elcome welcome welcome welcome welcome welWe l c o m eDear Friends:Even though the days started getting shorter inJune, somehow it doesn’t seem noticeable untilabout the middle of September, well after thekids have returned to school. Now, we’re barrelingheadlong toward the shortest of days, 21December, when the sun, at its lowest angle, onlystays on the job for 9:56. Somehow, we’re eithergoing to work, or coming home from work, inthe dark, maybe both. It makes gardening on a“work day” difficult (unless you’ve got a miner’slamp, I guess). So we cram in what we can over the weekend, and it just doesn’t seem fair that now that theweather is amenable to outdoor work – and wearingwool sweaters – the light is so limited. Soilpreparation, dividing, planting, fertilizing, rakingleaves, turning the compost, the timing is so rightfor all of this, but we can’t get too waylaid withany one project. We do some of each thing onour list, to try to spread out the day, just enoughof each thing we planned to get the satisfactionof multi-tasking. Before we know it, the sun hasslipped away and we can concentrate on makinga new list. For tomorrow. Or next weekend. Ornext year.As the year winds down, all of us here at TheGardens want to thank our donors, membersand volunteers for the success of our fall events, and, similarly, for all our programs and activitiesthroughout the past year. Our strength is rootedin the individuals, businesses, foundations andcommunities that support us, and year after yearthey make it possible to deliver our mission ofeducating people about plants, gardens and theenvironment.Wishing you and yours asafe and healthy season,Fred SpicerExecutive DirectorSaveth eDateAlabama Design &CraftsmenDistrict III Garden ClubFine Crafts ClassicNovember 14,10 a.m.–5 p.m.November 15,11 a.m.–5 p.m.Red Mountain GardenClub Greenery SaleDecember 29 a.m.–1 p.m.HollyDay MagicDecember 3 & 44–6 p.m.VolunteerAppreciationLuncheonDecember 8Shades ValleyCouncil ChristmasFlower ShowDecember 10,1–5 pm.December 11,9 a.m.–3 p.m.45th AnnualMember DinnerJanuary 217 p.m.The Gardens Releases Education ReportThe Gardens’ Education Department presentsdata on program participation that captures theactivities of each academic year. tures donations tributes membership planned giving corporaDe ve l o p m e n tBefore 2009Slips Away…The year 2009 will soon be history, but there is stilltime to take steps and implement plans that willmake life better for you and others in the future andthat can directly benefit The Gardens.1. Review your estate plans. Changes in yourfamily situation and in the value of your stocks andreal estate may require revisions to your will, livingtrust or beneficiary designations on life insurance,IRAs and other arrangements. Consider a bequestto Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens to helpensure that The Gardens and its educational programswill thrive for years to come. Those who make plannedgifts to The Gardens become members of our PerennialSociety.5Sound Strategiesfor Year-End Giving:1. Write a check to Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Everydollar of your contribution will be tax-deductible, if you itemize yourdeductions, up to 50% of your gross income. And every dollar will help TheGardens stay green and continue to teach people about plants, nature and theenvironment.2. Sell stocks that have decreased in value and contribute the proceedsto Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. You’ll create both a capitalloss deduction and a charitable deduction that benefits the whole community.3. Contribute stocks that have increased in value. You’ll avoid all capitalgains taxes and can deduct your cost plus all appreciation if you have ownedthe stocks for more than one year…and you will help The Gardens.4. Give a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for familysecurity, but will help to secure the future of The Gardens.5. If you are over age 70 ½, ask your IRA custodian to make a tax-free“qualified charitable distribution” to Friends of Birmingham BotanicalGardens. You will be a friend indeed!2. Add to your retirement nest egg. If you havean IRA, 401(k) plan or other retirement account, contribute the maximum allowable before year’send ($16,500 for a 401 (k) plan, plus a catch-upamount of $5,500 for workers over age 50). If youremployer matches part of your savings, pay at leastthat amount before year’s end.3. Fine-tune your portfolio. Consider sellingsecurities that have gone down in value and use yourcapital losses to offset any capital gains from the saleof profitable investments. Losses that don’t offsetgains can be deducted against ordinary income up to$3,000, and excess losses can be deducted in futureyears. Wait at least 30 days before buying back stockor your deduction will be postponed.4. Make a gift to Friends of Birmingham BotanicalGardens. Your gift is needed now, more than everbefore, and a charitable deduction will reduce your2009 taxes if you itemize. (See right). When I finally took a look at whatwas happening, I noticed that I was only photographing when Iwas traveling and that my travels were becoming more and moreinfrequent. Realizing the need to pick up the camera with no tripson the horizon, I spent $499 on the best lens I have ever purchased,a 105 micro (a fixed focal length lens with a very shallow depth offield). It was like a new passport and a ticket around the world. ps information tips information tips information tGa r d e n i n gGood Things Growing…In The GardensParrotia persica, parrotia or Persian ironwood,is an unfamiliar tree to most gardeners. Itsuffers – many great plants do – from relativeanonymity because it lacks a singular featuresuch as an exuberant flowers, cherry-red berries,or screaming fall color. Its charms may be toosubtle for many to notice.Parrotia’s red flowers are borne in late winter, but are small, odorless and apetalous, unlike theircousins’ the witchhazels. The “showy’ parts arethe ¼” long stamens, interesting up close, butvirtually invisible when compared to camellias, which flower at the same time. Fruits are smallbrown capsules, ornamentally unimportant.Leaves are a handsome, glossy dark green, ovate, with a scalloped margin; the texture is medium.Reddish tones are apparent at leaf-out. Withcooler weather, shades of purple and burgundybegin to dominate, eventually giving way to orangeand yellow; leaves hold late into the season, a few(brown and crispy) remain on the tree throughwinter. Since most are seed-grown, the fall coloris variable but usually very nice. In a nursery, nextto glowing autumn stars like Japanese maples, parrotia would likely seem unremarkable. In youth, parrotia shows an upright habit, typicallysingle-trunked but with several to numeroussinuous leaders. With age, strong horizontal sidebranches develop, creating a habit that is about as wide as high (to about 40’ after 25 years). It is easily pruned up in youth to allow under-plantingor headroom (‘Vanessa’ is reliably narrow). Noble oldspecimens (60’+) develop amazing character as theupright branches often fuse together (inosculate) andthe bark exfoliates in jigsaw-puzzle fashion. Alas, thisrequires time; it’s not instantly gratifying like a riverbirch. The short trunk and numerous, sinuous, uprightbranches are typical for this species.Parrotia persica, next to the Crape Myrtle Garden, withbeautiful dark green summer leaves; the horizontal linesare just becoming evident on this young specimen.Fall color of parrotia shows lots of orange and yellowtones in this late November image.Parrotia is tough, pest-free and undemanding, toleratingheat, humidity, dry urban soils and sunny, exposedconditions with aplomb. With its understated beauty, itwill (sadly) never be a popular plant. But it is magnificent, nevertheless, and deserves wider use.For more information on Parrotia persica, please go towww.bbgardens.org.6Gardening Tipsfor November & DecemberNov e m b e r• SHRUBS – Plant Shrubs, trees, and vines.• LAWNS – Some owners like lawn paints.Have you thought about having a greenlawn this winter?
