The excessdemand for services is due in part tothe growing number of uninsuredpatients accessing health care throughthe emergency room. The announced renovation of theexisting emergency department intothe new Norman Brinker Emergencyand Trauma Services at MethodistDallas will enlarge the currentemergency facility to increase itscapacity and add an urgent carecenter to redirect noncritical patientsto the appropriate care. saluting first respondersWhen Dallas Police Department SWAT commander Lt. Carlton R. Marshall was shot in theline of duty in October 2007, first responders, including paramedics and doctors on thescene and the trauma and surgical teams at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, helped tosave his life. After life-saving surgery at Methodist Dallas, Lt. Marshall was hospitalizedat Methodist Dallas and later at a rehabilitation hospital for nearly nine months. Despitemultiple complications that left him partially paralyzed and with cochlear implants torestore his hearing, Lt. Marshall returned to work in August 2009 as a commander of theproperty-crimes unit in the Dallas Police Department’s south central division. Methodist isproud that our level II trauma services played an important role in serving Lt. Marshall, aswell as 45 other Dallas police and fire officers in 2008 alone and the over 60,000 emergencypatients we treat annually, in their times of need. We appreciate and support the valiantefforts of all who have dedicated their lives to serving on the front lines of health care.D A L L A S F O U N D A T I O N$500,000 gift forindigent careWorking poor and impoverished families living in the Methodist Health System service area have few choices for accessing qualityhealth care. Our compassionate mission offers a ray of hope to those most in need through a range of medical and outreachservices available at our Golden Cross Clinic, family care centers, and hospitals. In 2008 Methodist provided more than $81 millionin unreimbursed charity care to ensure disadvantaged children, the elderly, and others in great need received vital immunizations, health screenings, treatments, and prescription medications. The Folsom Leadership Award dinner, Methodist Health System’s largestfundraising event, helps to cover some of the costs for these services, but so much more is needed to ensure quality health care forthose who can least afford it. Recognizing this urgent need in the community, an anonymous donor has generously gifted $500,000 forMethodist’s emergency indigent care through The Dallas Foundation. It is heartening to know Methodist has such caring friends. An estimated 30percent of the area’s 211,000 womenof childbearing age are at risk forpreterm delivery.“In our pilot group, which is part ofa three-year March of Dimes study, just two out of about 70 women hadpreterm deliveries, lowering ourrate to around 3 percent,” saidStephen Patrick, MD, programdirector of Obstetrics and Gynecologyat Methodist Dallas Medical Center.“The outcome seems to be holdingtrue across the board in the study.March of Dimes is seeing abouta 3 percent incidence for womenenrolled in its CenteringPregnancy program.”The Life Shines Bright pregnancyprogram, modeled on the March ofDimes Centering Pregnancy program,March of Dimes Dallas Division E xecutive Director Julie Whitsitt together with Dr. Stephen Patrick, anindependently practicing obstetrics and gynecology physician on staf f at the Golden Cross AcademicClinic, star ted the Life Shines Bright pregnancy program to reduce the rates of preterm bir th.uses community outreach educationand screening to identify women atrisk for preterm delivery, which placesinfants at higher risk for long-termphysical disabilities and cognitiveand behavioral disorders. Womenat high risk are then enrolled in amultidisciplinary group care modelthat provides prenatal care referral, group and individual education, ongoing pregnancy monitoring, andmedical treatment to support fulltermdelivery. Another integral partof the program is the Read to Mecomponent, which fosters parentalhealth literacy and emphasizesthe importance of early reading inchildhood development.Continuing support from the Marchof Dimes Foundation with a giftof $125,000, in addition to majorsupport from other foundations, hasprovided the means for MethodistDallas to expand the programbeginning in October 2009. Toaccommodate additional patients andgroup activities, modifications withinthe Golden Cross Academic Clinicinclude increasing the physical spaceand staff dedicated to the Life ShinesBright program. The new groupmeeting space is designed to promotepatient ease and participation in acomfortable homelike setting withaudio/visual teaching capabilities. The three-year program expansioninitiative is a collaboration of theDallas Chapter of the March ofDimes and Healthy Start Dallas. The goal is to screen and educate morethan 1,200 women of childbearingage a year at the Golden Cross Clinic. In addition to increasing the numberof women served through the GoldenCross Academic Clinic, the protocolsand outcomes of the program will bemade available to other facilities inDallas County and beyond.“March of Dimes has chosen tosupport the Life Shines Brightprogram because our Foundation’sgoal is to give every baby a healthystart in life. This was an easy choicegiven that one in seven babies is bornpremature each year, and MethodistDallas serves women who residein areas with the highest pretermbirth rates in Dallas County.
