Abernethy Physical Education CenterThe Julius W. Abernethy Physical Education Center, home of <strong>Catawba</strong>’s basketball teams, is one of the finest on-campus athleticfacilities in the state of North Carolina. It was named after the late Julius W. Abernethy of Newton, N.C., and was dedicated onSeptember 26, 1970. Basketball games are played in the center’s Goodman Gymnasium, named in honor of Enoch A. Goodman ofSalisbury. In October of 2002, the floor was named in honor of former head coach, Sam Moir, who guided <strong>Catawba</strong> to 546 wins over34 seasons.The Indians, under head coach Sam Moir, properly opened the new facility with a 120-82 triumph over the visiting Pioneers ofTusculum <strong>College</strong> on November 27, 1970. Since that game, <strong>Catawba</strong> basketball teams have compiled an impressive 437-171 recordfor homes games, for a winning percentage of .717. The Tribe has recorded two 23-game home winning streaks in the past six years.The building, which cost more than $1.8 million to build, has a seating capacity of 3,500 for basketball, and now has a value ofabout $5 million. A beautiful maple hardwood playing surface was installed in December 1990. The facility is also used extensivelyfor intercollegiate volleyball, student activities, civic events, concerts and various athletic camps during the summer months.The <strong>College</strong>’s Athletic and Physical Education offices, as well as classrooms, are located on the upper level. Situated on the lowerlevel is the Allen S. Bill Haggerty - Assistant CoachBill Haggerty is entering his 26th season as an assistant coach for the <strong>Catawba</strong> men’s basketballteam. In addition to his duties under coach Baker, Haggerty assists in the coorrdination and promotionof <strong>Catawba</strong>’s summer basketball camps, and has been active in securing basketball game sponsorships.Haggerty also serves as head coach for the <strong>Catawba</strong> cross country teams. Twice he hasguided the men to a tie for second place and has had a runner qualify for the NCAA II Nationals fourtimes. He is the first <strong>Catawba</strong> coach to be associated with two programs involved in NCAA Regionalsin the same year, as the men’s basketball team also made the NCAAs in 2000-01.Prior to his current position, Haggerty coached the women’sbasketball team at <strong>Catawba</strong> (1984-87), turning a near-winless situationinto a respectable program. Haggerty’s best year with theLady Indians was 1985-86, when he led <strong>Catawba</strong> to a 17-15record, setting 30 school records in the process. He joined coachSam Moir on the men’s basketball staff in July 1987. A 1979 <strong>Catawba</strong> graduate, Haggerty took thewomen’s basketball position at <strong>Catawba</strong> after serving as recreation director for JeffersonTownship, NJ. He was also assistant coach in basketball, football and softball at JeffersonTownship High School. He was born in New York City’s Bronx, but his family moved to OakRidge, NJ, during his childhood. Haggerty graduated form Jefferson Township High School, wherehe was a runner on a state championship cross country team and played basketball. He laterreturned to his former school to coach another cross country state champion.Before transferring to <strong>Catawba</strong>, Haggerty attended Morris County Community <strong>College</strong> in NewJersey, where he also ran cross country and earned All-America honors. He ran in numerousmarathons, including Boston and New York City. He has returned to his alma mater after fouryear of playing professional basketball since his graduation.In 2011, he coached the junior varsity at HeritageHigh School to a 16-2 mark.Graves graduated from <strong>Catawba</strong> in 2007 with a degree in sports management.While at <strong>Catawba</strong>, Graves was a three-time All-South Atlantic Conference performerand was named All-Southeast Region as a senior. As a freshman he wasnamed to the SAC All-Tournament squad in helping the Indians to the title.<strong>Catawba</strong> advanced to the NCAA II Regionals in three of Graves’ four seasonsand he helped the team to conference championships during his sophomore andsenior seasons. Graves became a 1,000 point scorer in his career, currently ranking22nd with 1,387 points. He stands third all-time with 600 assists and sharesthe school mark with 15 assists in one game. Graves produced the second highestassist season as a senior with 203. He also ranks third all-time in steals.After graduation, Graves played in Germany with the Grevenbroich Elephantsand helped the team move from the Regional League to the 2nd Division. He wasnamed All-League both years. Graves also spent a year with the Vermont FrostHeaves of the PBL and most recently was team MVP in 2011-12 with the VirginiaTrue Hope Trailblazers.Graves, a native of Newport News, VA, currently resides in Salisbury. As an all-sports conference,the league has grown into one of thepremier small-college athletic conferences inthe nation.The 1993-94 year was extremely special in that the conferencebecame fully affiliated with the NCAA Division IIand is now eligible for national championships opportunitiesin all of its 14 sponsored sports.NCAA DIVISION IIThe National Collegiate AthleticAssociation is the organization through whichthe nation’s colleges and universities speakand act on athletic matters at the national level.It is a voluntary association of more than 1,000institutions, conferences, organizations and individualsdevoted to the sound administration of intercollegiateathletics.
