INTERIOR
FRAMING
OVERVIEW
Dietrich Metal Framing interior
framing products are used in a variety
of interior, nonload-bearing construction
applications. The most
common uses of nonload-bearing
or nonstructural metal framing are
partition walls, ceilings and column
fireproofing in low-rise, mid-rise,
high-rise, educational, institutional
and multi-use commercial structures.
Nonload-bearing framing is
also used in residential applications
including partition framing and
basement finishing. Metal framing is
required in most commercial structures
because it is noncombustible
and does not add fuel to the fire.
Interior framing components are
manufactured from corrosion resistant
galvanized steel that offers significant
protection from the elements.
In addition these framing
members are precision manufactured
to exacting tolerances that
provide the framework for superior
construction.
Dietrich Metal Framing offers an
extensive selection of interior framing
products including studs and
tracks, furring and resilient channels,
deflection products, corner
angles and backing plates.
Interior (Drywall)
Nonload-Bearing Framing
Dietrich Metal Framing’s nonload-bearing, nonstructural
or interior framing metal studs and
tracks are C-shaped channels, roll-formed from
corrosion resistant, galvanized steel. These channels
are assembled to provide efficient, low cost
framing for partition walls, ceilings and column
fireproofing. Gypsum wallboard, veneer plaster
or traditional lath and plaster is applied to the
metal framing to complete the wall assembly. These assemblies are nonload-bearing,
nonstructural wall systems that support gypsum panel construction. They are not
designed to carry an axial load. Most nonload-bearing, nonstructural walls are constructed
using 25 gauge (18 mils) or 20 gauge (30 mils) stud and track. In addition,
22 gauge (27 mils) while less common, is also available.
Dietrich Metal Studs are available in 1-5/8" 2-1/2", 3-1/2", 3-5/8", 4", 5-1/2" and 6"
widths or web depth. All interior studs have flanges or faces that are knurled for
quick screw attachment of drywall or plaster facing materials. Knurling grabs the
screw point to prevent riding (walking) or paper tears. Studs may be spaced at 12",
16" or 24" on-center based on wall height. Wall height, stud spacing, framing condition,
deflection limitations and lateral load are all factors that must be considered in
determining the correct size and gauge of the applicable product.
Dietrich Metal Track (or runner) is available in corresponding sizes and is offered in
a variety of leg heights including 1", 1-1/4", 2" and 3" legs. The 1-1/4" leg track is the
industry standard. Additionally, 25 gauge drywall track is available with a hemmed or
safety edge in certain regions. This product (referred to as hemmed track) has a 180˚
bend rolled into the exposed edge of the leg to create a smooth, burr-free edge for
safer handling. Track is used to align and secure studs to floors and ceilings, and is
also used in conjunction with studs for constructing openings, headers and sills.
Metal studs are twisted into top and bottom track and typically screw attached using
7/16" pan head framing screws.
Like most products, drywall studs and track can be purchased in stock lengths, or
custom ordered to match specific job requirements. This flexibility allows the end
user to more efficiently control labor costs at the jobsite.
Deflection
Track Systems
Deflection products and
systems are used in wall
assemblies that are subjected
to deflection
including seismic disturbances,
foundation settling, and normal head-of-wall
compression. Deflection products allow for vertical movement
while maintaining wall integrity and fire protection.
A variety of deflection products can be used including:
■ SLP-TRK* Slotted Track.
■ Long Leg Deflection Track with Spazzer ®
bridging bar.
■ Long Leg Track with U-Channel and
EasyClip U-Series Clips.
■ Double Track (Overtrack) System.
■ Fast Top Clip with Long Leg Deflection Track.
A special benefit of the SLP-TRK ® slotted track is that it
attaches directly to the under side of roof decks or floor/ceiling
assemblies, eliminating the need for special cutting or
ship laps. Firestop caulking or spray applied fireproofing is
required to achieve fire-rated performance. The SLP-TRK ® ‚
system has been approved for use by ICBO, the City of Los
Angeles, the Office of State Wide Health Planning and
Development (OSHPD) for California, and New York City.
Framing
Assemblies
Dietrich Metal Framing offers an extensive array of drywall
framing products used in various framing conditions and
assemblies. Some of the more common applications include
wall furring, ceiling and soffit construction, sound control
and a host of other supporting partition wall products.
All of these components are manufactured to the highest
quality standards. They complement the core stud and track
product lines providing the most effective means to a finished
assembly.
Framing
Products for
bridging/
bracing
Bridging and bracing of
interior nonload-bearing
framing can be achieved through various methods.
