Driving comfort I xDrive 42|43RIDE COMFORT IS SUCH A FREQUENTLY USED TERM.IT’S ABOUT TIME WE EXPLAINED WHAT IT MEANS.THE xDRIVE ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE SYSTEM GETS YOU AHEAD.IN ALL CONDITIONS.The BMW Series is a wonderful place to relax, gliding effortlessly over even rough andbumpy roads. It’s all down to the hard work of our engineers and their quest to optimise ridecomfort. One notable development is Dynamic Damper Control. The system’s computerconstantly analyses both speed and acceleration and the movements of the car’s body. Thedata collected is sent to the various control units every . milliseconds. In this way, thedampers can be adjusted with exceptional speed and effectiveness, ensuring an exemplaryride and low road noise at all times. When fi tted in combination with optional Dynamic Drivewith roll compensation, the car displays almost no body movement, for a signifi cantlyDriving Experience Control: whether you’reseeking to make your journey extra-comfortableor the drive a touch sportier, the DrivingExperience Control switch allows you, at anytime, to adjust the characteristics of theBMW Series through four stages (Comfort+,Comfort, Sport and Sport+) to suit. Simplypressing the switch adjusts the settings ofnumerous components, such as DynamicStability Control, the accelerator pedal controlmap and steering power assistance.smoother ride in the rear. If you’re working in the back, that means you can concentrate allthe more effectively. Then there’s the newly developed double-wishbone front suspension. This, in particular, stabilises straight-line driving at high speeds and minimises the disruptiveeffects of poor road conditions. The construction also frees the dampers from unwantedlateral and longitudinal forces, so they can respond even more sensitively to iron out bumpsand ruts in the road. Both the front and rear axles are made entirely from aluminium, whichreduces the unsprung masses and further increases ride comfort.Dynamic Damper Control: this systemautomatically adjusts the car’s dampingcharacteristics to minimise unwantedmovements in the vehicle on uneven roadsurfaces or through corners, for example.A sudden downpour, leaves or snow on the road – situations that normally make drivingchallenging are handled with aplomb by the BMW fi i/Li xDrive and fi d xDrive. Theintelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system combines the bene ts of the lightning-fast responsesof a four-wheel drive with the groundbreaking dynamic ability of the BMW Series. In dif cultweather conditions, or on challenging road surfaces, this further increases the excellent level oftraction and directional stability.xDrive analyses the data collected by the vehicle electronics – such as wheel speeds, steeringangle, yaw rate and engine torque – and seamlessly varies the torque split between the front andrear wheels in line with requirements. Based on its data analysis, the system is able to recognisewhether the vehicle is able to follow the course set by the steering wheel, or whether there is arisk of oversteer or understeer. When xDrive registers that the front wheels are being pushedtowards the outside of the bend, the electronically controlled multi-plate clutch responds withinmilliseconds to channel more power to the rear wheels, thus preventing understeer. You aresimply left to enjoy the superb dynamic performance of the BMW Series.www.bmw.com/xdrivePower split between rear axlefront axlexDrive continuously monitors the datacollected by the vehicle electronics, such as wheel speeds, steering angle, yaw rate and engine torque. Based onits analysis, the system recognises ifan intervention is required and performslightning-fast adjustments of the torquesplit between the front and rear wheelsas required.
