIT Student Counsellors 

Pathways to university (both direct and via 

QTAC) should be discussed with MSIT’s 

student counsellors. These counsellors 

can suggest possible rank scores that 

QTAC will give students and they have 

the expertise to advise on how different 

institutions use those scores for university 

entrance. Student counsellors are 

available to MSIT students at no charge for 

career and educational counselling. MSIT 

counsellors are experienced professionals 

who assist students to achieve successful 

outcomes from vocational education and 

training. 

National Recognition/ 

Transfer Credit 

Under the principles of national 

recognition, MSIT will recognise a 

qualification that is valid under the AQF 

(Australian Qualifications Framework) 

issued by another registered training 

organisation. National recognition must 

be applied for using an ‘Application for 

Transfer Credit’ form available from our 

customer service centres or download 

from www.msit.tafe.qld.gov.au (refer to 

the publications section). Certified copies 

of your original grades/qualifications must 

be provided. There is no charge for this 

service.

Recognition of Prior Learning 

(RPL) 

At Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE 

we understand that you may already have 

developed many valuable skills through 

previous work or study. The RPL process 

enables the skills you have learned in the 

workplace and through life experience to 

be recognised formally, regardless of how, 

when or where the learning occurred. 

RPL also covers credit transfers and 

exemptions. A credit transfer is a credit 

for competency in an equivalent module 

already completed at a TAFE Queensland 

institute and may be automatically 

granted during the enrolment process. 

An exemption is credit for previous study 

completed outside of TAFE Queensland. 

Exemptions must be applied for using an 

Application for Advanced Standing form, 

available from Metropolitan South TAFE’s 

customer service centres.

What level do I need to study at? 

You can choose to study at a level which suits you depending on your current skills. 

Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas 

Get paraprofessional-level training, generally within one to two years of study (based on 

full-time status). Diploma programs may also provide you with a pathway to university – 

see the Articulation and Credit Transfers section for more information (Pg. 7). 

Certificate programs 

Certificate programs are offered at levels I, II, III or IV. These programs are ideal for 

professional development, skills enhancement or re-entry to the workforce. 

Workplace and study preparation 

Learn the study skills to kick-start your career or return to work or study after a long 

absence, through MSIT’s Adult Tertiary Preparation (ATP) and Language and Literacy 


Apprenticeships and Traineeships

CAMPUS FACIlITIES 

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE’s Mt Gravatt, 

Loganlea and Alexandra Hills campuses have all 

recently been given major upgrades, worth a total of 

$4.84 million. 

Fashion facilities have been revamped, while new 

patisserie machinery and kitchen decor have been 

provided for hospitality students. Classrooms, outdoor 

common areas, cafeterias, lifts and bathrooms have 

also been improved at our campuses. 

Other campus upgrades include refurbishments to the Hair 

and Beauty Services Centre, the College of English Language, 

the Transport and Logistics Centre, and the Health precincts for 

nursing. 

The Education Resource Production Unit has also been modernised 

with new machinery, along with a new fit-out for the print room.

Our Learning Centre staff are committed to

South Institute of TAFE Student Support

The library and eZone areas support

and use computers, audiovisual and copy

cater for students who are studying at

There are friendly, staffed canteens at our

Fees 

Some programs are funded by government 

and the fees charged to students are 

usually a very small part of the total cost 

of the program. In some cases, programs 

may be offered where some units of 

competency are government funded, while 

other units of competency may not be 

government funded. The fees displayed 

on enrolment forms include the total fees 

to be paid on enrolment, including any 

material-fees that may apply. Fees payable 

on non-government-funded programs are 

charged on a cost-recovery basis and 

NO fee exemptions apply. Governmentfunded 

program fees are set according 

to the Vocational Education Training and 

Employment (VETE) Regulation 2000 and 

are reviewed annually. Call 1300 657 613

Institute fees – on-campus 

delivery 

An annual (calendar) administrative charge 

of $35* is charged per student, consisting 

of: 

• Student ID 

• Information technology fee which 

entitles students to internet access in 

class and Learning Precincts.

correct at time of printing but is subject to 

change.

A late enrolment fee may be applied when 

you enrol after the commencement of 

classes. 

Student Contribution Fee 

exemptions 

An exemption of 60 per cent of the student 

contribution fee is available for: 

• Holders of Commonwealth Health Care 

and Pensioner Concession Cards and 

their partners and dependants named 

on the card (online validation with 

Centrelink will be checked at the time of 

enrolment) 

• Aborigines and/or Torres Strait 

Islanders 

• A student who has not completed Year 

12 and was, or will be, under 17 at the 

end of February in the year in which the 

unit is taken. 

Please note: It is your responsibility to 

check concession card eligibility with 

Centrelink prior to enrolment. Evidence will 

be required for age or other exemptions. 