Three of the more common methods are:
■ 9200 Spazzer ® Bar
■ U-Channel and EasyClip U-Series Support Clips
■ Block and Strap
The purpose of bridging is to provide resistance to lateral
and torsional movement of the stud assembly. Bridging is
normally required when:
■ Wall sheathing does not extend to the
underside of the ceiling deck.
■ Walls are only sheathed on one side.
■ It is necessary to maintain the integrity of the
framework during construction.
■ To brace studs when using Long Leg
Deflection Track.
■ When required by certain fire-rated assemblies.
Drywall Nonload-Bearing Studs (ST-Series )
24
Low-cost, noncombustible framing for partition
walls, ceilings and column fireproofing.
Drywall or (Interior) studs are used
in nonload-, nonstructural-bearing
wall systems that support gypsum
panel construction. Drywall metal
studs are available in 25, 22 and 20
gauge. Wall height, stud spacing,
deflection limitations and lateral load are all criteria used to
determine the proper gauge. Studs are available in stock and
Drywall (Nonstructural) Studs (ST-Series )
custom lengths. Metal studs are twisted into top and bottom
track and either friction fit, crimped or screw attached at 12",
16" or 24" on center spacing.
In contrast to wood studs, metal studs will not warp, twist
or bow, resulting in straighter walls free from cracks and
nail pops. Metal studs are impervious to insects, mold
and rot. They are noncombustible and will not add fuel
to a fire.
Limiting Heights
30
Interior, Nonstructural, Composite Limiting Heights
Interior nonload-bearing partitions are not designed to carry axial loads. Limiting heights are based on stress or deflection limits for
given lateral loads. Height limitations depend on the gauge of the steel used, dimensions of the stud, stud spacing and the allowable
deflection limit. The composite limiting heights include the contribution of the gypsum wallboard sheathing on both sides of the wall.
SLP-TRK ® Slotted Track (BDTK)
32
Most cost-effective, positively attached
fire-rated deflection system.
It’s a real challenge meeting head-of-wall codes for fire stop and
life safety while maintaining the ability to absorb vertical
movement in low-, mid- and high-rise buildings. SLP-TRK* slotted
track is the solution.
SLP-TRK ® slotted track provides a positive attachment for wall
strength and allows for vertical movement. Movement caused by
normal head-of-wall and floor extension or compression is
absorbed by SLP-TRK ® slotted track to prevent damage to the
wall assembly.
SLP-TRK ® slotted track integrates smoothly with a variety of wall
installation systems and is extremely user-friendly, as well as
economical. The simple design and easy installation reduces the
cost of materials and labor.
SLP-TRK ® slotted track systems comply with the toughest code
requirements in the country, if not the world. It’s been tested
with a variety of leading fire-stop products and has outperformed
the requirements of stringent fire and hose stream testing ASTM
E-119, ASTM E-814. SLP-TRK also has met and exceeded the latest
seismic cycling standards found in UL2079 and ASTM 1966.
Rapidly installed prenotched, prespaced
interior deflection system that saves time
and eliminates materials.
■ Eliminates high material cost of custom-made head tracks.
■ Requires only a single generic Deep Leg track to provide deflection.
■ Facilitates sprayable Intumescent/Elastomeric firestops.
■ Eliminates stud spacing layout at deck.
■ Improves drywall hanging since bow is removed from tall studs.
■ Automatically positions and rigidly holds studs on 16”
or 24” centers without fasteners in the head track.
Dietrich TradeReady ® Spazzer ® 9200 is a prenotched, 20-gauge, galvanized
steel spacer bar engineered to handle deflection at the head track of
interior nonstructural stud walls. The prenotched slots and gripping power
of the 50-inch bar holds studs into a rigid, accurately laid out gridwork that
has excellent resistance to stud rotation and displacement.
The Spazzer ® 9200 spacer bar saves time and materials by eliminating the
cost of custom head tracks and the time required to fasten and remove
screws or layout stud spacing at the deck. Hanging drywall is also faster
and easier because the Spazzer ® 9200 spacer bar eliminates the bow that
often occurs in tall interior studs.
Traditional, double track
or track-over-track system.
■ Eliminates bridging at the top row of knockouts.
■ Requires custom top track/longer lead times.
Dietrich DoubleTrack system is a two-piece top track
assembly that allows for the deflection of floor beam or
floor decks along interior partitions. A custom-made deep
leg outer track is installed to the underside of the floor
deck. A wall assembly is constructed on the floor then slid
into place. The wall assembly is designed to allow a “gap”
at the top for deflection. The track-over-track assembly,
although still used, is becoming less and less common.
