Alexandra Hills (30 minutes from

Articulation and Credit
Transfers
You can utilise Metropolitan South Institute
of TAFE’s (MSIT) articulation and credit
transfer arrangements. MSIT qualifications
entitle you to receive credit for degree
programs where a similar or linked degree
is offered. Other TAFE qualifications can
entitle you to entry into selected degree
programs.
Most diploma programs can earn you at
least one year’s credit towards a degree.
Some TAFE qualifications also have formal
agreements that give you priority entry into
degree programs.
Upon completion of your MSIT program,
you are qualified to work in the field that
you have graduated in while continuing
university studies. You can apply for credit
at all universities and higher education
providers.
MSIT currently has more than 110 credit
agreements in place for graduates of
creative arts (including fashion, visual
arts, screen and media), information
and communication technology (ICT),
business, health and community
services, hospitality, events, horticulture
and education. These specific credit
agreements are offered through our

you can complete the course work for the
extra qualifications in the same time it
would normally take you to complete one

also improve your Tertiary Entrance Rank.
Please note that these scores are
determined by QTAC. The way in which
tertiary providers accept the rankings can
vary between different institutions. MSIT

MSIT Student Counsellors
Pathways to university (both direct and via
QTAC) should be discussed with MSIT’s
student counsellors. These counsellors
can suggest possible rank scores that
QTAC will give students and they have
the expertise to advise on how different
institutions use those scores for university
entrance. Student counsellors are
available to MSIT students at no charge for
career and educational counselling. MSIT
counsellors are experienced professionals
who assist students to achieve successful
outcomes from vocational education and
training.
National Recognition/
Transfer Credit

Under the principles of national
recognition, MSIT will recognise a
qualification that is valid under the AQF
(Australian Qualifications Framework)
issued by another registered training
organisation. National recognition must
be applied for using an ‘Application for
Transfer Credit’ form available from our
customer service centres or download
from www.msit.tafe.qld.gov.au (refer to
the publications section). Certified copies
of your original grades/qualifications must
be provided. There is no charge for this
service.

Recognition of Prior Learning
(RPL)
At Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE
we understand that you may already have
developed many valuable skills through
previous work or study. The RPL process
enables the skills you have learned in the
workplace and through life experience to
be recognised formally, regardless of how,
when or where the learning occurred.
RPL also covers credit transfers and
exemptions. A credit transfer is a credit
for competency in an equivalent module
already completed at a TAFE Queensland
institute and may be automatically
granted during the enrolment process.
An exemption is credit for previous study
completed outside of TAFE Queensland.
Exemptions must be applied for using an
Application for Advanced Standing form,
available from Metropolitan South TAFE’s
customer service centres.

What level do I need to study at?
Get there faster
You can choose to study at a level which suits you depending on your current skills.
Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas
Get paraprofessional-level training, generally within one to two years of study (based on
full-time status). Diploma programs may also provide you with a pathway to university –
see the Articulation and Credit Transfers section for more information (Pg. 6).
Certificate programs
Certificate programs are offered at levels I, II, III or IV. These programs are ideal for
professional development, skills enhancement or re-entry to the workforce.
Workplace and study preparation
Learn the study skills to kick-start your career or return to work or study after a long
absence, through MSIT’s Adult Tertiary Preparation (ATP) and Language and Literacy
programs.
Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE offers a range of programs which can be
customised to suit individuals and the workplace. MSIT also offers quality training

Our Learning Centre staff are committed to

The library and eZone areas support
your information needs with extensive
collections of print, audiovisual, online
and equipment resources. A range
of assistance is available including

and use computers, audiovisual and copy
facilities.
Library opening times are flexible and
cater for students who are studying at
night or on the weekend.