NOTE: School-based apprentices/trainees are 

exempt from student contribution fees.

Payment of fees 

All fees are due and payable at the time 

of enrolment. Fees can be paid by cash, 

cheque (payable to Metropolitan South 

Institute of TAFE), EFTPOS, Money Order 

or Credit Card (Visa, MasterCard and 

American Express). If you are in receipt 

of a Centrelink payment you may be able 

to have your fees deducted automatically 

from your payment. Application can be 

made at a customer service centre.

Financial assistance 

Financial assistance may be available in 

the form of Austudy, Abstudy, Newstart, 

Jobstart and Youth Allowance. Further

Payment plan option 


If you are having difficulty meeting the full 

cost of the program at enrolment, it may be 

possible to negotiate a payment plan. Prior 

to enrolment, a Payment Plan Application 

form available from the Customer Service 

Centre must be completed. As you are 

entering into a credit agreement, a credit 

check will be performed on your credit 

history and if you are under 18 years of 

age this must be completed by a parent 

or guardian. A minimum of $75 (or 20% 

per cent) of the total cost of enrolment, 

whichever is the greater, is payable at the 

time of enrolment.

Vivienne Roma, a 50-something Inala resident and 

grandmother, has been inspired to change her future 

and consider starting her own catering business after 

graduating from an Indigenous Hospitality program at 

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE’s (MSIT) Loganlea 

campus. 

According to Vivienne, her outlook on life dramatically 

changed when she discovered how much she loved 

cooking in a busy commercial kitchen, planning healthy 

meals and creating dining experiences for customers. 

“Cooking is something I’m really passionate about and I 

loved every minute of the program. Learning more about 

food and cooking has now become my life,” Vivienne said. 

“I grew up on a mission where there wasn’t much 

opportunity. My father used to cook with bush tucker 

like kangaroo and wallaby, so making pastries in a 

commercial kitchen was a very different situation for me. 

“Now when I cook, I do it to create a meal and to 

experience food rather than cooking out of necessity. 

If my grandchildren can see me working hard, eating 

healthy and cooking good food, then I hope they might 

see me as a good example and do the same,” she said. 

Vivienne is now considering starting her own catering 

business with her younger sister, who also studied the 

same program at MSIT.

TRIUMPHS KEEP on 

CoMInG FoR ToVAH 

Fashion designer Tovah Cottle has taken out a string of 

awards and gained widespread industry recognition since 

graduating from Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE. 

The run of good form started in 2010 when Tovah took out 

the Brisbane Racing Carnival’s Fashions on the Field design 

competition at Doomben. 

Next on Tovah’s list of successes was her announcement as 

the Australian winner of the Triumph Inspiration Award. 

Her design, titled ‘Body Architecture’, incorporated separate 

lingerie pieces, boots and headwear made from white 

leather and silver sequins and included a layered, wing-like 

fixture. The win then took Tovah on to the international finals 

of the Inspiration Award in London. 

Institute Director Kaylene Harth congratulated Tovah on her 

commitment to completing an Advanced Diploma of Applied 

Fashion Design and Technology. 

“Tovah’s designs are exceptional and I’m thrilled to see her 

hard work rewarded,” Kaylene said.

dedicated to making the world a better place by passing on her passion for the 

environment to her students. 

Renee’s areas of expertise include sustainability, e-learning, animal care, wildlife 

management and conservation – topics that she says are crucial in restoring the 

health of the planet. 

Leading by example, Renee enjoys educating others about the importance 

of sustainability. She practises what she preaches in all aspects of her life, 

showing the rest of us how it’s done. 

“I live in a sustainable designed home on 10 acres. The house is powered by 

a stand-alone solar system which saves us money and helps minimise our 

emission output,” Renee said.

Other environmentally sustainable features of Renee’s 

property include passive solar design, insulation, rain

“My role as a teacher is an important part of educating 

and inspiring others to show support for animals and 

our natural world,” she said. 

“Becoming a TAFE teacher has enabled me to work 

with others who are interested in the animal care, 

conservation and sustainability industries.” 

Renee teaches students in a face-to-face classroom 

environment at the Alexandra Hills campus and also 

through online methods such as email, chat rooms 

and video calls, which are particularly useful for 

students with a disability or learning difficulty, or for 

those who live in remote locations. 

On top of her teaching responsibilities, Renee also 

mentors other staff on getting the most out of MSIT’s 

blended and online study programs, helping to 

provide students with the highest possible level of 

support and guidance. 

Renee was one of eight teachers from across 

Queensland recognised as a finalist in the VET 

Teacher/Trainer of the Year category in the 2011 

Queensland Training Awards.