The development of innovative deflection systems like
the SLP-TRK* System (page 32) has significantly improved
and streamlined the assembly process.
galvanized steel. The product is available in four
widths of 3/4", 1-1/2" and 2". For bridging, 1-1/2" and 3/4"
are utilized with the 1-1/2" channel as the predominant size
used in bridging
applications. Standard
lengths are 10', 16' and
20'. Custom lengths are
available on request.
To brace steel studs
laterally, the channel is
inserted through the
punched knockouts of
the framing members at
specified vertical
spacing. An EasyClip
U-Series clip is then
screw attached to both
the U-Channel and the
framing member. The U-
Channel must be
secured with clips to
provide resistance and
proper bracing.
Block (TR/ST) and Strap (BP-Series )
38
Full-depth bracing that restricts
rotation and movement.
■ Used as bridging when framing members
are unpunched.
■ Eliminates the need for clips.
■ Provides alternative bridging when knockouts
do not align.
Blocking is field cut from the same size excess track. Solid
blocking is made by cutting the flanges of the material and
bending the web to form a 4" overlap on the wall member.
Solid blocking is installed in the first and last two bays of
each wall section, with one additional block every 8' of wall.
Continuous strapping, 2" x 20 gauge or heavier as specified,
is then installed on both stud faces, or one face if the
opposite side is fully sheathed.
Block (TR/ST)
Blocking is typically field cut from the same or heavier excess track stock and secured between wall studs. Stud stock is also an option. Studs are
attached using EasyClip U- or S-Series clip angles. Blocking should be installed in the first two bays, the last two bays and every 8 feet.
Interior (Drywall) Framing Products for Various Drywall Framing Assemblies
Economical hat-shaped framing
component used to “furr” out
ceilings and masonry walls.
■ Provides noncombustible furring for interior
and exterior walls.
■ Wide knurled face prevents screw “ride” and
facilitates easy installation.
■ Use to level uneven surfaces.
■ Available in 7/8” and 1-1/2” depths and
25, 20, 18 and 16 gauge.
■ Standard lengths are 10’ and 12’.
Other lengths available.
Dietrich furring channel is a hat-shaped corrosion-resistant framing
component used to furr out masonry walls and ceiling assemblies. In
concrete wall applications, furring channel is installed vertically to the
wall surface using concrete nails or power-driven fasteners. Gypsum
panels are then screw-attached to the furring channels. In ceiling
applications, furring channels can be attached directly to the
underside of the building structure using tie wire, screws or powerdriven
fasteners. Furring
channel is also used in
conjunction with U-Channel,
hanger wire and furring
channel clips to form
a rigid suspended ceiling
framework. Gypsum panels,
veneers or metal lath for
plaster finishes are attached
to the furring. Heavier-gauge
furring enables greater spans
and loading capacity. 18-
or 16-gauge furring is
commonly used for purlins
in exterior applications.
■ Lab-Certified STC-rated up to 54.
■ Single and double leg channels.
■ Knurled face to prevent screw ride.
■ RC Deluxe (RCSD) has extra-wide screw
surface for easy attachment.
■ Available in 12’ lengths.
Dietrich resilient channel is one of the most efficient
low-cost methods developed to reduce transmission of
airborne sound through partition and ceiling assemblies.
The resilient channel dampens sound waves effectively,
dissipating the energy and reducing sound transmission by
suspending gypsum wallboard 1/2" from the stud or joist.
Sound absorption can be maximized by utilizing sound
attenuation blankets within the wall or floor cavity.
Resilient channel is manufactured from 25- and 20-gauge
corrosion-resistant galvanized steel and is available with
single or double legs. The single leg resilient channel is
available in regular (RCUR) and deluxe (RCSD/RCSE) sizes.
Dietrich high-performance single leg resilient channel
(RCUR) has a 1-1/4" screw flange. The RCUR is commonly
used in wall applications. Dietrich RC Deluxe resilient
channel (RCSD/RCSE) is the preferred resilient channel in
many applications because of its extra-wide 1-1/2" screw
flange. The extra-wide flange provides added rigidity and a
wider surface for faster and easier installation of sheathing
materials.
Dietrich double leg resilient channel (RCDN/RCDE) has
two legs for rapid installation. Double leg resilient
installation is typically used for ceiling applications with
multiple layers of gypsum board. Double leg resilient is
easier to install, but offers a lower STC rating.
