The accolades recogniseenvironmental issues th<strong>at</strong> are being tackledincluding:■ Energy conserv<strong>at</strong>ion■ W<strong>at</strong>er conserv<strong>at</strong>ion■ Recycling■ Biodiversity■ Improving buildings and groundsProject descriptionBuilding on their current sustainability work aspart of the One World <strong>School</strong>’s programme,<strong>Roe</strong> <strong>Green</strong> Junior <strong>School</strong> is working tosuccessfully develop a whole school approachto sustainability. In the process the schoolhopes to achieve Eco <strong>School</strong>’s <strong>Green</strong> Flagaward.The school joined One World <strong>School</strong>s inSeptember 2009 and since then have <strong>for</strong>medthe Eco Warriors committee who have workedhard to design an eco-code to promote goodgreen behaviour <strong>at</strong> the school:GREENERGet real and use less w<strong>at</strong>erReduce, reuse and recycleElectricity is not free! So switch it off!Encourage fantastic cre<strong>at</strong>ures and amazingflowers to our school groundsNever <strong>for</strong>get, not to litter in our school groundsEvergreen is our eco buildingRESPECT OUR SCHOOLThere will be a whole school eco day in January2010 where pupils will take part in exciting andcre<strong>at</strong>ive environmental activities and undertakean environmental assessment of the school.Evergreen - A zero-carbon buildingJanuary 2010 will see the opening of Evergreen,the school’s sustainably constructed ecobuilding.Evergreen is a zero-carbon learningcentre where the total carbon footprint of thebuilding during its construction and oper<strong>at</strong>ion iszero.The free-standing building is a selfpowered,zero carbon emissions learning andteaching space. It will be the focus of much ofthe schools community based environmentalactivities.In the development of this eco-building pupilswere consulted and took part in the designprocess. Many of Evergreen’s fe<strong>at</strong>ures aredrawn from in-depth student consult<strong>at</strong>ionincluding:■ Sustainable prefabric<strong>at</strong>ed solid timber walls,floor and roof panels■ Renewable wind and solar energy■ An under floor he<strong>at</strong>ing system powered bygeothermal energy■ Rainw<strong>at</strong>er collection <strong>for</strong> flushing the toilets■ Large roof lights windows positioned <strong>for</strong>maximum levels of n<strong>at</strong>ural daylight■ Real-time public display panels to showenergy consumption, gener<strong>at</strong>ion and w<strong>at</strong>ercollection.One World <strong>School</strong> Objectives■ Achieve an Eco-<strong>School</strong>s <strong>Green</strong> Flag award■ Work to develop a whole school approachto sustainability■ Identify funding to support tree planting <strong>at</strong>the back of the school■ To support the development and promotionof the school and the Evergreen hub as anexemplar model of sustainability within thecommunityProject Partners<strong>Roe</strong> <strong>Green</strong> Junior <strong>School</strong>Princes AvenueBrentLondonNW9 9JL