In August 2009, at the age of 32, Scott Ellem completed a 

Diploma of Tourism at the Metropolitan South Institute of 

TAFE (MSIT) Mt Gravatt campus. 

While he studied, Scott worked full-time at Virgin Blue’s 

business travel lounge, so he needed a study program 

that fitted into his already busy lifestyle. 

Originally, Scott began studying his diploma at another 

TAFE, but said he found it difficult balancing work and 

study commitments – almost to the point of giving up. 

“I’m proud to say I persevered and re-enrolled at 

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE, where I completed 

my diploma and received credit for the study I’d done at 

the other institute,” Scott said. 

“The way MSIT structured its course and classes made it 

easier for me to handle my work and study commitments. 

“I also found the environment and the teachers very 

supportive,” he said. 

Scott still works at Virgin Blue and recently enrolled in a 

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at the Mt Gravatt 

campus, so he can one day teach at TAFE. 

His plan is to pass his knowledge and passion on to other 

students while maintaining an active, hands-on role 

within the travel industry.

Secure your place 

A deposit system to secure your place is 

available at the customer service centre all 

year and is refundable if you choose not to 

commence. 

Direct entry 

You can apply directly to Metropolitan 

South Institute of TAFE for all short 

programs, certificates, some full-time 

diplomas, part-time diplomas and fee-forservice 

programs (see the “Programs at a 

glance” guide on pages 58-61 for a list of 

entry methods for all programs). 

Direct entry enrolment options include: 

• In person: Visit the customer service 

centre at a campus near you (check 

out the campus locations on page 5). 

Payment can be made using credit 

card, cheque, money order, EFTPOS 

or cash. 

• Telephone: Credit card payments 

only on 1300 657 613. You can also 

secure or reserve your place by paying 

a deposit. 

• Mail: Post your enrolment details for 

payment by credit card, cheque or 

money order (payable to Metropolitan 

South Institute of TAFE) to PO Box

Applications for some full-time diploma 

programs must be made via the 

Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre 

(QTAC). For further information on QTAC

Costs 

TAFE students do not pay HECS fees 

and because programs are mostly 

Government subsidised, they are 

sometimes considerably less expensive 

than programs offered by other training 

providers. Costs depend on your chosen 

program of study. Once you have chosen 

a program of study, enrolment staff will 

be able to provide you with accurate cost 

information. 

Fee-for-service 

Fee-for-service programs are competitively 

priced but no fee exemptions apply. A layby 

option exists to prepay your program fees. 

Enrolment conditions 

Access to all classes is subject to: 

• sufficient enrolments in the class 

• prerequisites and other entry 

requirements being met 

• enrolment fees finalised. 


Students must satisfy the prerequisites 

or other entry requirements for their 

program of study as specified in the 

National Training Package. Students may 

also be selected via the QTAC Selection 

Process located at www.qtac.edu.au 

or in accordance with institute policies. 

Students under 15 years of age will require 

prior approval by the Institute Director. 

Students under 17 years of age must meet 

enrolment requirements as specified in the 

Education (General Provisions Act) 2006. 

Your enrolment may be refused if you have 

either outstanding fees or an overdue debt.

Am I eligible for a 

concession? 

Student Contribution fee exemptions are 

available for government-funded programs 

for: 

• Health Care and Pensioner 

Concession Card holders and 

Dependants issued under 

Commonwealth Law 

• Australian Aborigines and/or Torres 

Strait Islanders 

• Students under 17 as at the end of 

February in the year of study, who 

have not completed Year 12 (a copy of 

birth certificate is required) 

• Students under 18 as at end of 

February 28 in the year of study 

(Senior Studies QSA only - a copy of 

birth certificate is required). 

Financial support 

Centrelink provides assistance to eligible 

students under a variety of programs 

including: 

• Abstudy – for Indigenous Australians 

• Austudy – income support while you 

study 

• Youth Allowance – a means-tested 

payment for eligible persons, generally 

between the ages of 16 and 24 (certain 

age and circumstance exceptions 

apply) 

• Student Financial Supplement Scheme 

– you may be eligible for a $500 cash 

advance for specified TAFE vocational 

training. 

Centrelink performs regular checks on 

work/study performance. If you don’t meet 

the requirements while you are receiving a 

Centrelink allowance (such as attendance 

or performance obligations), you may have 

to repay all the allowances you received 

for that period. For further information

Productivity Places 

The Productivity Places Program is an 

Australian Government-funded program 

that may fully fund selected training for 

people who are looking for work. Eligible 

participants need to currently be looking 

for work, be an Australian Citizen or a 

permanent resident of Australia and be 

over the age of 15. Other eligibility criteria 

apply. Full-time students and people who 

are self-employed are not eligible for the 

program. Eligible candidates can gain a 

new qualification or upgrade an existing