There are friendly, staffed canteens at our

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE has
two fully operational training restaurants
open to the public at select times for lunch
and dinner. Students assist in operating
the restaurants, which offer a variety of
high-quality and affordable meals and

Fees
Some programs are funded by government
and the fees charged to students are
usually a very small part of the total cost
of the program. In some cases, programs
may be offered where some units of
competency are government funded, while
other units of competency may not be
government funded. The fees displayed
on enrolment forms include the total fees
to be paid on enrolment, including any
material-fees that may apply. Fees payable
on non-government-funded programs are
charged on a cost-recovery basis and
NO fee exemptions apply. Governmentfunded
program fees are set according
to the Vocational Education Training and
Employment (VETE) Regulation 2000 and
are reviewed annually. Call 1300 657 613

An annual (calendar) administrative charge
of $35* is charged per student, consisting
of:
• Student ID
• Information technology fee which
entitles students to internet access in
class and Learning Precincts.

A late enrolment fee may be applied when
you enrol after the commencement of
classes.
Student Contribution Fee
exemptions
An exemption of 60 per cent of the student
contribution fee is available for:
• Holders of Commonwealth Health Care
and Pensioner Concession Cards and
their partners and dependants named
on the card (online validation with
Centrelink will be checked at the time of
enrolment)
• Aborigines and/or Torres Strait
Islanders
• A student who has not completed Year
12 and was, or will be, under 17 at the
end of February in the year in which the
unit is taken.
Please note: It is your responsibility to
check concession card eligibility with
Centrelink prior to enrolment. Evidence will
be required for age or other exemptions.
NOTE: School-based apprentices/trainees are
exempt from student contribution fees.

Payment of fees
All fees are due and payable at the time
of enrolment. Fees can be paid by cash,
cheque (payable to Metropolitan South
Institute of TAFE), EFTPOS, Money Order
or Credit Card (Visa, MasterCard and
American Express). If you are in receipt
of a Centrelink payment you may be able
to have your fees deducted automatically
from your payment. Application can be
made at a customer service centre.

If you are having difficulty meeting the full
cost of the program at enrolment, it may be
possible to negotiate a payment plan. Prior
to enrolment, a Payment Plan Application
form available from the Customer Service
Centre must be completed. As you are
entering into a credit agreement, a credit
check will be performed on your credit
history and if you are under 18 years of
age this must be completed by a parent
or guardian. A minimum of $75 (or 20%
per cent) of the total cost of enrolment,
whichever is the greater, is payable at the
time of enrolment.

Why choose this program?
This practical program is for people
interested in developing management and
practical treatment skills in beauty therapy.
Successful students will gain a beauty
therapist qualification and managerial skills
in beauty services. This program covers
health, hygiene and safety, communication,
retailing and merchandising, skin biology,
anatomy and physiology of body systems,
cosmetic chemistry, nutrition, manicures,
pedicures, waxing and makeup. Certificate
IV in Beauty Therapy is embedded in
this qualification. Students receive two
qualifications when they complete the
diploma, or can exit after completing
Certificate IV.

These courses are ideal for experienced
therapists wanting to expand their industry

Hot Stone Therapy, Brazilian Waxing,
Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Makeup.
These courses are also a first step for
those looking to undertake the Diploma of
Beauty Therapy and gain employment in
the industry.

Salon Assistant or full-time apprenticeship.
Why choose this program?
This program enables students to gain
introductory skills and knowledge for
entry-level employment in the hairdressing
industry. The skills acquired will enable
students to gain 6 months credit towards a
Hairdressing Apprenticeship (Certificate III)
or a full-time Certificate III in Hairdressing.
Students gain practical skills to perform
varied activities in a live salon, including
application treatments, communication
techniques, product knowledge, basic
styling skills, head and shoulder massage,
as well as receiving and directing clients.

apprenticeship you must be indentured to an

Technical Advisor.

The Certificate III in Hairdressing will
provide students with the knowledge, skills
and standards to work in a professional
capacity in hair fashion. During this
practical program, students will learn how
to dress and style hair; cut, colour, perm
and relax hair; diagnose and treat hair and
scalp conditions and perform live salon
work. An apprenticeship is required to
complete the trade certificate. If a student
is over the age of 21 they are eligible to sit
a trade test to gain full trade qualifications.

