This machine enables us to produce clean, porosity-free, homogeneous steels throughout a slab thickness range up to 400 mm. The secret: so-called “soft reduction” – the strand shell is compressed during casting in such a way that a material cross-section with absolutely homogeneous properties is achieved through to the center of the slab. For extra thick and heavy plates, we use the traditional ingotcasting method, with ingots of a maximum weight of up to 63 tonnes, and a thickness of up to one meter. 12