Professional Skill Sets in Hairdressing
have been designed for experienced
hair stylists who wish to expand and
update their skills, without taking

These short programs cover specialist
services, including advanced haircutting,
hair design, hair colouring, complex
colour correction, hair extensions,
chemical reformation and the provision
of technical leadership, training and
support to colleagues. These skill sets

The Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy facilities at Metropolitan South
Institute of TAFE’s (MSIT) Loganlea campus have experienced their own
makeover, with recent refurbishments providing 400 students access
to a state-of-the-art, world-class learning environment.
MSIT Education Manager for Hairdressing and Beauty, Neal McCann,
said the new training facilities replicate the high standard of working
environments within today’s hair and beauty industries.
“Potential employers are assured our new facilities provide the best
possible training and real work experience that students need in order
to hit the ground running when they enter the workforce,” Neal said.

A deposit system to secure your place is
available at the customer service centre all
year and is refundable if you choose not to
commence.
Direct entry
You can apply directly to Metropolitan
South Institute of TAFE for all short
programs, certificates, some full-time
diplomas, part-time diplomas and fee-forservice
programs.
Direct entry enrolment options include:
• In person: Visit the customer service
centre at a campus near you (check
out the campus locations on page 4).
Payment can be made using credit
card, cheque, money order, EFTPOS
or cash.
• Telephone: Credit card payments
only on 1300 657 613. You can also
secure or reserve your place by paying
a deposit.
• Mail: Post your enrolment details for
payment by credit card, cheque or
money order (payable to Metropolitan
South Institute of TAFE) to PO Box
2614, Mansfield, Queensland 4122.
• Fax: Credit card payments only to
(07) 3215 1618.
QTAC entry
Applications for some full-time diploma
programs must be made via the
Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre

Costs
TAFE students do not pay HECS fees
and because programs are mostly
Government subsidised, they are
sometimes considerably less expensive
than programs offered by other training
providers. Costs depend on your chosen
program of study. Once you have chosen
a program of study, enrolment staff will
be able to provide you with accurate cost
information.
Fee-for-service
Fee-for-service programs are competitively
priced but no fee exemptions apply. A layby
option exists to prepay your program fees.
Enrolment conditions
Access to all classes is subject to:
• sufficient enrolments in the class
• prerequisites and other entry
requirements being met
• enrolment fees finalised.

Students must satisfy the prerequisites
or other entry requirements for their
program of study as specified in the
National Training Package. Students may
also be selected via the QTAC Selection
Process located at www.qtac.edu.au
or in accordance with institute policies.
Students under 15 years of age will require
prior approval by the Institute Director.
Students under 17 years of age must meet
enrolment requirements as specified in the
Education (General Provisions Act) 2006.
Your enrolment may be refused if you have
either outstanding fees or an overdue debt.

Am I eligible for a
concession?
Student Contribution fee exemptions are
available for government-funded programs
for:
• Health Care and Pensioner
Concession Card holders and
Dependants issued under
Commonwealth Law
• Australian Aborigines and/or Torres
Strait Islanders
• Students under 17 as at the end of
February in the year of study, who
have not completed Year 12 (a copy of
birth certificate is required)
• Students under 18 as at end of
February 28 in the year of study
(Senior Studies QSA only - a copy of
birth certificate is required).
Financial support
Centrelink provides assistance to eligible
students under a variety of programs
including:
• Abstudy – for Indigenous Australians
• Austudy – income support while you
study
• Youth Allowance – a means-tested
payment for eligible persons, generally
between the ages of 16 and 24 (certain
age and circumstance exceptions
apply)
• Student Financial Supplement Scheme
– you may be eligible for a $500 cash
advance for specified TAFE vocational
training.
Centrelink performs regular checks on
work/study performance. If you don’t meet
the requirements while you are receiving a
Centrelink allowance (such as attendance
or performance obligations), you may have
to repay all the allowances you received
for that period. For further information

Productivity Places
The Productivity Places Program is an
Australian Government-funded program
that may fully fund selected training for
people who are looking for work. Eligible
participants need to currently be looking
for work, be an Australian Citizen or a
permanent resident of Australia and be
over the age of 15. Other eligibility criteria
apply. Full-time students and people who
are self-employed are not eligible for the
program. Eligible candidates can gain a
new qualification or upgrade an existing
qualification.
